Thoughts on Super Mario World Redrawn? Is the artstyle an improvement?

>> No.6699164

fuck no, I appreciate the effort but it doesn't look right. The artstyle looks like something I'd see in a fangame and it doesn't fit the 90s aesthetic of the SNES

>> No.6699172

I've seen lots of ROM hacks that look the same if not better. What's special about this one?

It's amazing how consistently bad rom hacks look when they try to do their own spritework. I think bad taste is a prerequisite for being a rom hacker

The advice given to modern pixel artists is reductive, based off the same handful of tutorials and treats the GBA as the peak of pixel art. It all looks the fucking same.

>treats the GBA as the peak of pixel art
Really? Pixel art took a major nosedive in the GBA era, especially (but not limited to) the backgrounds. Famicom, MD, earlier arcade games, and Super Famicom games all looked much better

You know how games in the GBA were bright and hypersaturated and had raised blacks so you can actually see what's happening on the non backlit screen?

After the system was replaced, the technique never went away. It's just what pixel art looks like now.

No, you simply believe in your autism enough that it’s actualizing itself into your day to day life

Looks ugly as fuck. Most of the shading is borderline pillow and SMW style was all about bright colours and contrast, not this muted-by-comparison shit.

I remember the initial project at acmlm's and the advent of icegoom himself - it was exciting and fresh, plus the effort was considerable.
Sadly it hasn't aged well and in the end it was used in too many shitty hacks that it's just nauseous to look at today.

How can I refute a thesis that says “everything looks like this now” to your satisfaction? You strike me as the kind of nigger who would literally want “everything” to be posted before you shifted your opinion.

I think the pixelart in Mario games never stood out.
There's a fangame called Super Mario Flashback which have graphics that are really vibrant and full of personality.

I think the artists responsible have confused detail with quality, this hack looks nice in screenshot, but you quickly realize that the enemies have terrible animation and are incongrous to the game, such asthe koopas are facing the screen slightly, so they have these weird terrible sliding gait. Yoshi looks terrible, the limitations of the engine make it so that it's crucial to select your keyframes correcly, but yoshi has his feet keyed in a way that looks completely stilted, and they've updated him around the more modern design so it looks completely unnatural for Mario to be riding him.

I was really, really put off looking at this romhack, if they wanted to completely reskin the game they might have been better off disassembling the engine and retooling it around higher framerate animations and a retooled Yoshi, as it stands I can't recommend this at all.

This is exactly what was going through my mind when I saw OP's mage.
Like it was drawn by someone who's first experience with pixel art was his shitty GBA, and now he's trying to redraw it in the style he considers the best. (because he grew up with it)

When you call someone who isn’t Black a nigger, you are comparing them to a Black person, which is an insult.

He didn't say everything looked like that now. His claim was that everyone started copying this look and still do today. Do I have to give another example other than the one he gave you? Try Stardew Valley. There are plenty of so-called "retro" style indie games that marry saturated colors with raised blacks. It feels like almost no one does high contrast sprite sprite art with black outlines anymore, which is how games looked in the NES and SNES era more often than not.

>> No.6700085

>>6700068
Or you could just not be using the word that way. There's a large precedent for using that word not as an insult to black people, and you don't get to decide how other people use words.

You're right. I made a blanket statement about literally every modern 2D game when I should have just said it was a popular design trend,

In fairness to the artists who use it, it could be that most desktop LCDs have darker and lower contrast displays than CRTs.

The colours actually weren't that oversaturated on an original GBA. They only look that way on an sRGB display because the GBA had a unique colourspace.
