I won it a bunch of times, it is a cool game. I don't know if it is influential but it does have an indie spiritual successor called Empire Something Something. I did not try that.

Simant along with Simtower and Simcity2000 were my jam back when I ruled high school.

The games are better without guides though. Once you know how to beat it the games lose a lot of charm, but just messing around and being an ant, going warrior to mess with the enemy colony or being a flying ant and dying instantly was pretty radical.
