Start out modest. Pick a system you like, and start small from there. For instance, you might want all the mario nes games, so focus on that, while youre looking for what you want, maybe youll catch something unexpected. I collect to play, so I dont have a huge youtube worthy collection, but I have enough to keep me occupied.
Dont hoover up everything, leave something for the rest of us. I like to think that someone is looking for something ive seen, ive never sold on so I cant help you with pricework, but I would advise you to keep an up to date inventory of things you have, that way, you can feel what you need to get by way of gaps in your collection.
You can pick everdrives up for popular systems reasonably cheap, so get hold of a rom set, play thru it and see what you think is worth parting cash for.

Dont forget, to get the most out of your system, you will need a crt. Dont spend money on them! Plenty can be found on the roadside or in charity shops. Dont bother with the pvm meme, most crts are pretty much the same in terms of quality, take a look at the back of it, if youre in PAL you want to find a 50/60hz tv to take advantage of 60hz games. Many dreamcast and ps2 games have a 60hz option and some gamecube games work exclusively in 60hz (the zelda games and remasters, I think the metroid games too).
I know 6 gen aint retro, but its good to know anyway, dont stunt your growth. Try and pick up some 'bundles' preferably tested, if buying in person, get the seller to hook the shit up first. Hold the pads, jerk the wires.
Dont be impatient, act in haste, repent at leisure. If a deal is too good to be true... well thats a risk you will have to take.
When buying carts, look at the pins, if they are corroded, dont buy. Sometimes that corrosion can be a massive fault, sometimes stemming from the chip. I have a drawer full of dud carts. You can use them as props, but you dont want to collect 'plastic garbage'.

>> No.6673945

And most importantly (especially with bigger purchases) do a bit of research. Most defunct consoles have a small homebrew scene. I like my vectrex because there are new releases all the time, albeit not the most sophisticated, but its worth that initial investment. But dont buy a 500 quid paperweight. For instance, dont buy a virtual boy if you just want to play a game you saw civvie review. You will play and regret. Emulate first, and if you can see yourself getting a few hundred hours out of it, go ahead. Otherwise, emulate or watch youtube.
Theres no shame in getting a 'flashback' console, but do your research. If you cant hack the system on a certain model, dont buy if adding more titles to it is not an option. If you just want to play the in builts only, then go ahead. The nes never really gained much tractionn in uk, but I have a cutesy famiclone (coolbaby rs-36 or something, looks like the nip famicom, looks good, has 400 games built in) and that scratches my itch for that system.
Ps3 is good entry point for ps1, as it can hook up to hdmi no problem and play ps1 games (all systems) and comes with in built memory cards, further reducing cost. Ps2 is only inferior by way of ps2 memory cards being incompatible with ps1 saves. You can just buy a ps1 memory card and it will work fine.
I would avoid a ps1 for the abovementioned reasons.
Now, if you like light gun games (who doesnt?) A crt and a guncon will be a good investment. Guncon 2 is backwards compatible, and will fit all ps2 systems, fat and slim. 3rd party lightguns (esp for ps1) usually dont have form for slim ps2.... (Cont)

>> No.6673969

First thing to do is get a fat tv, or it will be extremely difficult to set retro console up.

...because passthrough is usually massive.
Good controllers will drastically improve gameplay. Spare no expense. Buy cheap ones for player 2 but have at least one quality one for yourself.
Collecting is fun in and of itself. In the uk its good to find a big metro area to check local franchises out. Make a day of it. Theres a massive CEX in leeds, wakefield has 2 Cex and pawn shops.
Cex is good, you can buy online and prices are usually competitive.
Cash gen/converters are okay. They tend to be overpriced with limited stock and usually in pretty bad shape.
Charity shops are the same.
Local independents can usually be good, if pricey. Manchester has a couple big ones (afflecks, ashton retro rewind, music for soul in eccles) and a fair few CEX in each metro borough.
Music-magpie.com sometimes has really good bargains. For some reason, a brand new copy of fifa will be 50 quid but rule of rose was 7 quid once (I passed, I dont like survival horror games, some neeto probably bought it and lived like a king for a week or two after resale).
Its a revolving door. Sometimes youll get the same shit week in week out. Sometimes, you will get a 'hidden gem' or two. Keep checking. If you see something youre not sure of, in my experience, its best to pick it up if you think it will be a good game.I know this because ive missed out after sleeping on it.
Most importantly, have fun. Dont buy shit youre not gonna play (unless you want all the fifa games, I like them and theyre usually 10pence each). I think thats everything. If you need to know anything, were not all toxic nerds. We like to see the hobby grow. Just dont buy shit and resell. Its a killer.

