Important!

The latest versions of several popular NES emulators do not support edited versions of certain Konami games, including Ganbare Goemon Gaiden 2. The title screen will display incorrectly, and the game will most likely crash shortly thereafter, rendering it unplayable.

I can't fix that by editing the ROM, as the cause of the issue is within the source code for those emulators. However, there are still many available methods of playing the patched game with no issues, including:

Windows

FCEUX (2.1.4a and below)
Nestopia (1.37 and below)
FCEU-mm ("final" v0.98.13mm) (This is a fork of FCEU from before FCEUX incorporated the change)

Mednafen with MedGui v1.99999 (This is based on an older version of FCEUX, so future updates might break compatibility)

Mesen (v0.9.5)

Nintendulator ("unstable" v0.9.7.5)

VirtuaNES (v0.97)

Android

"Free NES Emulator" by Deimos Applications (v2.15)

RetroPie

lr-fceumm

NES Mini

The kind of reviews there:
http://www.romhacking.net/reviews/5519/#review

>A much needed de-weebification.
One of the single biggest gripes with a large amount of the fan-translation rom hacks out there (as well as fan-translations of much Japanese media in general), is the bizarre obsession many amateur translators have with randomly leaving titles, random nouns, and other general words with lazily romanized spellings of what are still essentially untranslated Japanese words strewn about.

(tl;dr crap) (...)

In short, this revision and others like it are a god-send and so many more are strongly needed, particularly in this community. I highly approve of this revision, and feel like we could very much do with many more like it, to improve a great deal of the frankly, unfinished fan-translations that already exist.

This is a great hack/revision that does exactly what it sets out to do, succeeds in making the translation itself more complete and much less embarrassing, and is not only very nice and professional and complete, but we could always use more for other pre-existing hacks and games. Great job, highly recommended and greatly appreciated.

Please continue to make this type of translation quality and consistency into a more common standard across more fan-translated works, both in the future and retroactively.

/end quote

Not all reviews are "high quality" enough to pass RHDN's moderation.

Omitsu IS a thot.
She was more aroused by that redhead villain in GG3 than she ever was by Goemon, and the closest sexual tension she had with Goemon was a fever dream in GG4. Very few times she was actually helpful, and that's in the DS game (helping them out of the prison, and Yae is the one who still did most of the work)

If he got over it, that's perfect.
He's better off with Yuki or Yae.
Omitsu is just an immature crush.
Sadly Shin Sedai isn't canon in that aspect (alone, it would've redeemed its existence)

Drama explained: The non-political translator, Tom/RetroTranslator (who only translates video games and no other media), innocently translated an ingame dialogue gag that (in JAPANESE) mocks/has fun with the concept of transvestites, and various leftwingers like many Reseterans and the main guy from HG101, Kurt Kalata, scared him off the Internet for almost permanently until one of his friends and fellow hackers/translators calmed him down and encouraged him to not get blues from the leftist outrage mob.

GG3 has a character mention they are "new-half", which is a somewhat derogatory slang for a transvestite/transexual. The translator used the term "tranny", which is an English somewhat derogatory slang for a transvestite/transexual. Trannies on twitter got mad because he was faithful to the original, and demanded censorship to spare their feelings. Romhacking.net and some other similar such TCRF joined HG101 and the resetera newhalves in the dogpiling (Kalata's own term for what he was doing), and the translator got insulted and quit (but remember, he's now back and finished the final 3 SNES games!!!!).

>These cases were replaced either by "punching up" jokes (ie: making fun of homophobes instead of making fun of gay people), by correcting the toxic assumptions (ie: replacing a joke about taxes being too high with a joke about a politician's golf trips), or simply with new writing.
> In every case the quality of the spoof increased. This process really opened my eyes to how easy it is to actually avoid this kind of "humor". There are a million ways to be funny without harming people in real life. Those who write this kind of humor (and those who fight to preserve it by crying "censorship" at attempts to change it) are not defending "free speech" or "artistic expression" - they are attempting to prop themselves up by putting others down. The world is already a terrible place. The least we can do as writers is not make it worse.

They removed a game that was faithful to the original, to the point of keeping a now offensive word(which was not some years ago) in the game. They complained that the translator should censor the game so to avoid offend anyone.

I don't have a big problem with RHDN, and don't give a shit whether the games says tranny or not, but it's pretty clear to me they fucked up. We now have these very important translations out there, all while the hottest entry on the "Translations" section of RHDN this week is an indonesian translation of Mega Man Zero. It's true RHDN hadn't fucked up this bad before, but this was enough to damage their intended "the one place for all romhacks" position.

They didn't even force the situation, they just asked DDS to make Tom's own V3 alternate patch the only one available on RHDN to avoid getting "dogpilled" themselves, and DDS was like "oh FINE, whatever I'm sick of this shit". They meant it as a simple request, in good faith, just to prevent the torch and pitchfork crowd to come to the site... But intentions aside, by trying to play nice and safe they ultimately hurt themselves, as now other great romhackers will stop putting their content on the site because of this.

