I have both n64 castlevanias downloaded. But, it's because they're not even metroidvania, so it' hardly a castlevania game when REAL castlevania games for retro nerds were pre-metroidvanian, and this shit is post metroid tier.

The game is hated everywhere, but on /vr/ specifically there are enough hardcore Castlevania fans, me included, to actually have enjoyed it.
But it'd be insane to say that this game is even remotely good. It's a fucking mess. The good part is it feels like a real Castlevania and, thus, gets a pass. To me personally, CV64 and Legacy of Darkness feel more like a part of the series than Bloodlines. Similarly, nonsense like Lords of Shadow are better games (though not by much lmao), but worse Castlevania experiences. So it has value for fans, although not much beyond that.

CV64 was always met with some criticism, but upon release it actually received positive reception. There was definitely no hate, mostly a 7.5 or 8 game.
Much like with DK64, it's in retrospect that it started to get actual hate or harsh criticism.
It's an actually decent 3D adventure/action game and as another anon said actually manages to feel like a classicvania in 3D, although some stages are more adventure-focused or even sort of survival horror-ish, some others are more linear and focused on platforming and action.
Personally, I enjoy it but it took me some time to get used to its controls. Once I learned how to dodge attacks (a sort of subtle mechanic that's never explained, at least not in-game) the game becomes much more manageable and fun. But as anon already said, it is probably a game that, nowadays, can mostly only be enjoyed by fans of Castlevania, or at least people who are very interested in early 3D action games.
One thing I can comment I love about it is the different outcomes in the game depending on what you do, especially the character Lenon, probably one of the most interesting item sales guys in any game I've played. Not just because of his particular appearance, but also because he's a hidden boss.
Dracula's true form and Death battles are bat shit insane, too.
>>6692309
>but from what I gather LoD basically contains all of it's content, but plays better.
I never played LoD but from what I've read, the CV64 levels got redesigned, I think made a little bit shorter/simplified. Also, CV64 has special Simon and Maria costumes you can unlock for Reinhardt and Carrie. There are unlockable costumes in LoD but they aren't the same ones.

I honestly don't have any major complaint about it, other than "it doesn't have free camera".
It's still far from being a great game, as the Goemon games also developed by Konami on the N64, but it's also not what I'd consider a bad game, not even close.
A bad game is Superman 64, not this. This is decent and perfectly playable, and if you enjoy the atmosphere, story and lore, it's pretty enjoyable.

There was immediately a lot of backlash against 3D versions of 2D franchises, because they didn't live up to their predecessors, but I think now that time has past, people are learning to re-evaluate them, and appreciate what they got right.
For a long time, Megaman Legends was looked at as Megaman's failed attempt to transition into 3D, but now people realise it was never really attempting to be like the sidescrollers anyway, and it has a lot of it's own appeal.

I agree. I don't hate Metroid-likes, I enjoyed Hollow Knight, Axiom Verge, and so on, but Symphony of the Night just didn't do it for me. Castlevania 64 and LoD really sucked me in, they're a little janky but I prefer that janky action to SotN's braindead easy boring action. Symphony of the Night has great visuals and music but I'm better off just looking at screenshots or listening to the music on YouTube there, I really don't like playing it.

I played it for the first time last year. Loved it, I have no idea why the hate. The atmosphere and music is great, there's some cool story ideas like having more than just one vampire in the entire game like most CVs, and you get two characters. It's a great CV.

Isn't AVGN often used as a strawman for anti-nintendo people to justify why some people might like certain Nintendo games, etc?
Well, AVGN trashed CV64, so no.
CV64 is liked by classicvania fans for its ties with the classic series in terms of aesthetic and tone, instead of the more bishounen approach of the metroidvanias, and also probably liked by people who actually enjoy early 3D action adventure titles and don't bitch about things like camera.
It has little to do with console wars.

If he got to the mandragora part and still didn't enjoy it for what it is, I don't think he will enjoy the rest. I haven't watched that video in a while, but if he didn't enjoy the fact the game has actual vampire enemies other than dracula (which IIRC, you can see before the mandragora part), then I don't think he will be hooked. But who knows.
Although the review was from The Nerd, not James. Maybe James doesn't actually hate it, who knows.

The controls are a bit janky but I wouldn't call them completely god awful.
One major tip I can give you is that you can dodge by tilting the stick (in either left, right, or down/backwards) at the same time as you press the jump button. It will make the character do a small hop in that direction. Extremely useful when fighting enemies.

It's underrated IMO. Everybody has a huge hateboner for it but I always enjoyed it. I'll admit that the camera is wonky as hell but you get used to it. It was the first attempt at a 3D Castlevania game and was made when 3D games were very new and not thoroughly figured out yet. I think it was fine for when it was made with the wonky camera being the only exception. Game has great atmosphere IMO.
