I actually agree. Retro to me is the 2D era. I only lump in early 3D because it was a transitional stage. A lot of games on the Playstation, for example, are still utilising 2D game design. MGS could easily be a 2D game. Crash Bandicoot is basically DKC with a Z axis. N64 games still frequently made use of sprites. Pre-rendered backgrounds are really 2D game elements. Everyone was still figuring out the way things are supposed to play and feel in 3D. I feel like 3D gaming as we know it didn't fully arrive until the PS2.

The term retro is pretty shit, I associate it with shit like the spectrum because that's what people called 'retro' when I was a kid, if it just means old games, then fucking skyrim counts as retro at this point.
Then again I prefer the games discussed on this board than on /v/, even though I'd consider some 6th and even 7th gen games /vr/ applicable at this point, maybe retro should mean gameplay styles and methods that have fallen out of vogue, more than anything else.

It's far more similar to half life than Mario Bros is to SotN. Some versions of Arctic Fox had wireframes, others were full models. Most importantly the gameplay is fully 3D. It's a free roaming first person perspective shooting game in a large 3D space. Not like Doom's pseudo-3D, it's a regular 3D environment. And it's far from the only game like that, it just happens to be one I played a ton of. It's utterly ridiculous to say 3D gaming only came about in 6th gen.

I'm sure for some out of there, a game released in 2007 feels ancient and "retro".
For people who actually experienced the move from 2D to 3D, it's a pretty easy way to distinguish the two eras.