A Warner like "this translation reflects humors of a different era" disclaimer would have been more than enough.

>> No.6739562 [DELETED]

>>6739543
Well that's a bit of a pickle for them isn't it.
The problem with whatever groups not wanting to put their new translations/hacks on RHDN is that it'll be much harder to find for the average user that doesn't follow translator groups on Twitter or wherever. Like with this thread probably being the way a lot of people even learned that the Goemon SNES games all got translated just because the Twitter posts were linked.

Even by retarded Wrecking Designs mutts standards,
you can't really make Goemon out of all things "less Japanese".
It's fundamental to its identity, even if you cut the town and story sections entirely there's still enough to trigger them in the gameplay sprites. ResetEra and HG101 think they're the voldemort or eye of sauron of the internet of all things vidya. They had other run ins with RHDN and are a major part why it sucks as much.

IIRC that's why the former top two contributors on RHDN are now banned/gone (Zynk, and MrRichard99.. their current top contributor now is the spanish babelfish romhack spammer lmao) and why some groups were chased away (Dynamic Designs... outright hostility to them in discussions, and resetera-sympathetic mods were part of it)
The best part is that their friends within romhacker circles (who'd post ultimatums they'll quit RHDN forever if anyone who resetera wants banned isn't, right that instant) still deserted the place to irc or discord or tumblr anyways, in part to reconnect with people who ran away from that place.

It does seem to make sense to translate the word "ganbare" if you're translating everything else... but I still prefer it untranslated. It's in the title alongside the weird (to an American) name "Goemon" after all, and "go for it" is kinda lame, even if that's actually what "ganbare" means in that context (I wouldn't know). A title can have weird words in it. If you're gonna say "Go for it" then why not also change "Goemon" to "Gregory" or something? A one-word idiom appearing outside the game's dialogue and narration can be left as it is.

If a character in the game actually said "ganbare" at some point then it would make more sense to translate THAT. Although it'd still be okay not to I think. It's not like people are gonna be playing Goemon games to begin with if they can't tolerate miscellaneous bits of Asian culture.

Going by my limited knowledge of Japanese , Go for it! Goemon seems the be the best fit.

As I understand it "Ganbare" basically means general "encouragement". I suppose the best literal fit would be "Do your best! Goemon" but it's hardly the catchiest title.

I mean, it's a translation and most people are not going to know what "Ganbare" means anyway.

Agree. The "Go for it!" part sound a bit weird translated. It's a very japanese thing than when translated feels a bit awkward. Probably Ganbare would be better, but still doesn't feel quite right.

This, though I personally stick with "Ganbare Goemon" despite what the title screen says, for organization and iconicness. I would rather they translate words meant to be convey an expression than not, however, so I'm relatively glad they translated rather than transliterated Ganbare and Soreyuke.

No such thing in this series, except MSX/NES/Arcade conversions that started it all, and Oedo no Daikaiten/Dynamites blatantly ripping off some setpieces and ideas from Goemon 2 SFC, and Shin Sedai's GBA "port".

There's a GBA port of 1+2 SFC but its only worth is the ability to switch characters without a reset (could be done with a romhack) and as something to feed the Slot-2 for the DS game to have its full NPC cameo range.

>> No.6749224 [DELETED]

More like the moderation team being resetera plants who will unperson anyone resetera disapproves of (they'd have the gall to ask for receipts and demand to see drafts of ban announcements before anyone else to suggest wording changes that puts the most blame on the target and never emphasizes their role, hence how they actually asked Tom to REDO his apology to make them seem less villanous and him, less sympathetic), even if it's a mega feminist romhack spammer who doubles as a top contributor, like Zynk Oxyde.
DDS' problems begun when he put "resetera is cancer" in his twitter bio. The tranny shit is just window dressing. Goemon 2 has no such content but was still in the moderation's crosshairs, because the author is DDS.

Very obviously, the mere mention of Tom, DDS, or the Goemon series triggers the mods there to no ends, to the point of deleting threads discussing bugfixes, other games in the series, or the occasional chatroom moderator meltdown.

HG101 "missed" a tranny that appears in the very beginning of the game and only noticed an obscure NPC somewhere really out of his way. It's obvious to anyone with two brain cells this wasn't organic, "woe is me, i was playing this game and suddenly the translator assaulted me". The conclusion is foregone and that was parallel construction to exact social excommunication on the sinner who dissed their horrible resetera forum. Goemon 4 has even more bait material. "Barely legal wife", only one of the four character quests is inoffensive (the newspaper delivery), the enemy design...

