The Sufami Turbo is a bizarre little thing, not unlike the Aladdin Deck Enhancer for the NES, except it was designed by Bandai and endorsed by Nintendo. It allows one to plug in custom cartridges which could interface with each other (thanks to having two cartridge ports).

Bandai used it for a bunch of Ultraman and Gundam games it looks like, I'm mostly going by Wikipedia.

Also, I think they bypassed the region 'sizing'. rather than make a chip-based region ala NES/SNES, Sega just made the carts a different shape. EA bypassed that, and you can still find some imports here in the US that have been 'Shaved' to fit.

Micro Machines 2 was amazing. The one on the playstation was great too.

Whoever decided that the game cart needed 2 controller slots deserves a knighthood for services to gaming. Thye make a great multiplayer game then they make sure you have the ability to play it properly.

Am I remembering correctly - was there even a mode for 8 players where you shared half a pad and only had contoll of steering?

Does the micromachines toy brand even exist anymore? I'd love a modern MM.

It had the IR port because the DMG doesn't have one, and they didn't want to leave anyone out. Dude, I had Nintendo consoles exclusively through the N64, after which I switched to PC and Xbox. The only Sega games I've played are the Total War series and 10Six.

Just read a bit about the history of Nintendo and Sega. In the NES Nintendo had a stranglehold on the North American market that allowed them to enact extremely restrictive licensing terms. On the flip side, part of the reason they were able to dominate the market was due to those same terms. Their strict quality control restored customer faith in game consoles after the mid-80's game crash. Once their position was secure, though, they were still restricting third parties to five NES games a year and prohibiting releases on competing systems.

They were basically able to keep this up until the uncensored Genesis port of Mortal Kombat proved far more successful than the sanitized SNES version.

EA sat the 8-bit console era out and focused on PC games because of Nintendo's bullshit licensing agreements

At the start of the 16-bit era EA sees that Sega has a chance this time around. EA approaches Sega but Sega says "look, Nintendo apparently did right with their licensing practises, so we are going to use a similar agreement. EA is like "you people are stupid! Nintendo is going to bury you AGAIN."
Nintendo says "If you want a better deal from us then I guess you're just gonna hafta reverse engineer the Genesis ain't ya? HAHAHA"
So EA did.
EA goes back to Sega and says "Look, we did it and we're gonna flood the market with unlicensed games unless you play ball>" Sega backs down and part of the deal was that EA could manufacture their own carts.

Actually, it was a way for Bandai to cut back on production costs. The big cartridge consisted of the memory mapper and the lockout chip, among other necessary chips that can be similar between games, while the smaller carts contained the CHR and PRG data. Essentially, cutting costs to produce one set of chips "permanently" while producing fewer various chips.

The NES Deck Enhancer worked in a similar way, except unlike the SuFami Turbo, it wasn't given the OK by Nintendo.

Remember when Nintendo home consoles were the "main" console?

>> No.675323

>>674962
The NES had no competition, licensing agreements or not. How many games can a given team make in a single year, anyway? I doubt Konami or Capcom could squeeze out more than 5 NES games per year. That was to keep "shovelware" publishers such as GameTek or Bandai in check, as they never developed games in-house, and could easily hire a bunch of teams to make a bunch of games at the same time.

And some NES titles were on competing systems, just not the Master System. I think they just restricted the programmers to work on the NES, which actually benefits the programmer for once. No need to learn five different assembly languages and consoles.

And the Mortal Kombat Genesis game was used by Howards against Sega, and the Supreme Court stated that "Sega games were unfit for the American youth". NoA was ran by a legal expert, and until 2000-ish, they were feared and respected by everyone. Nintendo tried their very best to make their failures of consoles into "the main console", until Iwata took over and decided to make them secondary Marioboxes.
