Replaying TR1 after what seems to be 19 years... Can't wait to play through the entire classic franchise.
What's your favorite? What about least favorite?

I loved TR3. I used the "all weapons" cheat in TR2 the very first time playing it, and it really spoiled the experience. In TR3, I let Lara discover things as I went, which added so much to the experience.

I'm doing the same OP, I just finished India in 3, I love exploring every nook and cranny in these.

I'd say my favorite is either 2 or 3. I'm leaning more towards 2 because that's the one I had in PS1 and played over and over, but 3 is overall better in my opinion.

Currently playing TR3 for the first time on an emulator. Man, this game can get pretty tricky at times but it's been quite fun! My favorite, at least for now, is TR2. Certainly, I've yet to play the first one, Chronicles and 3 (or finish it, more like) so maybe that'll change, or not. I don't know, there's just something about 2 that feels special. Maybe it's because it's the first Tomb Raider I've ever played and completed.
>>6676927
The classic Tomb Raider games are quite unique. There really isn't anything quite like them. The feeling of being dropped into these mysterious and, at times, mystical and uncharted (but always hostile) territories and being left to your own devices to slowly work your way around them is just something else. Of course, the games can be kind of cryptic and confusing at times, so they will often test your patience, but when you finally manage to figure out where you're supposed to go and how you're supposed to do it, it's just so satisfying. Another thing worth mentioning is the general atmosphere of the games, which is top notch. As outdated as the games may be visually, the environments, together with the music and the sounds, do a great job of immersing you and putting you into the shoes of this reckless adventurer who goes into all sorts of dangerous places to acquire all kinds of relics to add to her collection just for fun and who happens to save the world from some unspeakable evil as a consequence. The only thing that might make it hard to get into these games are the controls, as you may find them to be terribly outdated, but that's just a matter of playing and getting accustomed to them. In my opinion, they still hold up really well and work just fine in the context of what the game requires you to do. Definitely do give them another chance if you think that they could be something you might enjoy. Like I said earlier, there really isn't anything quite like them nowadays.

It's completely different. Tomb Raider is an exploration and puzzle game. There's some combat, but it's always over quickly and the main game focus is poking around the environment and trying to navigate it. There's a lot of finding a locked door and then looking around and finding the key or a lever that opens a passage that leads to the key etc. Puzzles are environmental so watching the timing on lighting bolts or deciding which rocks to move to make a new path etc. That's really the game, explore a big dungeon and work out how to make it to the other end.

Uncharted to me is like Crash Bandicoot with cutscenes and nominal "puzzles". There's really no exploration, ever. You're on a tight path that looks really pretty but is super shallow. After going along and doing the QTE segments and action set pieces you'll then get to a "puzzle" which is not only super obvious if you've ever played adventure games, but then Drake will pull out a notebook and solve it for you.

Uncharted and Tomb Raider have similar themes, but gameplay wise Uncharted is closer to Crash or Dragon's Lair than Tomb Raider by far.

You get used to the controls eventually. The level design is built around the controls being the way that they are. If a mod changed the controls to be closer to Uncharted or some shit, some parts would be impossible. While the controls feel "clunky," they actually provide more precision and predictability once you master them. Still not ideal for combat sequences, though.

I played through Tom Raider Legend recently. It was a fun game. The controls are much more "modern" than the original games with the "tank" controls.

The other day I started up Tomb Raider 1 for the first time. I expected it to feel like a clunky piece of shit compared to the newer stuff. But, to my surprise, I actually am enjoying TR1 much more than TRL.

Since I started TR1 the other day, I have been doing my best to squeeze in a bit of playtime each day and I look forward to my next session. Never felt that way about TRL.

TRL can't touch TR1 when it comes to atmosphere and exploration. The only thing TRL does better is combat. Fortunately, it doesn't seem like combat is a major focus in TR1 anyway.

Unlike games like Uncharted, where you can hop around like a fucking monkey when you're in trouble, you need to be a lot more strategic in TR1. You can't just barge into a room or you might end up watching Lara get mauled by a pack of gorillas like a fucking blacked porno.

That's another thing--anyone else genuinely feel bad when they see Lara die? It's weird, other games never have that effect, but for some reason I hate to see Lara die. No idea why that is.

I don't particularly feel bad whenever I see Lara die but I can sort of understand what you mean. She can die in some very gruesome ways and some of these deaths can happen very quickly, due to a very simple mistake. It's like it reminds you that Lara, despite being almost superhuman, is always putting herself in some very dangerous situations and that she is nothing more than a fragile bag of flesh and bones at the end of the day.

>> No.6692878

>>6692323
yeah, I think also the atmospheric nature of the game makes the death sequences more impactful. Because the game is so atmospheric, it becomes very immersive, even though the graphics are primitive and unconvincing by today's standards, and that immersiveness makes the deaths feel more "real."

