I thought that hack that makes it so you don't have to get the birds would make it better but every level looks the same.
If Sega had pulled off a game that was half as good as Mario 64 they would still be a thing. No way I wouldn't have cried to my parents until I got that. Instead I felt bad for these kids who only had a saturn.

Imagine if instead of a full-fledged Super Mario 64, Nintendo only used that engine as a level select for classic titles and concept art.

If this was the hubworld for a NiGHTS-style 2.5D game, I think you'd have a pretty solid game.

Wasted potential: the game. I hope somebody uses that engine to make an actual Sonic platformer for the Saturn someday

A 32 Bit Sonic game wouldn't have worked, only a Dreamcast is powerful enough to handle a next generation Sonic Game and I say this as a fan of both the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast.

It could have, just not on SoJ's Shiturn. Now with SGI's hardware that they proposed to them, on the other hand...

Well no shit he'd only talk about the games that he was the lead programmer on.

I actually do think "collect flickies and take them to a central location to deposit" is actually a pretty solid blue print for a 3D Sonic collect-a-thon platformer but isometric 3D is shit and it wouldn't have been any better in legit 3D either since you could not make a level big enough to make satisfying usage of Sonic's speed in the 5th generation of games or even the Dreamcast likely.

They literally stole the whole gameplay from a past game and put Sonic in the lead role with a fake 3D slant.
