I think OP is pointing out some texture issues on the stairs?

>> No.6691048

I noticed that it's not a stealth GBA, GC, XBOX, or PS2 thread.

Looks like the UV mapping on the stairs changed between revisions

interesting. i'm guessing they changed it from an upright diagonal-line texture to a tilted straight-line texture to work better with the bilinear texture interpolation. i didn't realize this was an issue and had a work around

The N64 had 3 point texture filtering. Bottom is what it's supposed to look like, but most emulators show top.

no

Does the Mario 64 PC port use 3-point filtering?

>> No.6691364

i made this composite, it was in response to someone talking about N64's bilinear filtering
the top screenshot is with an emulator using regular bilinear filtering
the bottom screenshot is with an emulator using N64's 3-point bilinear approximation
point being that N64's filtering is a simplified version of bilinear that causes some weird effects, including causing a kind of diagonal blurring, which is exploited here by modelling the stairs to match it
this is the same revision of the game, the only difference is the filtering method (regular bilinear vs. n64's actual method)

The emulator 3-point still doesn't looks quite right. I hate the N64 but there's an angular smear that I don't recall being in there in the original hardware, the bottom of the staircase where the rim of the stairs has the texture widens seems to be inaccurate. Still better than nothing.

There's nothing noteworthy in that picture so I guess you have autism?

I actually had to tilt my head 90 degrees and cross my eyes to tell the difference. Good spot though.

Yes you can see streaks on the brickwork at the same angle on the bottom one.
