It's interesting how from the early explosion of content, now there is only a trickle, even though there is likely more in there people haven't seen yet. There is such a gulf between those who have the know-how to look through the deeper data and the unwashed masses who cannot.

One can see this in an exception to that fact - by the ALTTP data, where only a small group of experts uncovered the beginnings of the absolute treasure trove that was there and released it anonymously so we plebs could see it. If they had not released those tile sheets and data, it's likely no one would've even seen most of it and we would only have seen a few tiles that came out earlier like the demon head tile and deku tree one, but not the whole dungeons and proto world map.

>> No.6673320

>>6673302
probably because not everything being found is as interesting as the Luigi model. i'd also wager a lot of it is like code and stuff, not the kind of thing you can get a huge dopamine hit posting to twitter or whatever. i wonder if some of it too is modders and the like who are planning on repurposing the things being found and are working on them like the medallion spells in OoT - they were hacked together to be semi-functional but they aren't 100%, so it's very possible things are being found but just aren't in a state to be shown to the public yet.

Ura Zelda and Zelda X are different names for the same thing. Zelda X was an internal name, while Ura was the aimed release title (as you see with Master Quest in Japan). Ura Zelda (as I'll call it from here forward) was largely just a remixed Ocarina of Time. This was known because the only areas that we knew (at the time) that Retail Z64 tried calling from 64DD were dungeon maps.

Much of the misunderstanding about Ura Zelda comes from a few things.
1. Triforce Rumours. Everyone remembers them. Most of us probably hunted for them. It became a common rumour that Ura Zelda would unlock a way to get to the Triforce.
2. Zeth's Ura Zelda project. A bunch of people thought this was recovering existing assets and then THAT spread around.
3. Existing beta elements in the final rom (such as unfinished demo shots and cutscene areas) that were just off base enough from what we knew in the final to fan the flames.
Many of these things led a large amount of people to believe that Ura Zelda would be a full story and world expansion to Ocarina of Time.

From what I saw with the leaks I think those're some very early 3D tests for possibly what would become Mario Kart 64 running on a Silicon Graphics Indy Workstation, which I believe is what Nintendo used for very early N64 development before the system was finalized (I think SM64 used the same setup for most of it's development too; Indy workstations while working within the guidelines of how the N64 would turn out.) As for why those workstations the N64 graphics hardware at least is based on SG designs so it makes sense to use one of the workstations as a basis for dev work before proper dev kit hardware even exists.

As for why it reminds you of Jurassic Park, the 3D file manager program included in the workstation's OS was used in the movie, it wasn't just something they made up to make computer stuff more exciting.

Probably SCad? Depends on the person, and what exactly you mean by tile data. I used SCad to view the animations I posted, although SCad's OBJ file import is broken. It reads the sprites in reverse order so they end up layered backwards, and it swaps the tile ID and attribute bytes so the graphics come out all garbled. I had to write a little command line tool to "fix" OBJ files before I could view them properly.
There's also a seperate OBJ viewer that this twitter user made that would probably be easier to use https://mobile.twitter.com/TheLX5
If you just want to view the graphics (CGX files) a lot of people seem to be using YY-CHR.
If you want to view maps I'd use SCad, but some people have been using a program called M1TE for that.

Delda released the Deku tree in its map context and a proto eastern palace. Wow.

We can tell from the proto-ALTTP overworld that the Deku tree and friends were meant to be where the end of the lost woods is now. Perhaps an alternate way to get the master sword was originally planned at one point in dev since the Deku tree is where the master sword would normally be.

yes, yes it can, because it's an emulator
the transfer pak is just that, it transfers the rom into n64 memory, where it's emulated
even if it was a true cartridge slot directly connected to the n64 memory bus, it would still be emulation, since neither the transfer pak nor n64 actually contains any gameboy hardware

Someone asked about this char on the previous thread.

I don't know if it's a specific one, but it's wearing a stereotypical thief costume from Japan, with a napkin tied around his head. Akin to the striped clothes we see in cartoon thieves.

