6693304 No.6693304 [Reply] [Original]

Sqaure-Enix is still selling brand new PS1 games on their official website in 2020. Just thought I would let you guys know. This is really interesting to me. The ps2 came out 20 years ago and we are on the cusp of the PS5, and you can still buy new sealed ps1 games from an official retailer. Crazy to me. Imagine if nintendo was still selling a few N64 games on their website. I guess this must be new old stock. Looks like chrono cross is sold out, but I ordered FF9 and FF1&2

I was wondering if they are still being printed. I don't get why they would still print a few ps1 games in 2020. If they are printing new ones, why not charge more than $15? I know CDs are cheap to produce, but final fantasy 9 is a four disc game, that comes in a big case with art and a manuel. And why only print these games? Would they still even have the license to print new ps1 games in 2020? Maybe your copy of ff9 was printed after they became sqaure enix?

Last time I saw this thread posted here, someone said they did a massive reprinting of these games during the PS3 era since PS3 was backwards compatible with PS1 games. These are leftovers from that print run. This printing is unique in that the discs all have silver backs, instead of the black that was standard for PS1 games.

I guess I can believe it. They were still selling ps1 games at gamestop right up until the ps3 came out. There was still ps1 games coming out in 2002-2004ish, although few and far between. I guess it's not crazy to think that they printed some ps1 games in 2006, considering ps2 and ps3 could play them. I just wonder if they're still being printed today, and if so why?

Agreed, and I have no way of verifying whether that random anon was right or not. But it makes about as much sense as them having this much leftover stock from the end of the PS1's life. The earliest mention online of silver-back Square games that I can find are from 2010, which all refer to them as "recent" reprints, but again, no way to confirm that's actually the case.

It isn't as unlikely as you seem to think.
>TONS of copies
Debatable, they probably knew they wouldn't sell well and didn't print many.
>EXACTLY these three games
These are the only three left in stock, they had pretty much every Square game for PS1 at one point.
>for ONLY the ntsc region
Admittedly this is strange, you'd think they'd at least do the same for Japan. Or maybe they did, and we just don't know about it because none of us are Japanese?
>because americans sure as hell are willing to buy this NEXT GEN console that will only cost US$599.99 to plax FFIX
Obviously not the intention
>all they have to do is walk into their local gamestop nearby and just ask for a factory sealed copy of Final Fantasy Origins
I can't remember when Gamestop phased out PS1 stuff, but according to old (~2010-11) forum posts, lots of people did indeed purchase copies from this print run from brick and mortar stores.

CDs are incredibly cheap to print same with DVDs, hence why both are still commonly printed. Many companies if they place a large order can get CDs or DVDs made for around 70 cents each. So even if you sell them for just $15 a pop, that’s pretty good profit margin.

They would likely buy in bulk from Square Enix and get a better deal per unit than what they're sold for online. Obviously they would make a profit. Also we don't even know if they had these on their website at first. For all we know the only way to get these reprints at first was to buy in bulk from Square Enix (or buying from a store that bought them in bulk).
>you're a genius sneed i'm sure as hell people want to buy this game in 2010
You're on a retro game forum and are somehow confused by the idea of people wanting to play older games?
>let's put it in our store window and advertise it so people who buy this will realize it's not working on their ps3 because only the first print of 60gigs ps3 are backwards compatible

Like >>6693528 said there are some cheap-ish options, but if you want to play on original/compatible hardware from original software, you've gotta get used to shelling out the money for it. There is almost no possibility of the mythical crash people make bait threads on here about. The only way the games are going to get cheaper is if people stop buying them at the prices sellers are proposing, and that is not likely to happen considering that the prices are as high as they are now exactly because people will pay the price. It's possible that at some point the market will flatline because the prices really are just too high for anyone to have an interest in buying, but I'm not holding my breath on it. If a game means that much to you and you can see supply draining and demand increasing on it, you best open your wallet and your anus.

Here's what I think. Squaresoft games were always a reason to own a Playstation. I remember back in the early 2000s when Walmart stopped selling most PS1 games you could still find a bunch of Squaresoft titles. Most likely there was a high enough demand that they kept making new printings. I don't know how high the demand is anymore, but it was likely so high back in the day that they made quite a few and have tons of stock left over. That's the only reason I can think of why they'd still be selling them. Most likely the last printing was in the mid 2000s though.

Oohh baby. Nice. I wish I had pokemon red, blue, and yellow, but that's in my brothers game collection. So is pokemon pinball, Zelda DX, and Oracle of seasons. I need to collect those. I do have Pokemon Crystal and ruby at least.

Wives are too expensive these days. I'm waiting for the market to crash. The reseller market is ridiculous. Might just import one from Japan heard they're cheaper over there.

they were probably stamping discs until the ps3 era since ps1 games ran on it. Now they're just burning through the remaining stock.

for those wondering, the serial is the same as the regular greatest hits release, and redump confirms the contents of the disc remain identical as well
one unique thing about them is the fact they don't have the dark red ("black") dye they used for regular psx games, they're just regular transparent plastic

Or you can get a PS1 or PS2 for like $50, mod them, and have the game that way.
And why a PS3? Were you going to buy it on the digital store (lol). PS3 doesn't output 240p, so it would still look odd on your CRT.
