By being a boomer and knowing that gaming magazines back then were just as important as the games itself.
You bought a magazine and took it to school and showed your friends, you wrote shit down or bought your own magazine.
Yeah it could have been done without a magazine, you could have called the Nintendo help line, you could have spoken to everybody in the game hoping for a clue.
but most kids just bought a magazine or had a subscription.

I replayed Ocarina after decades and one thing I realise is that it is absurdly, ridiculously easy. I've rushed through the game (almost blind, I didn't remember shit) in 2 days. Without guides of course.

As a kid it took like a year. Why are kids so retarded?

Some do, some don't. I'd say that games which rely more on exploration, logic, puzzle solving, etc get a bit easier, but games that rely on reflexes probably have a bell curve of sorts, where you get better at them up to a certain age, and then start to fall off. I'm 32 and feel like I can still learn to 1CC slower stuff that relies more on planning and memorization with raw reflexes falling a bit down the list (beat em ups, older shmups, and the like), but the chances of me learning to 1CC a fast bullet hell shmup from scratch are probably near zero - I just can't react quickly enough without getting flustered, to the point that I couldn't make it to the "relying on muscle memory" stage. Granted, I would say that if I'd played a lot of that genre in my teens and twenties I'd think I could continue to learn new titles, but as it is, it seems insurmountable.

And no matter how hard I try, I will never beat Metaknight on the hardest Samurai Kirby mode, without luck. I think my reflexes top out at the tie mark.

I'm 32 myself, and while I'm certainly healthier and more skilled at a lot of things than I was at 17, I definitely feel like my capacity for fast twitch gaming could never compete with somebody in their late teens and early 20s.

A lot of the time as a kid I just went though the motions while playing, never really thinking of where to go or what to do when solving puzzles. When I ran into a dead end it was always in the Temples and it was ALWAYS because of either missing 1 key or the puzzle being vague.

The parts I got stuck on were:
>Missed the first key in the entrance of the Forest Temple
>Didn't think I could reach the ledge door with the fire wall that chases you room in the Fire Temple
>Didn't know there was a hidden room under the platform after raising the water level inside the middle pillar room in the Water Temple (the 3ds version fucking SHOWS you it's there after raising the water level which makes me laugh)
>Didn't know you had to use Din's Fire to burn the spiked walls in the Shadow Temple until after a friend's brother did it for me
>Didn't know you had to shoot the bombflower near the pillar in the Shadow Temple