Ps1 is dirt cheap with plenty of decent shovelware.
Sms is cheap. Pretty sure a megadrive and mega games 1-6 can be had v cheap. Megagames 6 was a late life pack in and has shinobi, sonic &c dirt cheap.
Its only nintendo systems which tend to be pricey but thats prestige inflation. Carts still tend to be cheaper than flash and the flashback system brought prices down.
Its the obscure systems that tend to be expensive, but theres a reason theyre rare and thats coz they dont sell, partly because of weak library, fail rate, so on.
Ps2 is cheap (not retro, idc) and you can pick one up easily. Games a ten a penny. Just check if it plays both type of discs, blue and silver (cd and dvd respectively). Xbox is cheap because online is dead.
Depend on your area too.

Echoing the everdrive meme, you'll have all the games on one cartridge and won't be bothered with swapping them out when you want to play something else. You can also play hacks and mods on real hardware this way, which is pretty neat if you can be bothered to sift through the trash to find well made non-kaizo shit.

Recently during covid I've dug out my old consoles and picked up a couple new ones. I wouldn't say I'm really a collector since I only have like 40 games but I've started fleshing out my library at the local retro game store.
I also do a fair amount of garage sailing/ebay reselling just as a hobby so it ties in pretty well to that since I've found some decent stuff at sales.

I've got
An NES classic
A SNES classic
A "region unlocked" ocean blue N64 running through a retrotink (I paid up for the retrotink for the S-Video and in case I pick up a real SNES or NES, or something like a PS1)
A DOL-001 gamecube with an EON GCHD adapter (too expensive but the gamecube is my favorite console)
A WiiU, don't have a Wii but obviously the WiiU plays all the games natively.
A Switch.

So basically I have four legacy consoles I'm trying to build out the libraries of. I'd pick up an SNES or NES at a garage sale if I saw either of those for cheap, but I hear the pins wear out all the time on them, especially the NES, and the classic editions have pretty much everything I'd want to play. WiiU stuff I'm basically done with since I wouldn't pick up anything that has a superior port on the switch, and Wii games are dirt cheap so thats easy. Any hidden gems for the GC or N64? I'd like to pick up an everdrive 64 x7 but theyre hundreds of dollars right now since they've been out of print for a while, so for the price of an Everdrive I could realistically pick up the rest of the games I'm looking for just on their own since it seems like most N64 carts aren't pricey, especially compared to a lot of the GC titles these days.
Also, anyone have any experience with the Brawler64 controllers? They're pretty cheap and it might be a good main controller to use without wearing out my real ones.
thanks for reading my blog

really depends on what the types of games are and if you want to display them or not
I just have mind on an Ikea bookshelf since it looks pretty clean and doesnt take up much space. If you want to keep the games hidden/out of the light there are a ton of DVD storage options that will work fine with any disc based media.
If you have cartridges most people just get spine labels off ebay and stack them on the shelf but you can also get like, old disney movie type clamshell cases for a lot of cartridge games, but its gonna be like 6-10 dollars per case. Not for me, but does make things easier to store on sliding DVD shelves

Find a kink and fuck it. What do you like? What's your favorite game? Do you want to geek out on a single series like Mario or Zelda, and get everything from comics to tshirts to games to rare consoles like CD-i?

Or do you like a specific era? A specific company? A designer? A genre? Pick whatever it is that you like the most and focus on it. Watch videos, read histories, learn about that kink.

Then, figure out what your white whales are. Is it the CD-i Zelda games? Is it just a NES copy of SMB? You choose because its your collection. You can collect KFC wrappers if you want, who gives a shit. Just collect something that's meaningful to you. Identify your top priority items and learn about them.

Then, go to thrift stores, garage sales and flea markets. These are the gold mines. The less the seller knows about games, the better for you. Not because you can rip them off, but because they will sell you something cheap on their own terms. You don't have to bargain someone down if they want like $100 for a working NES and a working CRT and a buncha games, right? Avoid flea market booths that are nothing but videogames. Your greatest finds will be in the "Wild." At thrifts, garage sales, estate sales, anywhere a person is selling you the stuff outside under a tent for cash.

If you want to ebay and actually identify and just buy a collection, fine, but you don't need instructions to do that. Buy what you want, it's all out there.

But the real fun of collecting is the hunt. The hunt is everything. The hunt is life.
