Let's have another thread because I want to ask a question:

If we ever get a hypothetical Shining Force 4, do you want them to retain the weapon triangle system that was used in SF3 or do you want to return to SF1 and SF2's simpler system?

Also I still don't get the relationship/difference between Elbesem and the Creator. Are they the one and the same? Is Elbesem not even their God but just the name of that silly Holy Land?

And yes, they should try and finish up that Galm-Innovator plotline if they ever make SF4.

>> No.6669219

If they ever release a SF4 I'm fine with pretty much anything they do about the triangle system or not. But its so impossible that is painful to just talk about it. Sega already killed the franchise and turned into a generic action rpg focused in waifu "social links" like persona is now.

Why is Camelot content with just being a Mario Sports dev nowadays? They've done nothing RPG since Golden Sun. Hot Shots Golf on the PS1 really was their turning point away from being an RPG dev.

Is it really a contract though? Like a 7 year "make us this many such-and-such sport titles" contract? Or is it just a case of them being comfortable with the sports gig and wanting to make more since it's good, honest money?

Camelot brothers have tied up their relationship with SEGA recently. Even wishing SEGA to communicate with them more often.

They even left a birthday message for them on SEGA's 60th Anniversary website. There should be no heat between them at all.

Yeah, on both sides I should think. I think even the producer for the Shining series who threw a fit over the SOS (shiningforcecentral) campaign back in 2013 or so is no longer in charge of the series. So, *theoretically*, no one at SEGA should have any vendetta against Camelot of the Takahashi bros. The only big problem now is that SEGA is often reluctant to suddenly bring back old franchises as a publisher. I remember reading that the Sakura Wars revival was long due, like people in SEGA kept pitching ideas for a revival year after year, and it was only after that one big fan poll that SEGA finally decided "sure, bring it back".

But that's for their "officially published" franchises. I think SEGA's a bit more lenient for franchises where they license out the IP to some other dev and publisher. That's what happened with Streets of Rage 4 and Alex Kidd Remake. Perhaps SEGA might be more willing to work with Camelot given this second option?

I remember posting this in a previous thread long ago, but my ideal solution is for SEGA to adopt a 2-way strategy for Shining titles in a possible SF4 timeline. It's similar to Sonic Mania + Sonic Forces. Basically announce two games, a classic and a modern game, to appeal to both crowds. Because even though nu-Shining is not that popular in the west, it has a following in Japan (such is the alluring power of Tony Taka elf-sluts). I won't even mind if "classic" SF4 gets a lower budget than whatever the next nu-SHining title is. I just want a continuation of those classic styles and classic storyline.

It's been a few years now but they have long expressed interesting in making a Shining Force 4: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/10/camelot_software_boss_is_keen_to_make_shining_force_iv_a_reality
Many developers are willing to make a proper new entry for many beloved Sega IPs; the problem is Sega would rather sit on them instead. Not to mention that while current Shining is just cheap 40hr ad commercial for Tony Taka's figures, they haven't even annouced/made a new game since Shining Resonance which first came out in 2014. We just don't know what Sega is doing right now, but I'm pretty sure Sega doesn't know either.
>>6669806
You mentioning the poll reminded me that Shining Force made the top 10 of series fans wanted to see revived iirc. But then again JSR was second place on that poll and we've still haven't heard anything about it since, only Sakura Wars. While I wouldn't be too opposed to Sega letting other devs work on their IPs (SOR4 was pretty fun/solid), I hope they wouldn't do that to Shining since Camelot has said they want to make a new one.
>>6669824
I would much rather that Tony Taka be still in charge of the designs but the actual gameplay/story be handled by Camelot or something. Tony design's aren't as charming as the older games to me (or even titles like EXA or Feather) but I'd be more ok with it as long as I could have the gameplay and story/world building I loved back.

Different anon; I've played a bit of the GBA version but never finished it. The GBA version, firstly, has ugly art direction. I simply do not like how it looks. I think it is unsightly. Secondly, and perhaps of even more importance, is that the GBA version was not developed by Camelot/Sonic Software Planning (the original devs). Various story additions in the GBA version lent to some contradictions and inconsistencies in the lore of the Camelot-era Shining timeline, which I do indeed care for very much. I think only one writer from the original also worked on the GBA remake, but bear in mind the original had like 4 separate writers (according to Wikipedia) which also include Camelot's founder Takahashi Hiroyuki. I think the lack of his involvement meant there was no thorough double-checking to make sure the lore was consistent. In an interview, Takahashi did mention he was particularly thorough in creating the world of Shining.

Why did SF3 have some very odd names that were basically English words? Like, see here: https://www.shiningforcecentral.com/?p=characters&id=sf3
Arrawnt was originally Arrogant, Domaric was Dominate, Tybalt was Tyranny, etc. I even double-checked with JP Wikipedia and it was correct. The weird thing is that this was mostly just for the Empire and Republic NPCs; most of your playable characters have normal names that remained unchanged in the localisation/fan-TL, e.g. Dantares, Masqurin.

SF3 is one of those very few games where I'm very glad the localisation/translation team took great liberty in changing character names from their originals. Because some of those names contains spoiler-like "hints"! Like how we Tybalt (Tyranny) eventually betrays the Republic.