>> No.6693213

>>6692878
Oh yeah, it's very immersive. That's perhaps one of my favorite things about these games and it's something that really surprises me even to this day, taking into consideration just how primitive the graphics are, as you mentioned. One of the biggest contributors to the game's atmosphere and its sense of immersion, in my opinion, is how minimalistic and unobtrusive the UI is and that minimalistic approach is also adopted in Lara's deaths, which is perhaps why they can be so impactful and "real". Like, for example, Lara falls from a very high place, you hear her scream, you hear a gut-wrenching sound as her body hits the floor, and she just fucking dies. No cinematic camera, no fade to black, no game over screen, no game over music, nothing. All you get is her lifeless body lying there with all her limbs bent backwards. And you can just watch it for a little bit, while the world around her just keeps on moving as if nothing had happened. It makes you think about how even this character that seemed so capable and so strong can die like a dog in an instant after one wrong move, which is in stark contrast to the power fantasy the game goes for. It can be pretty effective and I can't think of many games that do this kind of thing.

>> No.6693424

>>6693213
all solid points, I agree completely. The minimalist UI was something I noticed right away (you only see the lifebar when it's immediately relevant) but the other minor details you mentioned also add to the immersion as well
>No cinematic camera, no fade to black, no game over screen, no game over music, nothing.
>All you get is her lifeless body lying there with all her limbs bent backwards.
>you can just watch it for a little bit, while the world around her just keeps on moving as if nothing had happened
Those little details add up, I think, in making the deaths feel more "real" while also emphasizing Lara's isolation--she is all alone in some cavern somewhere bleeding to death and not only does the world go on like nothing happened, nobody even knows that she is dying. Lara's powerlessness heightens the critical nature of the situation she is in, which also adds to the immersion.

I wonder how many of these details were deliberate on the part of the designers and how many were happy accidents. The fact that they pulled this off back in '96 is pretty amazing considering that there was very little precedent at the time--not only did they pull off a 3D exploration/adventure/puzzle game almost 25 years ago, but they did it extremely well.

Is it another of those instances where TR3 is horrible on PS or something like that? Always played it on PC, always was fantastic, never had any problems with controls or anything like that.

After having grown up with the originals and still play them occasionally, I finally got the chance to play The Lost Artifact for the first time recently and absolutely laughed at the implication that Nessie was a robot the whole time and Lara just killed it's pilot (though after the ending of 3, I think she just has a thing against pilots)

Why do you assume that I want to make a game? I'm one of the tiny minority who like the control scheme, I find it well suited to the gameplay, and I'm just wondering to myself if there is a chance any more similar games will ever be created.

Though, now that I think about it... If I did want to make a game similar to the original TR games, I would make the protagonist similar to Lara but way over the top sexualized--super slutty outfit and all of her "grunts" would be extremely sexual. She would have one liners like Gex, but they would all be sexual innuendos. I think it could be pretty dope desu. someone put together a demo and I'll contribute to your kickstarter

I mean a game specifically with the "tank" controls

That seems to be the biggest gripe people have with the classic TR games. I might be the only person who actually prefers the tank controls--more specifically, I prefer the gameplay built around the tank controls.

I don't really think it's lack of patience. It takes literally five minutes to get used to the controls. What it really is is people (a) not giving a fuck and (b) not bothering with Croft manor, so they end up genuinely confused why the mouse doesn't work and how to even move around, so they leave and throw a tantrum in the net about "muh tank controls"

>It takes literally five minutes to get used to the controls
I think it takes quite a bit longer than that if you are used to games like Uncharted. You can get the basic mechanics down in a few minutes, but the control scheme has some critical details that take a while to get used to. How the "grid" system works especially feels very foreign if you're used to more typical platformer controls.

The issue might be that people expect to go into the game and find controls that are similar to what they already know--some slight variation on the typical 3D platformer control scheme. This is a fine approach with almost every other game. But, with the original TR games, you need to be willing to toss aside your expectations and be open to exploring an entirely different way of controlling the character.

And yes, the tutorial level does a good job of showing you how the controls work.

Going through the whole Core games on console. About to finish 2, not gonna say it was a breeze but I didn't struggle a whole lot. Granted, the save anywhere helps a lot.

TR3 doesn't strictly have "bad" level design. It's just that it's quite different from 1 and 2. The levels are less linear and more open ended. As a consequence, you may end up doing things out of order, which will inevitably force you to backtrack a lot more than in the previous entries. It can also be a lot more subtle as to how you're supposed to navigate certain areas, with what objects you're supposed to interact in order to proceed or telegraphing things that can potentially kill you. In this regard, it can be quite fucking bullshit and punishing. You will most likely die a lot, and often to things that you would have almost no way of avoiding if you didn't know about beforehand or if you weren't very observant. That being said, saving won't be that big of an issue. You'll just have to be a little bit more reserved and patient.

Aside from turbo bazoongas, she's cool, skilled and has some good banter throughout the games. One of the more amusing SJW revisionism regarding videogames is how much they overlook Lara's traits because they'd have no argument otherwise.