Kudos on the translation team sparing themselves the trouble of dealing with salty hobby intruders ordering them around (who admit to never actually romhacking anything, just in for the power trip, and surprise they have resetera ties)
Someone should try and submit this to zophar, nevertheless.

Nah, the graphics are far more colorful and the animations are better. The combat feels less engaging and there just feels like there's less to do. There are the Impact battles and the openworld map system, but it still feels very streamlined, in comparison, for some reason.

Just finished the second game. I liked it more than the first overall even if there's some parts I'm not fond of (DIdn't like aiming Impact punches with a DPad).

Anyone know how long the third is, give or take? I know it's more Zelda-like vs 1 and 2, so I'm wondering if it's another afternoon beatable game like 1 & 2 or if it's something I should hold off on a bit for next weekend.

The third game is long enough, but one can REALLY tell it was rushed towards the end, to the point there's dialogue seemingly poking fun at the lack of a proper final stage. It is also more slow-paced than the previous two.

Just beat 2 and barely started 3. Apparently, it references the of 2, but pretty vaguely and unimportantly. If you faster-paced sidescrolling than 1, less town interaction overall than 1, and harder Impact battles, you'll like 2. If you only like the Zelda style action-RPG gameplay of 3 and dislike sidescrollers (especially ones that are more barebones than the richness of GGA), you might not like it.

Same with this feed, it's just news so it's not going to be complete:

DDS' Twitter said "Resetera is cancer" and his very non-political buddy Tom ( aka "RetroTranslator") who translates games and nothing else, helped him translate Goemon SNES 2-3. Tom translated dialogue of a joke that features the Japanese dysphemistic slur "new half" appropriately as "tranny" in Goe 3, and then faggot Kurt Kalata from Hardcore Gaming 101 and his tranny friends at Resetera raged about it and tried to shame Tom into changing his finished and accurate translation to fit their personal leftist ideologies and then ordered him to apologize to everyone. Romhacking and TCRF joined in on the dogpile (Kalata's word), too. After Tom apologized, they said it wasn't good enough and asked him to change his apology until they were pleased. This caused Tom to freak out and panic, not being used to internet drama or political rage, so he vowed to quit translating forever. Romhacking refused to host Tom's Goe 3 translation (iirc) and they and Resetera planned on modifying Tom's translation of it to exchange '"tranny" with a leftist politically-correct term that ruined the whole point of this being joke dialogue. Thankfully, DDS eventually got Tom calmed down a few months lster, and they finished Goe 3-4 and Soreyuke Ebisumaru, as you can see today.

I insist, all they had to do is to put a big fat Warner style disclaimer/warning saying "this represents humor from another era", "we left everything intact was a conscious creative choice" or something. It's the right way to go about any situation like this, simply rewriting any occurance of trans jokes (and gay jokes, race jokes, etc.) out of existance is as bad as pretending it doesn't exist.

This >>6764273. It's just a thing he does.

I've lurked on Twitter quite a bit around the issue since the release, I haven't really seen anyone bothering DDS/Tom (yet)
About the submissions on RHDN, I think it's simply a matter of people innocently submitting it, other people against DDS/Tom reporting it, and other people against the site hosting work of an author they disrespected. Don't see DDS/Tom worrying about it at all.

I'm more curious about what's going on on this thread, all the messages getting deleted. Curiously, they're not the posts you'd expect to get deleted (the ones heavy on trans hating, for example), but the ones that touch on RHDN's moderation. Which one of you fuckers is both a mod in RHDN and on 4chan? Get a fucking life.

I can't rank games of different styles equally. I'd go like...

Action Platformer (mainly)
GGA > SFC 4 > SFC 2 > SFC 1 >>> Shin Sedai Shuumei (PS1) > Oedo Daikaiten > Hoshizorashi Dynamites Arawaru
Haven't bothered to try Shin Sedai Shuumei (GBA) as it looks as a very dumbed down port, not sure if it even has unique stages.

Action RPG
MSNG64 > SFC 3 >>>>>>>> Kuru Nara Koi.
Haven't played the DS one.

Arcade
FC 2 > FC 1 > Mr. Goemon

RPG (Turn based battles)
Haven't played any of them. Beside Gaiden 1 and 2, you'd have to count that weird GBC one based on the TV show

Haven't played any other GB/GBC game besides Dynamites.

Action RPG

I haven't played it to completion because I hate playing following guides (really hoping for a translation on this one), but I feel I might end up liking it as much as SFC 3
No I didn't play Kuru Nara Koi to completion either, but it wasn't just the language what stopped me.

Patch 2.0 for Ebisumaru was posted due to a bug.

>> No.6766290 [DELETED]

>>6764401
You got the sequence of events wrong.

