Hello you wonderful anons of /vr/. Our first TWO romhack suggestion/discussion threads were such a success that I'm starting up a second one. On the last episode of Romhack Central, our heroes were:
>>589213

This is basically a romhack general thread. The emphasis is on romhack suggestions and tutorials (i.e. where/how to acquire them). As suggested last thread, it's also a thread for romhack reviews! If you have played some good romhacks (or bad) we'd not only like you to suggest them and give pertinent sourcing info, but please tell us about the game. Was it good, was it bad, what did/didn't you like about it, graphics, ease of use, sound, etc etc etc.

All romhack suggestions, discussions, troubleshooting/help, reviews: all here please, kindly, and thank you. Please try and be civil: all experience levels of this subject matter are welcome, from the new anon who knows nothing about what romhacks are to the 10+year veteran romhack creators themselves. Please, I ask, be kind to one another and help each other. Thanks to everyone that has contributed t make the last two threads so great, and an advanced thanks to all the anons who will post here and continue this awesome thread! Sincerely, thank you!!

Also, a bit of useful information, Metroid Redesign and Super Zero Mission both have portions of Norfair you have to rush through without the Varia suit. The "Hell's run" in Redesign also requires you to have found at least three Energy Tanks first, or it is impossible. You can't reach the first monster spawner without it.

I disagree entirely, I beat it with 97% items with basically no spoilers or map help. and regarding a popular one, Mega Man X , wouldn't it be nice if fanboys would try to gather around a project and do what they think capcom fails to do: a massive reboot of the series , making a massive game that recaps the 11 games but with a tight coherent script , best abilities and moves picked here and there, best bosses etc . to recap 11 games seems like it would make an immense game but there is a lot of fluff and useless stuff in there, it could be possible to make a lean mean edit of it all.

Hello /vr/, long time no see.
This might be my biggest contribution here ever, so show me some love.

I just invested a couple of hours to include every single hack listed here http://rockman2ips.tripod.com/index_en.html to my own Mega Man hack collection. Took a couple of hours, and the collection now is huge.
I kept some of the games I had from before, but deleted a couple that were only ugly graphic edits, so what you have now is 100+ perfectly playable (however ugly some might be) Mega Man romhacks. All tested in Netopia (up to the title screen, of course I haven't played them all yet )

They're sorted in folders by the original rom I applied the patch to (there were a couple of games for the american rom that turned out to be in japanese. Weird) ... so, sorry for the people using the tidy name convention of the Mega folder, I didn't keep track of author's names, release dates, versions, etc. I just sorted this out in a way that's comfortable for me to actually play, not just archiving (and since I put these roms everywhere, including old console emulators, I can't have huge filenames)

Whatever weirdness you find, like, different versions of a single game that don't specify exactly what the difference is... well, it most likely was something I couldn't figure out from the japanese zip files. Maybe we can't work on that together?

Here it is, enjoy!

* MEGA MAN EDITORS

Editors for each NES game! From "rock5easily", the guy/guys/being that brought you Rockman 3/4/5 Endless!

* ROCK5EASILY BLOG (URL??)

I can't find it anymore, but rock5easly's blog had a HUGE list of simple but interesting patchs for little things like, replacing Shadow Blade for Metal Blade in Mega Man 3, or allowing directional shoting with the buster in Mega Man 2, or replacing the buster with some sort of Wave Beam from Metroid. Aw, sweet. I've always wanted to participate in one of these threads. Here are a few of the romhacks I've played so far.

>Super Mario RPG: Revolution

Fantastic romhack of Mario RPG, as it brings difficulty, new enemies, new items, new weapons, and even new boss strategies. It's mind-blowing how they turned this game upside down and made it a new experience. "A" quality work. My one downside is that it's a little too hard in some areas, including a certain bonus boss that's glitched to be unbeatable no matter how high your level is.

>Super Metroid: Redesign

I loved the original Metroid, but this romhack was ass. Game was too difficult, to the point where you had to use glitches, savestates, tool assistance, and in general you had to scan every single piece of the overworld to find hidden blocks. The backtracking was atrocious, the rooms repeated too much, the level design was sloppy, and really, I didn't find much joy in it other than the kickass escape sequence which did take me for a surprise.

