No matter how many times I’ve picked up this game over the years I’ve never been able to figure out the gameplay. Everything seems random, the goal is unclear, and worst of all, I have no idea what the story is supposed to be. Why is Toad running around in some forest? What’s with Birdo? And what does Wario have to do with anything? My punishment for not having the manual, I guess.

Happened to me with pic related. Not actually bought, but I rented it expecting it to be a Yoshi platformer. The game wasn't bad but not what I expected at all.
At least Yoshi's Island came out eventually, and I was pleased.

Favorite snes game! Like tetris but colorful and different with a ok soundtrack. After being burnt out on platformers and rugs this has been pretty cozy to go back too

I feel like I would like this game a lot more if it was play until the other person loses instead of play until someone clears. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't remember an option for this either and if that's true, it's retarded because otherwise the mechanics and everything are fun and cool.

The difference is that one is a genre of games and the other is a title for a specific game. The article says "standard" right there. For Mario that's just a subtitle, it's hardly even comparable.