I don't think there's bad blood between DDS and Pennywise.
The latter was quite vocal in disapproving the moderation's actions.
The difference is that he tried to work within the system. Examples:

- When Tom was attacked over Goemon 3's "slur":
Pennywise (alongside Gemini) was among the many romhackers who went to chat to tell the moderation "look at this 'problematic content' in my romhack on your site, are you gonna ban me too?" It was so relentless one of their mods had a meltdown with all caps.
- When MrRichard was unpersoned:
Pennywise threatened to quit the website if "deplatforming" was the new normal.

Now this incident is that a separate member other than Pennywise submitted the v1 romhacks of Goemon 1, Goemon 4, and Soreyuke Ebisumaru to RHDN. He made a point of noticing it.

The Goemon 4 patch was purged later. As were 2 forum threads.
The submission history for that patch was also erased (although it was caught by their twitter bot, and yes, it was approved THEN a mod flagged it explicitly as "non compliant")
Pennywise and Chronosplit, with their clout, opened a thread asking about the whereabouts of Goemon 4, and asked the moderation on discord and in private about it. Exactly: "why is this non-compliant?"

Then, whatever reason he got he took them on their word and resubmitted Goemon 4 (but then suddenly the OLDER submission reappeared magically) as well as a news article.

DDS clearly means the original submitter, not Pennywise (who didn't do the original romhack submission, someone else is... and RHDN mods are actually noticing this thread and not only erasing the submission history but even editing forum topics, to hide their actions and the impact this has on their "credibility" among romhackers as an upload hub)

I do wish DDS would clarify things in private with Pennywise to avoid misplaced anger, because it comes off as ungrateful if left up to interpretation.

>> No.6766294 [DELETED]

>>6764446
Him lashing off at the uploader directly could be because he perceived it as yet another power move. Same fuckers from that moderation team were buggering him daily during the resetera lynching to force "DM closed" DDS to "listen and obey" to the mobs demands if he wants anything approved.

On the bright side, he's finally considering opening a website to host his romhacks. At the rate he's pumping up romhacks with Tom, it would have more content than Aeon Genesis.

So based, I wish I could send DDS something to show off my gratitude. Gonna be playing these games on my CRT sometime soon.

A year back I had to watch Goemon be shilled to obscurity again after the disgusting Sans-"hype" that transpired Smash-fandom during Terry's reveal. So much for "Mii Costumes" being tributes, it's done nothing for Goemon-series' awareness as far as I've observed.
Not surprising, of course - but was yet another wave of cynicism to deal with as a long-running Goemon-fan.

Now I can rest knowing Goemon's legacy can be experienced in full for anyone who happens to find their way to it, unlike years ago. Maybe that could help drive slow resurgence of the fanbase for a revival someday when Konami gets their act together.

DS one has yet to be translated though.
Uchuu is close to completion, so that's a plus.
I have reasons to think even though Tom is back, he won't touch Dynamites again.
But he's open to collaborating with other romhackers. God bless his kind soul.

Some unrelated Tom projects are back on track (a GBA megaten, zill o zill, super chinese world 2, vernes world which seems really interesting in that the final boss is the game software) and the ties between that trio of chads (DDS, FlashPV, Tom) weren't weakened because of the deplatforming scare, but even stronger than ever.
And DDS is opening a personal homepage for maintaining his past projects, which is always good news.

He's not.

This Tom was accidentally doxed a few years ago which deconfirmed that.
That and Xseed's Tom (who goes by wyrdward in fan translation circles, but only did some anime stuff mainly) interacted with him a bunch of times, and Xseed Tom is now in Japan.
There's a third Tom in the fan translation scene but he's long retired.

Someone here is deleting any mentions that

a) The original blacklisting of DDS and Goemon 2/3 and any of his new content is still in full effect to this day, they never appear in front page results

b) Goemon 4 was rejected then mysteriously reappeared when Pennywise got involved, submission history got deleted

c) The romhacks appearance on RHDN wasn't by DDS, and was a power move because RHDN mods are salty that major releases happen outside their sphere of influence

d) RHDN mods accidentally admitted they're salty at DDS because of last year drama because they cancelled Zynk Oxyde for not approving a hack fast enough and DDS wrote "resetera is cancer", not tranny shit. PLUS they were caught in his resetera members twitter blocklist

For you to then come now, and say it's all roses and sunshine with RHDN.
The website whose moderation tried to pressure TWO groups (DDS, MrRichard999) into disbanding or else they and their romhacks won't be allowed on site as they associate with wrongthinkers.

How convenient. Some HG101 goon cleaning up the chat so that "/vr/ is usable again" in the terms of Kunt Kutala?

tl;dr PSA - Learn from DDS' situation. Self-host your romhacks and never cower to compromised shitholes.
P.S. Most of the mods at RHDN have no prior romhacking experience and are only there for the power trip or nepotism. A resetera cell there is using past history of a pedo/neo-nazi moderator there as a blackmailing chip to get their decision making passed, and it seems to be working.
