I think what went right was that Hudson had a lot of tries beforehand to discard all of fluff and lame design of the earlier Soldier entries so by the time of post Soldier Blade, they had figured out an optimal design for a console shootemup.

Goes above most shooters on the engine (added ram obviously) in having multiple ships, multiple weapons, rudimentary scoring system and so on on top of a solid package.

yes, the soundtrack is great, but the gameplay is far better. the visuals looks pretty good too, i highly reccomend it. also play spriggan if you want another fast paced, skill based pc engine shooter along the lines of ginga fukei densetsu saphire (GFDS) and LoT.
