You have to download the cheat zip for mame and put it into either the Retroarch>system folder or the same folder as the mame.ini
Putting it in the cheats>Mame folder doesn't work (for me at least)
go into the Retroarch options and enable cheats.
Then with the game running in mame, hit tab to open Mame's own menu. Go to cheats and active auto fire (among other things)

If you're getting the roms one at a time it sometimes not enough to download ButtBlasters_(U).zip. Sometimes that game needs the other regions and the "parent" rom as well.
Just get a full merged set. It'll have a billion games you;ll never play but the ease of use is worth it.

Yeah there are plenty of easier, 'relaxing' shmups to play. Batsugun Special and 19XX come across as more casual, easier games (though they aren't kirby-easy).

For non-retro, I'd recommend checking out Sisters Royale, Dezatopia (or the dev's other game Mecha Ritz), or Neko Navy for something colorful, easier, and less 'stressful' that your typical arcade shooter.

iirc at max level the laser will be a screen-covering lightning attack with tendrils flying everywhere until about level 3 or so, in which it will peter out into a small beam until depleted. Holding the laser button will concentrate it back into a beam as opposed to a screen-wide attack.

If you activate the laser at less than max, it will be a large beam that depletes over time. As the other anon mentions, your power goes along with it so you want some Newalone handy after you activate it.

Beam Battles, you either have to mash the shot or beam button, I can't remember (I usually mash both), but you are at a disadvantage if your beam level is lower than the boss's. These usually aren't worth the power-down though.

How far have you gotten in Metal Black? I like the game quite a bit.

it's a lot of fun with some great levels/bosses and a wild atmosphere.

It's tricky, but as you play you'll need to remember when to shoot off a beam at max (with the screen clearing lightning) - and have spare energy to grab afterwards to get back up to speed.

For example, a commonly agreed-upon spot to use a full beam is at the end of stage 2 when all of those annoying enemies swarm from the front and behind. Wait until the moon is about 1/3 covering the screen to shoot off the lightning and you won't have to worry about the storm of enemies.

Another spot I like to use a full beam is right before the end of stage 3, where you ascend the space junk, since you have those scores of annoying little enemies peppering you from front and behind. I can get through sometimes ok, but usually I decide it's not worth the effort to dodge and just use a beam there.

Used to love BatRider but all the secret bosses is just a bit too much for me, and a straight-up shitclear that skips all them is too easy.

Garegga is good, but has some shitty pacing at times, Cloud in particular drags on too long. I don't like having to fight Black Heart, Nose Lavaughin and Madball again either.

Bakraid has perfect level designs and some of the most fun patterns to dodge of the 3. Just a shame it has a bad reputation because of its rather retarded scoring mechanics.

It has some great moments and I think it's at least worth credit feeding to see the different endings. Working to unlock different ships can be an enjoyable task in and of itself, but some of the requirements will make you roll your eyes. Unlocking ships in general though is a highly rewarding activity, and the amount of extraneous fluff text and lore do their job to draw you into the game.

Some of the stages are a little too slow (with slowdown, too) and some checkpoints are spaced out way too far (looking at you Gomander fight), but the game has some truly great moments in it. I am really hoping R-Type Final2 exceeds the first game in every way.

A 1all of Batsugun Special shouldn't be too bad, unless you are just starting out in the genre.

Depending on your skill level, I'd say try these:

Wing Force (unfinished game but both loops are fully playable; may need a special mame to run it - google wingforce mame)
Sorcer Striker - Western release of Mahou Daisakusen with a rather reduced difficulty. This actually makes the game quite approachable to newcomers vs. its Japanese counterpart with its many sheer brick walls of difficulty.
Sengoku Ace - is tough, but if you are willing to put in some save state practice and learn pattern safe-spots, you can probably make quick progress.

Of these I'd say try Sorcer Striker or Sengoku Ace (but SS is easier).

I'll try out Sorcer Striker since I got it on PS4 and had fun playing it. I also tried out DDP's second loop for fun earlier and got owned pretty hard. I challenged my self to just route 2-2 without dieing and bombing and got a pretty consistent route down in a few hours. Not sure if I am skilled enough for the rest of the loop though.

For DG specifically, your missiles actually do a huge about of damage. Part of effectively fighting bosses is knowing when to get up close and shoot them point-blank with missiles; it will really make their health go down. Missiles have always been the somewhat semi-hidden secret of Darius offense - new players tend to ignore them because they just fall out of your ship in front of you. When you bomb, get up close and point-blank to make the most of your invul.
