I've actually been playing through the series' one players modes recently because I was curious how a one player port of an MSX game with borrowed Lode Runner graphics become mainly a multiplayer game with the occasional RPG or adventure game.

Going on to '94/Mega next (Skipping 3D because as far as I can tell no-one's made a ROM of it), '93 or Bomberboy (The first GB one that has a different non-Bomberman related title in ever other region) are the best. Super still has the best mulitplayer so far.

One thing that never ceased to impress me with SNES in Japan is that companies (both little and big ones) kept supporting it even with Playstation having conquered the market. Take for example Mega Man & Bass which was released in 1998. And with Bomberman we had Super Bomberman 5 released in 1997, something that explains why it wasn't released in the west. It did, since Mega is a pretty faithful port in functionality.

As for gameplay, it did lose the 5-player mode, and got a 4-player mode instead. Also, Mega has more slowdown.

One thing Mega added was the rocket-shooting penguins in the ice level, but that's it.

Since barely anybody in the west owns a PC Engine, Mega is a pretty good alternative. However, if you do own a PCE, you owe it to yourself to get '94, which isn't too expensive.

Also, '93 never got ported anywhere, and is a highlight in the series. This game did get an american release on the Turbografx-16.

So, which one would you guys suggest I emulate for multiplayer when I get a couple of friends over? Don't mind if it's one of the non-english one but Saturn is right out (tried emulating it with two emulators, didn't work on this shitty comp)

I'd say Party Edition for the ps1.
Many good memories from playing it with friends in the past.

Bomberman '94(PC Engine) or Super Bomberman 2(SNES) are both great classic Bomberman games, which should work without a problem on emulators.

Hero was hardly a bomberman game. It didn't even have multiplayer if I remember correctly.

It was pretty much just a platformer where you throw bombs. Yeah.

I still thought it was kinda fun though.

I run most of my emulators off of an original Xbox and used Bomberman 94 to convert all of my friends into Bombermam fans. The Xbox emulator lets you speed up the emulator when you hold the right trigger. We all enjoy extreme speed mode. There's a stage with a special feature of extreme speed so boosting the emulator on that stage with the green Rooie whose special ability is dashing fast is wicked fun.

Gonna have to agree with Atomic Bomberman. Had a great redesign of the suits, fantastic musical score, and funny as hell voice clips

Also think Bomberman Party Edition is worth a mention. Great selection of characters

I've never seen those figures before, they look amazing.

Is there some sort of fansite that catalogs all the merchandise? I've been looking for something of standard white Bomberman for about a month, and I'd resigned into just getting one of the marble shooting ones whenever I find one, but if there is actually correct design toys out there-

Holy shit I just played 93 and 94 for the first time and 80% of Super Bomberman 3 is lifted straight out of those games. No wonder they didn't bother releasing it in the US.

If someone remade Atomic, the first thing they would need to do is add graphics that look like they were made by an actual artist.

After marathoning the whole Super Bomberman series I can say these things about it:

1 is alright. Not a huge improvement over the NES games. Aesthetics and sound are kind of weird and not very Bomberman-like in a way.

2 is fucking great. Some of the best level design, THE best music and nice graphics in addition to balanced gameplay.

3 is a step down from 2. It's alright on its own but rehashes SO MUCH from the Turbografx-16 games, it's almost not worth playing if you played those.

4 feels like it was made in one afternoon. I don't know what Hudson was thinking when they made this.

5 is surprisingly good and very lengthy, but the level progression is weird and confusing. Graphics and sound are a definite step up from 4.

I didn't have a chance to try the multiplayer, so the above is singleplayer only.

Agree. But when it comes to multiplayer, 5 is definitely the best, 3 is second. Unfortunately, some maps are shitty and almost unplayable, but the rest is really fun.

One thing I like about 3 is how they added the simple colored Rooeys from '94, but added a jump for the pink one instead of the dance. It's a great alternative if you don't have access to a TG-16/PCE.