Just put 泥棒 on Google images for a reference. Might be a one-time joke.

Nintendo has the source code for a lot of games that aren't theirs. Super Castlevania IV was also found in the leak, as was Super Ghouls and Ghosts, from Konami and Capcom respectively.

So watching the A link to the Past beta sprite I notice this weird SabreTooth Tiger, and found curious its similarity to a subboss in Oracle of Seasons. I know it was made by Capcom but I can't stop wondering if there was some inspiration or even access to this beta stuff to take ideas from it since The oracle games and A link to the past share the same mechanics of moving through different versions of the same map.

In a semi related note, I came up with a theory or better yet an educated guess. So looking at the beta sprites you can see a lot of out of place futuristic looking enemies and tiles. What if in an earlier build the light world/dark world mechanic was more like traveling between the past and future? With thing you did in the past affecting the future the same way you doing certain thing in the light world affect locations in the dark world.

That would explain the name of the game, A link to the Past doesn't make any sense as the tittle of the game but if you add time travel suddenly has it.

Tezuka: That was 1991. At that time I asked to begin official development of a Zelda game for the Game Boy. That’s when we were able to get one more development kit.
Iwata: That is a very cute story. (laughs) So you officially asked for a new project to begin development on, and the number of development kits increased from one to two.
Nakago: (laughs)
Iwata: Those were the good old days of nice, compact projects.
Tezuka: But at the time, we still had the idea of simply transplanting A Link to the Past to the Game Boy…

and right before that

Tezuka: Right. We weren't particularly planning to make a Zelda game for Game Boy, but we thought we'd try it out to see how it will work. So at first there was no official project. We'd do our regular work during normal work hours, and then work on it sort of like an afterschool club activity.

Iwata: Like an afterschool club?

Nakago: That's exactly what it was like! (laughs)

Iwata: That would be unthinkable now.

"Tezuka: We definitely couldn't do it now. Then, as we were doing that, even though it was only monochrome, we noticed it was beginning to look impressive. It was our first time to develop for the Game Boy system, and it was pretty fun."

Clearly they had no idea of what the new game would be (or if it would even turn into a full game) so they just began remaking ALttP.

It was never a serious concept.

It's a little murkier than that, I believe there is truth to them keeping ideas in the rolodex to be used at a later date, but I'm skeptical about how 'robust' of a phenomena this ends up being. By not mentioning any specifics, they can more or less say they do carry concepts forward like that, without being accused of lying. I'd also think that, when it does happen, it's likely the work of an individual rather than design team itself harkening back to that unused element. You have to remember that Nintendo markets themselves on their 'uniqueness' from the other two consoles, at this point, and has for at least 3 generations now. This sort of thing is part and parcel to the kind of PR they'd be going for.

The 'if it was major we would've heard about it by now' is a rather foolhardy stance to take for a large release this new that has not been combed well yet.

A lot of the data is in atypical formats that don't fit the usual tools people reverse engineering the games from their finished products use, so a lot of it can sit idle if no one takes interest, makes a tool to view it or finds an existing one.

Like 80% of the lttp content for example has not been posted anywhere and the only way to see it is to go in and look for it yourself. Did you know there was a beholder as an enemy in lttp at one point (chivilink.cgx)? No? Because you didn't go in and find it. what do you mean by "casual setting/forum"? Do you expect them to just give their ideas away if they could reuse them?
I mean for example they talked about how alttp was initially supposed to also have a futuristic setting but them talking about it pretty much means they completely gave up on the idea of having something like that, probably ever. Case in point even the most recent games only have fantasy magitech but never the same kind of futuristic 90s cyberpunk stuff they were planning for alttp. Another example is them talking about botw development and saying how they initially planned for the game to have actual ufos or Link riding a bike (which they eventually ended up using in the dlcs, but again in a fantasy magitech form) or an electric guitar or something like that. This is just stuff they feel confident to talk about, but like any other company what they feel is more valuable is to be kept under wraps