There are various other forums and news site discussing & chronicling these events, you need only google them.

I wasn't actively involved in those events and remained just an outside observer of things as they happened, but based on my understanding, that Sawada guy is absolutely the guy who made this mess a whole lot worse. He's the one who made this whole thing become an "us vs them" issue. And then Futaba Channel (2chan) got involved and made this whole shitshow a whole lot worse. We've always known SEGA favoured their Japanese fans a lot, which is natural. I understand that; they are a Japanese company. But this situation really revealed how strong that bias was. I'd wager the whole SOS mess was what contributed to none of the post 2010 nu-Shining ever getting localised, up until Resonance Refrain. Sawada was probably butthurt and didn't want those "filthy gaijin trolls" getting their hands on the games. Bear in mind, this whole thing was huge. SEGA of America took notice, SEGA of Japan took notice, even Camelot was aware. And SFC wasn't just "some" fansite; it's the oldest Shining fansite and, at the time at least, the most active. I've no doubt that for some of the Japs, SFC represented the "Western Shining fans".

Good thing you asked though, I'm rather sure there are some anons here unaware about this whole thing. This whole thing is a good read/watch, because I am certain it played a role in the fate of the Shining series in the west during the early 2010s.

Such a damn shame, though. All those reviews, Let's Plays, discussions, etc. on YouTube pre-2012. Almost all of them gone. The few that remains are the ones where the channel managed to fight back and report back to YouTube that the copyright strikes were being misused. You will notice that a huge chunk of Shining Force vids available right now are 2012 onwards. This is the reason why. It's also why certain "Retro YouTubers" like HappyConsoleGamer etc. don't have any vids of the Shining series; they were removed back then. And they never bothered to re-upload after SEGA relaxed their copyright spree.

Okay, while I was typing up >>6674391 and >>6674406 and rereading some old forums to refresh my memory, I actually found new info I've not heard of before. Can't verify so it might be just rumours, but:
>He (Sawada) has not allowed Famitsu to show up the original games on that commemorative issue of Sega. He don't allow the release of the complete collection sound CD of the original series, and still thinking he is doing a great job.
[ pic related, from SEGAbits's forums http://segabits.com/forums/index.php?topic=2150.0 ]
If the above is true (a big if, that is), then this Sawada guy is even scummier than I thought. He is actively trying to lessen and make people forget about the legacy of classic Shining games. He despises the idea that the nu-Shining games he produced are worse than the classics. Absolute arrogance.

because its a tedious slog with only 3 characters that do shit for damage, especially when you're playing on a harder difficulty to make the rest of the game fun and challenging. i didnt say it was impossible or i couldnt do it. i just said it was annoying and more fun to get on with the rest of the game.

you people keep saying "pumping you full of exp like crazy". 10-20 for damage, and 24 for a kill is hardly "pumping like crazy". also most people familiar with shining force are used to diminishing numbers when they level up, so when the numbers start out so low to begin with, why would they expect them to stay constant?

Did you try Feather?
There's no translation unfortunately, but it's a TRPG at least and the combat is kinda nice, if not classic Shining Force.
I think that and the PSP games, or at least Blade, could've been great in gameplay if they had translated them, and probably messed with the story for Blade, since that seems to be about sword spirit waifus.
Feather is about airship waifus so it's clearly superior

But that aside, I'd definitely give Feather a try, I ended up enjoying the combat quite a bit. Just wish I'd understand any of it to actually comment on the story and world.

Blade at least is odd in that it would be my dream combination of a Valkyria Chronicles like combat system with the Shining world. Too bad it's new Shining.

There is a translation in text floating out there somewhere. I forgot where though it took some finding.
Some guy made youtube videos but they relied on captions that don't exist anymore on the videos and the only guide with I think a summary of the plot and stuff is in Spanish only.
To save you the hassle, this is what I found. I think it is the captions from the videos but in .txt format. I'm sorry they're all loose like that but I didn't think to make a zip until it was all up.

volafile dot org/r/1cnte2vgg

There is a patch to translate the menus a little bit, but that only helps so much.

If you find anything else tho, I'd love to see it, because I really do want to play through Feather properly one day.

I've always had this "standard" in my mind that a centaur's lower half, i.e. the horse bit, should have the same colour as the skin in his/her upper body, i.e. the human torso. That pic's contrast of Mae's light-skinned torso and her weird white legs is weirding me out.

>> No.6681207

>>6681181
That makes no sense given that her upper half is bare skin and the lower part is covered in fur. If anything it would be weird if the fur color was exactly the same as the skin. I could see wanting the hair on her head to match the coat on her horse parts but they already come in different colors.

In all seriousness, I think something about how it has that early 90s anime look but is somewhat infused with Disney-esque Don Bluth influences makes it very memorable and nice to look at. Clean linework, a conservative colour pallette that still manages to look colourful, character design that is noticeably less busy and simple. Compare it to other early 90s JRPG franchises; Dragon Quest's Toriyama, FF's Yoshitaka Amano, etc. The style is very different.

I think even for it's time a lot of JRPG and "anime" style artwork could be enjoyed if you weren't really into them. I mean it certainly had that ANIME look to it but also in kind of a way that seemed like it was shooting for world appeal rather than something to cater directly to people who buy body pillows.
