How come Capcom never ported a single fighting game to the N64?
I mean look at this controller, it has 6 face buttons and a solid d-pad. Furthermore the N64 could handle 2D just fine and if they could fit SFA2 on a SNES cartridge they sure as shit could have done the same for the 64.
So why didn't they do it bros?

n64 cartridges were expensive and everyone hated them
also, have you noticed that most people remember fondly RARE games but not japanese ones on it? because the n64 was a gargantuan failure in japan and was only modestly succesful in the us, so 99 times out of 100 nip developers skipped it when deciding where to port something

>6 face buttons
The C-buttons are too small to be considered real buttons.

Expensive cartridges and it would've felt like a waste with the N64's focus on 3D graphics.

It also has a floppy stick with yuge throw which is ideal for fightan games

They did. It's literally called Super Smash Bros, bros. One of the greatest fightan games of all time. You know it's true. Don't deny it.

yes, we used to play Tekken 3 with an actual controller designed for all genres, and not for just platformers and adventure games

It sure as shit beats the not-retro Gaycube controller. At least the buttons are reasonably placed and more or less the same size and shape.

2D games didn’t port well to the N64, Nintendo didn’t want 2D games on the system As they were considered “passé”. Seriously.

they weren't exactly wrong, 3D was hot shit at the time, and people were interested in seeing what 3D had to offer

I understand but in my opinion that’s petty short sighted thinking. Nintendo’s president at the time was incredibly short sighted.

We almost didn’t get Castlevania: SotN for similar reasons but thankfully Sony caved. Funny looking back considering the original Tomb Raider and it’s “fancy” 3D graphics came out around the same time.

>n64 cartridges were expensive
Basically this is the real answer. Also, fighting games during 5th gen were already waning out, the Mortal Kombat craze started to die, Street Fighter wasn't ever as popular again after Alpha 2, and still the Alpha series wasn't as popular as SFII and all its incarnations, and SNK fighters were mostly popular only in Japan and south america. Companies like Capcon and SNK figured they'd rather port for CD systems since it was cheaper.
I agree it's a missed opportunity due to the 6 button pad though. At least Killer Instinct Gold is there.
>also, have you noticed that most people remember fondly RARE games but not japanese ones on it?
N64 was decidedly a weird system, and most of its early support came from western developers/published like Midway and Acclaim. That said, the system wasn't a failure in Japan, it got slightly outsold by Saturn in terms of hardware, but it sold more software, some of which are the best selling games of the generation.
Also, although more on the "hidden gem" side (at least in normie world), japanese N64 games like Mystical Ninja or Mischief Makers are beloved within N64 enthusiasts.
>>6730894
>Nintendo didn’t want 2D games on the system
Don't think that's the real case, since Nintendo themselves did 2D games (Yoshi's Story), and some early N64 games in Japan, like Wonder Project J2, were 2D.
But yes, given that the system's forte was 3D, and that 3D is what most people expected out of 5th gen, and that producing carts was expensive, most developers/published were more encouraged to make 3D games if they were going to invest on N64 development.

i know where you're coming from, but it'd be pretty weird if they hyped up the systems' 3D capabilities for years only to have major games in 2D on it
though it's easy to imagine clueless higher ups being offered a 2D game and going "3D is the new thing, make it 3D"

There’s a big difference between heavily rasterized graphics and something like Yoshi’s Story. Even something like Street Fighter Alpha 2 would barely run on N64. That game ran pretty terrible on the PSX even.

Yoshi's Story is 100% 2D though.
I don't think Alpha 2 would have major problems running on a N64. Maybe it'd need to be one of the larger memory cartridges in order to fit everything, but I don't see why the system wouldn't be able to run it.

>> No.6731148

Games like Yoshi’s Story were built for the N64 and built with it’s capabilities in mind. Capcom would have to basically rewrite something like SF Alpha 2 from the ground up. it’s much harder to port existing 2D games to a system designed to run 3D titles. Obviously it wasn’t worth it and I’m betting the results would have been embarrassing and not even close to arcade perfect.
