Okay! a normal shmup thread. So recently I picked my saturn back up and found a few games I never knew about before and played a bit of them. Hyper Duel, Thunder Force Gold Pack (How did I miss these?), Cotton 2/Boomerang.

One that really grabbed me though was Metal Black. The game is pretty as hell, and has really interesting mechanics.

Try the PSP port, the Gradius Collection is top notch so it should be good too...but probably not via PPSSPP, it has a lot of input lag

Did I get memed buying Taito Legends 2? Far as I know it's my only option for G-Darius, but there's loading screens

The first one, easiest by far. The final stage is a difficulty spike and will require far more memorization than the rest of the game but hey that's true for the entire original trilogy. X is the best but it's a good bit harder and already assumes you know some basic techniques like how to use nades and slug iframe exploiting.

If you're new you may be confused. This is what's going on:
"Jarpigs" are those who inhabit the shmup space but don't or seldom play shmups, instead they typically play RPGs. These people tend to be extremely whiny and only come to pretend to be into something to make them feel part of a niche group. They're an issue because they do stuff like complaining about basic stuff in shmups, barging in when they know nothing about the subject matter, spreading wrong information unknowingly just to be a part of the conversation. As you can see they're pure noise.
Some of us are really tired of them and just want a space for players. They get really upset if you tell them to play shmups, post scores, etc. Unfortunately the biggest shmup spaces have some players that for various reasons (clout, company as they lack friends IRL and they'll take anything that has any remote interest in shmups, etc.) so it's a bit of a struggle to create such a space.
Just look at how they get mad ITT just because of being exposed for this and for some wanting a space without them. They already have spaces for them and they still feel the need to bitch here.

This is basic. Imagine you have a chess club and it gets filled with people that enter to drink and make noise and aren't interested in chess. Of course you're justified in wanting to kick them out and desiring a space for legitimate chess fans. But the owner of the club happens to let the people in because "otherwise the scene would be small and dead, we need more people". Hope this analogy makes it easy to understand.

Touhou is partly to blame (as the series has attracted the biggest number of secondaries) but the real issue is just the nature of the hobby. It's a very small scene and not many seem to enjoy playing shmups due to the difficulty and other factors that make them prefer other video games, but it gives people this "special club" feeling by belonging to something so seemingly obscure.
This also happens in similar scenes like fighting games, but to a lesser extent relative to players since they're bigger.
Also, some lonely players fear not having anyone to talk with so they have no filter for quality. And some want to use these jarpigs to become an eceleb in a scene with very limited competition.
To illustrate the poser issue in shmups, Touhou is the only video game series in existence where fangames that aren't of the genre of the main series are more popularly played that said main series. Meanwhile, pretty much everyone into say Final Fantasy has played at least a game in the series to completion.
