What's the deal with Ultima VII? Is it any good? I just got it for a buck fiddy, but I know very little about it. How's it work? I tried Ultima IV, but it was too clunky for me. I'm hoping this one is better.

Yes, anon. Ultima VII is a great game, its sequel(Serpent Isle) is also another great game. It's one of my favorite Ultima games. It also has this amazing ost: https://youtu.be/eErSFN8MBmk

Got any tips for wrapping my head around the controls? Moving around feels awful, and it took me five minutes to figure out how to pick up the damn key

>> No.6649286

Try playing Ultima IV with xu4. It simplifies the controls and speeds up the game.
I can't recommend playing VII without prior knowledge of the series.

Just for the story, or the controls, or what? It did seem like a direct sequel, given that the old dude seemed to know who I was immediately

For the story. Nothing is going to solve VII's shitty controls or gameplay.

It's sort of an open world kind of game like Elder Scrolls Oblivion. I started with 7: Black Gate and alongside Final Fantasy 2 (US/JP4easy) they got me really into the RPG genre. You got it for a lot cheaper than I did. In 7, they tried to make almost the whole game mostly controllable via the mouse only, but the shortcuts on keyboard definitely make the task easier. Right mouse button moves you, left mouse selects (show name of item/person) double left click opens/uses or engage conversation. You can also left drag and drop items to move/place them. I have not played 4 nor any other Ultima aside from the ones pictured here, but I really like what I have played.

That sounds so off to me. Back then I used a plain Sound Blaster (I think 2.0), for the game and that is how I remember it, but as I have learned on this board, no one likes Yamaha sounds so just to me the the music is better that way. I guess everyone else is more used to Roland sounds, and that's probably how the rich and young experienced it, but when you're poor you settle for things like Yamaha sounds and AMD parts like I did. Installing the Forge of Virtue added a new event/area to t he game and it was cool, while I found 7 part 2: Serpent Isle way more restrictive and linear, and more buggy, it was still pretty good. Part 2 did lack the large party and there were so many ways I could have imagined it to be more open, but it was a step up in visuals as I thought Fawn was a very pretty city and the inventory screens had the characters actually wear the items.

I believe you are referring to Iolo, which I think is an old companion from prior games. I made it through 7 without much prior knowledge, and I think 7 part 2 covers some history in 3. The documentation of the games are really cool as they are written as if by characters in the games and give a good background to the game. Even the cluebooks were written that way too, with cool illustrations.

Download Exult, and pick the nice Windows sounds. Crank up the resolution if you don't care about, "cheating," and check out my game companions for Ultima if you have an android.

>>6649701
It's not about cheating, it's breaking the game because.
U7 has triggers based on whether somebody is on screen. With an expanded view they never leave the screen and you can't progress.
The dungeons are braindead either way.

that perspective gives me a headache
the font ain't all that hot either, don't think I could play this for long without getting fatigued

The perspective gave me a headache at first.
But playing for 10-15 minutes a day for a few days and you can easily work that up til other games look weird.

Also there's a mod for Exult that lets you change the perspective.
I haven't tried it but it seems useful.

If you're old grumpy like me and cant handle Exult.

If your mouse is running twitchy in GOG or DosBox.

Go into your Windows settings and turn up the sensitivity on your mouse and the problem will go away. Turn it up about 2 notches.

Play U6 to get more of the references in U7.

One of the Top5 RPGs of all time

I would however recommend of getting in to run via Exult because its additional features will spare you some headaches

So if I use Exult and crank up the resolution I'm going to inevitably fuck up the game?

I heard ultima 4 is best on master system, is that true?

The SMS port is very well done and handle some things better than the contemporary computer versions, not to mention the terrible Nintendo version.
Nowadays xu4 is a decent alternative.
In the end it depends on whether you prefer menu or shortcut based controls.

Ultima 6 looks absolutely kino with Nuvie.

There are at least sections where you need to turn the resolution down in order to progress.

I meant the NES version. That version used the perspective of later Ultima games.