That's not what I said, I said that the idea goes part and parcel with the series enough that it suggests the idea that the concept was not unique to ALttP, even if the essential visual elements were there, the tree we're talking about here could have completely different purposes as far as gameplay and advancing the plot. Now, I'm going to state that again so you can't pretend to misunderstand me again. The image of a tree with a face is borrowed wholesale, it's not like they took a folkloric idea of a rock with a face and extrapolated that into a tree for ALttP. With all the talk about the "Deku Tree" and other unused tiles in ALttP, I'd like to remind everyone of this interview: https://www.glitterberri.com/developer-interviews/miyamoto-horii-discussion/
>Shigeru Miyamoto goes on a weird tangent implying that Shigesato Itoi originally wrote the story scenario for ALttP.
>Also mentions some gameplay ideas that he'd have liked to have included, which sounds suspiciously similar to the main party later in Secret of Mana.
>Interview was in 1989; ALttP (and SFC?) was virtually complete but the factory wouldn't accept it for production yet, meaning it was probably going to be a launch title.
>Final ALttP released in Japan in 1991, a year after the Super Famicom launch - Itoi is not mentioned at all in the credits, not even as special thanks.
Did Miyamoto decide to completely axe Itoi's ideas from the game when it was near-final, necessitating a minor revamp? Was the "Deku Tree" part of Itoi's plan?

So, Navi was to be present in Zelda 3, got into Ocarina. Deku Tree was to be in Zelda 3, got to Ocarina.
Most of the times it seems that Nintendo have huge ideas too much complex for the current gen, and they store it to use it in the next one, or even in the same console. Ocarina was to have a full day/night cycle that was implemented in Majoras, afterall.

I'm only partly through this interview, but this gave me pause:
>Like the characters in action games that don’t engage enemies in combat but rather go and scout out the surroundings and return to you safely. It’s also fun when an action adventure game lets you choose who to send out. That’s the sort of thing I’m thinking I’d like to put in Zelda 3.
Does anyone else experience a sense of... I don't know, sadness and longing for a simpler time when they read old Shigeru Miyamoto interviews? Look at him talk about gameplay elements in such simple, innocent terms. He didn't call it a 'mechanic' or suggest that there would be some unique, innovative control scheme linked with sending your partner out. No, he just flat out said "I think it's fun when games do this". This isn't Shigeru Miyamoto the artist who feels he has to do something no one's ever seen before, this is the Shigeru Miyamoto who made Super Mario Bros. 3, the Miyamoto who isn't afraid to try ideas that other companies may have already done so long as he thinks it will be cool and add to the fun of the game.

If anyone cares about the ISX files in these leaks I put together a C++ converter for them which should support all format/record types they use (some that would crash other converters/SameBoy/etc), only tested with GB files so far but maybe it'd work with SNES ones too.

Can also combine multiple ISX files into a single ROM, since I noticed some scripts in the leaks would load more than 1 ISX into the devkit at once (hopefully this can help with games like LA where the ISX doesn't contain all the banks, maybe you can islink/islk the missing banks into another ISX and use this with them)

Like isxman it'll also print bank sizes / warn if any are oversized / etc, and also warn if any binary data overlaps with already written data.
Can also read from the encrypted source file section and tell you any source file paths embedded inside the ISX (not included in all ISX files though sadly)

Source + win32 build: https://anonymousfiles.io/j1c3eKan/

Only a few games are connected properly. And that's fine. A game series doesn't need a never ending story.

The whole idea of link being defeated is dumb. You literally defeat ganon in oot. he's gone for now. he comes back in different games and then the cycle continues. Name one game where when you get to ganon, you fucking straight up die and then the end credits come up.

You don't kill Ganon, you seal him in the Sacred Realm. The game makes this very clear, it's a game for children after all.

