>Publishers have 0 interest in anything that isn't COD
>Only one who gives a shit is the fans
>Can't use kickstarter for some random arbitrary reason
Where else are they suppose to raise the capital?

Not like kickstarter can ever generate a meaningful amount of funding anyways, though. Unless it's a world record top 10 kickstarter like Scam Citizen is. Veteran developers these days just uses it as a tool to get publisher interest. Pic related couldn't even get the small budget System Shock 1 had, less than half when you consider inflation, and probably a 1/3rd when you consider Kickstarter's cut and taxes. Not to mention it's exponentially more costly to make a modern game than it was to make on in 1994. For example, the level editor in SS1 was literally an MS paint clone, while a level in Unity is entirely hand modeled and full of 100 tiny little models and art assets.

The devs knew that though, which is why they only used the Kickstarter to get publisher interest. The publisher who then stabbed them in the back and pulled their funding. The fans were left dumbstruck and surprised a game that had a shoestring budget wasn't the next giant Deus Ex-sized immersive sim. The devs obviously did what they could to pull the game together, but ultimately had to cut their losses if they wanted to survive. Their next game was System Shock 3 and it was the same situation. ONCE AGAIN, they could not get any publisher interest despite making a ton of capital on kickstarter. Their kickstarter was slightly less pathetic this time, but still adds up to less than SS1's original budget factoring in the things I mentioned earlier. The fans then were somehow surprised that they ended up selling out to the Chinese.

This same shit happened with No Man's Sky, except Hello Games had a couple million on hand to finish up the game. If they weren't loaded then they would have to cut their losses to and move on. Keep in mind the only reason they got that money in the first place is because they sold out to Sony.

I honestly believe this shit is the #1 reason why modern games are trash. Publishers don't fund shit. It's entirely business connections and shit. In the past you would have a few small AA projects (System Shock 1/Ultima Underworld was this) on the side, while your big AAA front runner project (The Ultima Series itself) got the primary funding. Now there is no AA. It's just all in or indie.

No. Are gamers really that stupid to give their finances to a project that by no means has any obligation to complete a project?

Pretentious as shit. More accurate statement would be "How two brothers made the last gasps of graphical adventures before PC gaming was entirely overrun with FPS games".

I think people tend to forget why these companies came into existence to begin with. Blizzard was originally three guys using their programming skills to port other people's games to other platforms. Then they got lucky with The Lost Vikings and were able to finance a few flops(or possibly pocket some license fees from them), then they finally hit their stride with Warcraft. By the end of the 90's they were pumping out games like Starcraft and Diablo 2 and topping sales charts. You know the rest. EA started as a publisher in 83, and didn't have a successful game of their own until Skate or Die. They continued to publish other people's games then had success with Road Rash and Desert Storm. After that they started buying up other devs, and we all know how that went.

The big difference between then and now is numbers. Back then, after selling 1 million copies, Adventure Island got 3 sequels and some spin-offs. It wasn't a AAA title, it was a re-skin of an arcade game from another company that Hudson's president self-inserted into. Now, Sony is butthurt that AAA game #8 for this year only sold 3 millions. The reason it looks to be more AAA or indie despite still being the same as it was back then is because that gap between indie and AA/AAA is much larger now.

The tagline alone should tell anyone "nothing to see here" as if it gets made it'll be more interested in devs overblowing their one success and fanboys actually believing it rather than trying to be objective about it.

It's like those youtube "documentary" dev interviews where 90% of the devs are going to tell you they invented hot water expect if you actually think for yourself for a second you'll realize they didn't; but longer because they have an actual budget. I'm looking at you ars technica.

It's called capitalism and the feudal system more so than 'earth'. People simply don't know how to live without the system. It's not even people. People have existed for like 200k years. Capital was invented like 10k ago as far as anyone knows.

Stalin had far more kills than hitler and there were many more second world countries than Fascist ones, but why expect me to go sifting through literal ancient history for an autistic right winger? I have no reason to spoonfeed you the truth about human nature. Do you own research if you want to wake up. I could talk until I'm blue in the face and you'd never ever care what I told you.

Saying it's not true is like saying police exist for no reason. The knights were there to terrorize peasants into being foot soldiers in war so no elites died and also terrorizing them into paying taxes for the royalty.

Not knowing where we came from, tyranny evolving over time due tot it's cruel efficiency, is just idiotic. It's next level ignorance.

Any society with a police force, any society with land ownership, any society with money, they are all tyrannical. It's harder to ask which ones didn't have revolts, aka criminal activity, than the ones that did historically.

Literally everything is an example. If I go steal from walmart because I will never own a store due to it's overshadowing my ability to create a smaller store then that's a revolt right there. If a thief in the middle ages wasn't born into apprenticeship nor lordship then that's one too when he went and stole bread.

Idiot. It's all to do with nepotism. The passing down of education, capital, even the passing down of superior genetics to gatekeep IQs of which happens to this day.

The day crime is no more is the day peasants stopped revolting. There were always criminals.