You mean YOU needed that stuff. That scanning claim is especially silly. I loved it. The problem is lower skilled players lack the skill to gauge their own skill and play what fits them and thus push their blame outward more. It happens all the time. I don't blame you though, if the game is too hard for you that's a fair assessment.

I wouldn't call it sloppy. If anything, it's the opposite. It's just very frustrating because navigation is difficult and the game requires frenzied sweeps across every block to figure out where to go next. I wonder if it's possible to ASM hack GSC to be a little more "modern" by doing some minor tweaks. It's not so much a limit of the system's capabilities rather than the programmer's own abilities. From RBY to GSC, it's a giant leap of difference, only because Warawara worked on GSC. GameFreak are terrible programmers.

Shame no one has disassembled those games quite well, as the most people will ever do with them is make "joke" demakes of newer Pokemon games that never see the light of day and were made "for fun". Editing hexadecimals for months at a time apparently is "fun".

Also, how the hell were these older games programmed in fucking binary? How the hell were some even older games programmed with discrete logic chips?

Super Mario RPG uses a Super FX chip in the actual cart, and SNES emulators on PSP just can't fucking handle it. See Starfox and (some scenes in) Chrono Trigger too, it just lags to shit.

The PSP emulation scene (barring the official Sony PS1 emu) is largely based around speedhacks, so games won't be highly accurate (not really a problem for most folks) or they'll run like shit. It also means that romhacks can be hit or miss. Some will work, some won't, especially SNES rom hacks, which have a bad history of only being compatible with the most popular emulator that was out at the time of creating the hack.

ASM is more like for adding entirely new enemies and shit with special programming.

I imagine you're talking about doing stuff like changing damage values, EXP, etc., and that falls within the realm of hex editing.

I remember exactly that being said in another thread, as far as I can tell, it was probably being made as some sort of 2ch-only patch but then started to become too popular so the author decided to do a remake version.

Project Zeality released their full Prophet's Guile hack some time ago, a side project that they started having been working on Crimson Echoes for some time and acquiring skills.

Crimson Echoes proper took 9 years of development to make. 35 hours of gameplay, tons of new sidequests, high difficulty level, and new music.

The month that the ROM was to be released to die-hard Square-Enix fans, SE sent a cease and desist threatening to destroy every member of the team should they release it. They bowed before the might of Square, who hates Chrono Trigger fans so much that they stopped a 9 year high quality ROM hack sequel.

Until 2011, when Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to the internet. Here.

Legend of Dragoon is a fucking nightmare to hack. I know someone who hacked it to hypercharge the game's difficulty and they said that they would never ever do anything with that game again because of how fucked up it was programming-wise. Sadly they lost said hack during a hard drive disaster.

I approached them for advice about revising the game's script (let's face it, the English translation is just as bad as FF7's) but even the way the game stores text is absurd. Something about each word occupying its own slot that cannot be exceeded in character limit. So, something like [Dart!] [Let's] [go!] means that the first block can only be 5 characters or less, same for the second, and the third can be 3 or less.

tl;dr nightmares

>> No.706501

As a Japanese to English translator that is a motherfucking NIGHTMARE. I can't even imagine trying to translate something with such a strange restriction imposed. It's not so bad being restricted in terms of length because you can always reword, but now each word in each place can only be so long? No wonder the game had such an errorneous translation, one can only do so much with that terrifying cockblock stopping you every step of the way

>> No.706506

No, I doubt that they had such a restriction while translating the game and programming the English version. It's likely that such a restrction was put in later for some reason when the script was finalized, or it's just a weird side-effect.

Without access to the source code and development tools, of course it's going to be a pain in the ass.

To follow up, LoD used a lot of kanji in its script (being a JRPG on the PS1 and all that), so that means that there is going to be drastic differences in length when you compare the Japanese script to the English script. For example:

Japanese: 緑牙竜フェルブランド
English: Green-tusked Dragon Feyrbrand

The reason why the game's script sucks is they either had shitty translators or shitty editors, or both. Translating the literal "Northern Area of Serdio" as "North of Serdio" is just fucking sloppy. "North Serdio" or "Northern Serdio" was needed given the context.