Link gets sent back in time and changes the events of the past with his knowledge of Ganon's plot. Also clear.

It's as dumb as any "what if" story. I agree it wasn't apparent, hence why I said to you
>It's the only thing about the timeline that is an afterthought

Aside from the "what if Link died lol" branch, it was almost entirely based upon interviews they gave in the past and in-game events.

He has one piece of it, which he should have, since Link has his own piece in OoT's ending when he walks up to Zelda.

Im like 90% sure it was.

LBW is my most played game, also been datamined to shit. The original idea for LBW was to have a story set in the dark world, it was going to tell the story of LttP but a lil different.

Over time they didn't like the idea of completely changing the story of LttP so they scrapped that idea. Over time they kept going back to that concept to the point they scrapped a 3d remake of LttP inorder to make a brand new game.

A lot of concepts of the original plan made it into the game. You spend way more time in a dark world like realm, Lorule.

Oof that's a hot take and a half.

It's a good zelda but not the best. It has very underwhelming bosses, tedious weapon durability, and over priced dlc.

The concept is there for an amazing zelda game but it was stuck with too many flaws.

It's ok to think you're right in your own world. No one is arguing with you on that, but when you walk into the real world, it's widely seen as just a really good zelda.

No zelda is the best, we have definite worsts but not a best.

A best zelda would have to appeal to everyone. Have a difficulty setting, no paid dlc, multiple ways to play, interesting bosses, and a few more features would help it definitely.

The reason why OoT is seen as one of the best games in the series is because it has a huge world and story to explore, interesting boss fights, and compelling puzzles.

The thing that holds OoT back is the god damn water temple.

It's ok to have your own opinion about what zelda is the best to you. but just remember your opinion is shit and you should feel bad about having it

It's ok. It had interesting ideas but also took away things people really liked about the games. The bosses were very meh, and while shrines were creative they didn't really add to the story other than "do this to get more hearts or stamina" It had great characters and new enemies were cool, and exploring the open world is fun, but it doesn't feel like other Zeldas because of how little story there is.

>>6681402
I almost think everyone's favorite "best" zelda is the first one they play. OoT is fine, but I wouldn't call it the best. Link to the Past would be that for me, and my 2nd would be Wind Waker because of how much you can do in it. (I also really like Hyrule Warriors, but not as a Zelda game, just as a DW game)

Worst would be any of the ones requiring multiple people to play well, since the AI is always lacking when you play alone. After that Skyward Sword because of the motion controls. Which sucks since the story is good.
(I don't count the cdi games and no one should.)

Speaking of BS Zelda, I'm trying to figure out what's the correct palette for the sprites in ZLDOBJ.CGX
Some people are making the argument that Nintendo wanted to change Zelda's hair back to brown like in the NES original, instead of blonde like in the broadcasted game but I have yet to see this spritesheet without some things evidently colored wrong (like the green magical rod, ocarina and rupee).
Can anybody tell me how to correctly load the .col files so I can check?

I strongly suspect LA is originally planned as another game,as there are code for some items that got commented out in its code. For example, originally the Magic Rod is not infinite ammo. the Rod's code is based on the sword code and bow code, but the code limiting the number of magic balls on screen and its ammo is commented out. Search PWPC90 in zpl.dmg to see the remnant s(removed in DX version zpl.s).
Rod's ammo is macro RODCT, with corresponding routine in symbol RODTST and RODPWBUY. The shop routine contains an unused item called ロッドの素 (Element of Rod).

btw It's susipicious that the L-2 sword beam (referenced as macro KENBM)object is the last in the object list.

It seems to have something to do with mapping out standard tile arangements for the system's VRAM. Sort of a tileset template. Like I think there's an atari-dan.CGX file (something like that anyway, I'd have to check the exact name) and I think it was used to make sure graphics for common dungeon elements (I believe "dan" is short for dungeon/"danjyan" or however it would be pronounced in japanese) like doors would end up mapped to the same area in VRAM across tilesets.
