6721159 No.6721159 [Reply] [Original]

Megaman/Megaman X are both bold, storied action franchises, but does the IP itself ever fall beyond those lines? What other forays, what different genres has Megaman taken over the years. Many are aware of the classic "Megaman Soccer" game for the super system, but did you know that Megaman released an ARPG for the N64, puzzle games, and even a JRPG for the gamecube? Share any weird or cool megaman facts you have ITT, and don't forget to discuss all of those great retro games.

Shareware was a huge grey area for bootleggers. The whole point was to distribute it far and wide for free, because downloading demos wasn't a thing. This was back when PSM came with demo CDs because how else will you play their game?

The disk in question was a deep reflective cobalt blue with bright yellow block lettering that I remember started with "TOTALLY UNAUTHORIZED". It contained a bunch of shareware demos, but also cheat codes, walkthroughs, guides, etc for a variety of PC games. It was purchased at an Office Depot in the mid-late 90s.

There was an official port of X1 to the PC. The music was weeeeeird because it had to play via MIDI. Back then, game demos were distributed under a "shareware" license: made to be passed around freely any way any one could, because very few people had internet. So you were actually encouraged to make copies and give them to your friends. Some companies would gather up lots of these free demos onto a single piece of physical media and then sell that as a sort of content aggregation service. Totally legal.

Battle & Chase is awesome and overlooked.

Very fun battle racer where the Mega Man formula translates into acquiring vehicule parts from your adversaries and mix and match them to build the best car for each situation.

The game is unbalanced however, it is best to play as Quick Man for his boost system, and once you get the secret parts nothing else will matter.

Also, the English version has cut content so I recommend playing the original ps1 jap version instead; here are screenshots for all the cart parts with their names translated to help you in that task:

>once you get the secret parts nothing else will matter.

This being said you get them pretty late, iirc on the game's 4th or 5th loop. Every time you beat a story mode loop the game becomes a bit harder, and you need to beat it 4 times for 100% completion.
I recommend getting Wily's engine when you beat him the first time.

Yeah, but that was only one crossover episode. Vile and Spark Mandrill show up through a time portal to get some energy source that's become incredibly rare in their time, so X follows them. And X was huge and swole and took no prisoners. The depiction of his X Buster was on point though. Mega Man was like "holy fuck calm down bro". He was exploding buildings with single uncharged shots.

The inconsistencies are pretty hilarious the more you know about the lore. X claims that he's been programmed to exterminate Mavericks with extreme prejudice and at any cost. Vile identifies himself as a "Repliroid". X's appearance overall is like if you stuck a young Arnold Schwarzenegger in a blue suit and gave him an arm cannon.

One thing they do nail is just how hopelessly outmatched Robot Masters are against Reploids.

Which Mega Man genre spinoffs are good? As in non-platformer MM. I'd say the arcade games are fun, though (amusingly) easier than the console games for some reason. They were capable of self-motivation and autonomous action. They even were capable of feelings. All they lacked was self-growth. After Wily fucked the world a dozen times, advanced robotics were banned. Dr. Cain found X in a time when robots were a deep taboo, and studied him for years and years before letting him see the light of day. The novelization actually goes into detail on this: X DOES NOT KNOW he's the first. By the time he was allowed out of Cain's lab, Reploids were already common, and he had no reason to think he was special or unique: just another model. The existence of Dr. Light's lab is so highly classified that Alia field-executed Ground Scaravich just for walking into it unpermitted, no questions asked.

Cain actually needed the research windfall of X just to make the public argument that autonomous robots are in fact viable and not dangerous. Spoiler alert: They are. Their sheer efficacy won the public and governments over long enough to let it all go wrong again.

I was pissed when 9 was a huge step backwards, and not even as impressive as romhacks. I really wanted it to go all out before the big reveal. 8 may not have been perfect, but it was definitely ambitious and the upgrade system was cool. 11 is the closest thing to what I sorta wanted, but still not as elaborate. I still think the Mega Arm and Uppercut should be (optional) parts of Rock's moveset. Or at least his fucking soccer kick.
It's also a shame that they took away the ability to use the normal Mega Buster while using any weapon. I really like it when Megaman gets technical, and taking all that away because casuals can't handle it sucks.