Sadly, it was lost ages ago, along with the documentation. They said if they still had it, they would remake it. Basically it overhauled every single enemy and, "it changes: all items found, all equipment found, all monster drops, all monster stats"

Regarding the game's text: "its not so much how it is stored but rather that it's a massive pain. iirc, the text is stored backwards. i.e. "We must Hurry", "yrruH tsum eW" in the file"
and
"basically if a sentence has 20 letters you can't change the total amount of letters unless you free up space somewhere else but then you have to adjust the pointer"

So yeah.

I'm the one who made the LoD hardmode hack. Lost the documentation, the iso and the patched files all ( together with my Grandia 1 hardmode hack ) when an external HDD decided it's midlife crisis would be trying to be charcoal.

I roughly remember it taking the better deal of a year to figure out the documentation and then adjusting everything and playtesting it. If I still had the documentation, a good six or seven months would be cut from that timeframe and I'd remake it since it's such a nice game. But I really lack the drive to figure it all out from scratch. Especially considering FF7 documentation is more accessible and there is a PC version for which I made a super hardmode hack, too.

it's been so long that there are only fragments of what I did to it left in memory. I know text is stored backwards, that items come before equip and that item effects are in a different file while equip stats are actually in the same file.
the combo attacks had their own file and were ordered backwards, I remember that there were unused combo data for the bow users, dragon spells had their own file.. stuff like that, but I have no idea on what file did what anymore.
character base stats were in one file and I believe also the equip limitations, which made it a giant mess of samey looking numbers.

monsters had their own file entirely separate from the file that labeled each monster attack and name.

thats really about as much as I remember.

as far as sequential design goes, yes. but i'd say the most important characteristics of metroid games is making you lost as shit the first time you play it. the other anon's point was that it's pretty fucking cool game design to give you the power bombs and then allow you limited access to maridia before you get the gravity suit. you CAN explore what's there, if you're able or patient enough, but it's truly satisfying once you dive through it with the gravity suit and finally come across the broken pipe from earlier.

the "oh, THIS is where that path goes!" thought process is what defines a metroid, imo

Dear /vr/

Convince me to finish my MM5 romhack.

Here is how it is : I've always considered MM5 the weakest of the NES series, BUT with a lot un-used potential. For example check Gravity Man's stage and think of what could be done with it!
So the aim of my hack has been to recreate levels in a classic Megaman style (with quite a lot of inspiration from 9 and 10 actually) while being slightly more challenging than the original (which was a cake walk) and while using what I consider to be the un-used potential of the original. No new graphics or enemies.

I've made about 10 stages so that's the two third of stages done so far but I lost motivation. The main problem is that, the more I kept working on it, the more I kept thinking how awesome it would be if I could make my own musics with the sound assets of the original and if the bosses could be improved to be made more difficult (as well as other small changes).
For music I guess I could do it (I'm a musician) but it would take forever, maybe even longer than the levels themselves.
For changing bosses AI I'd have no idea to where even start. Does anybody here have any experience in that?

Or I could make it a "level hack" only but I'm afraid those are too easily overshadowed by more "complete" hacks...

Why don't you post what you have done so far so we can give you some feedback? I'd be glad to. Besides the fact that I'm always looking for new hacks to try, I always felt the same as you about Mega Man 5, so I'd really like to play it.

I say, first release a version as a level hack (which I bet will be more than enough as it is)... get some praise, some feedback, some motivation, some fresh ideas... and then start trying the other things you mention. Just don't wait until it's "100%" perfect to release it and receive feedback because perfect never comes, that's what kills most fangames/hacks!

As a tip for the things you want to do but don't know how to yet, you should ask in some of the Mega Man websited that hold a forum with a romhack section (like rockmanpm.com's forum), or this particular romhack forum here: http://acmlm.kafuka.org/board/forum.php?id=19 ... those are places that the well-known Mega Man hackers often visit, and give advices to one another (I've seen Mega Man Ultra's infidelity discussing technical stuff with Mega Man Odyssey's kujakiller... maybe you should make a couple of threads about your project on those forums and specifically ask for some help or advices)

if you're still there, the technique you use for that is easier than bomb jumping:

1. spring ball jump, lay bomb at apex of jump
2. jump back up and hit the single bomb, gives you the height needed to get up.

i played/beat redesign and it was hard but not too hard. i think he did a great job expanding super metroid.

you need skills like infinite bomb jumps and mockball to get 100% , but not required for completion of the main game.
