Just got Hellfire for the Sega Genesis.
Why did no one tell me about this game, /vr/? Fire in all directions, one shot kills, bullets everywhere, tons of details and really long stages. All that in 1990! In fucking love, right now.

Also, let's make this a shmup general

What "retro" thing? The retro craze ended in the mid 2000s.

Don't tell me now that moot made a board, you actually think the world is experiencing some sort of retro renaissance.

Okay, I sort of love this game. The five direction lightning and the auto-target lightning on big enemies feels incredible.

However, after playing the arcade version, I just don't know if I can go back to the Genesis one. I mean, surely they could have managed a slightly prettier, harder, and more intense port than what we got, right?

that blue laser fucking sucks its the most casual weapon. I prefer to face my enemies and blow them the fuck away with the green weapon. Truxton is a really early mega drive game one of the first 25 games on the system. PC engine version is closer to the arcade but the music isnt as good. The genesis one was from the era when sega was buying the licenses to arcade games and releasing them on the megadrive(Forgotten Worlds, Ghouls N Ghosts). the pc engine one came out years after so its kind of expected to be a more accurate port.

The PC Engine version looks pretty good, but the colors are a bit less accurate than the Genesis. I can see that some might prefer that kind of saturation and palette though.

But other than not having that big black bar on the side of the screen, I don't see how it's more accurate, especially with the inferior hardware.

Man, the Genesis version of Hellfire is the best. The increasing bonus system and the superior music after the first stage makes it better than the arcade version. As for the PC-Engine version, the remixed soundtrack is rubbish (not nearly as good add the Zero Wing one), the sound effects are just shit, many areas are significantly easier than in the other versions, and there is a respawn system. This is bad because the checkpoints in Hellfire are beautifully designed, being some of the fairest I've ever seen on a game. Unlike Gradius and R-Type, when you die you don't lose the functionality of your so, making the level design still approachable. And the fact that your bonus chain resets on death makes things more interesting.

>bought a genesis primarily for shmups (well, shouldn't say primarily, but it was one of the big selling points for me)
>the retro game stores near me have not a single fucking shmup
>NOT A SINGLE
>SHMUP

Hoping for some scores at the flea market this weekend. Wish me luck!

Does it really matter what people call them as long as they know what you're talking about? Just play them and have fun

I got this game on the Gauntlet once. Really fun TG-16 cute 'em up. I actually played through it once more after I finished it for the gauntlet. Gotta love the TG-16 for shooters.

Magical Chase is a fun game. It is too bad that it is so rare as a card, jhaving been produced near the end of the life of the TG-16.

In my brain it is a side scrolling Tohou game starring Marisa

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0HfzY2IzCo Here, this is the first Thunder Force. The Sharp X1 games were not pretty.

>> No.677485

Why did Thunder Force start bad, get a bit worse, get better, then get MUCH better, then get worse again?

Thunder Force 4 is the best one in my opinion.

What does /vr/ think of Hydorah?

It's a Gradius clone, but I think it's a bit easy.

>> No.678516

R-Type and Gradius are hard because they're poorly designed.

Cave's games are hard because they're fast and hectic, and require good reflexes and quick thinking. R-Type and Gradius are hard because they suckerpunch you constantly.

>>678151
Hydorah is basically a version of Gradius that doesn't force you to memorize all its cheapshots. So yeah, it's pretty easy.

>R-Type and Gradius are hard because they're poorly designed.

No, it sounds to me like you're just pretty stupid like most modern kiddies who want to get into the genre without putting in any effort.

>Cave's games are hard because they're fast and hectic

Case and point.

I don't think you've actually played a Cave game.
