Fair enough, but I'm not familiar with or using any resources and just sort of winging it with the above game.

Probably not the best design philosophy, but if you're from the era you kind of should know what works from experience.

I can recommend using Aseprite for pixel art, at least.

This might be a good starting point. Though technically "hacking" than developing but it was basic coding info like hex tables and assembler guides.

On that note, would ROM hacking be a good way to practice?

>> No.6649273

The games need to have archaic design principles to feel genuinely old. Most NES developers were arcade developers and thus tried to make arcade games for home consoles. NES games were incredibly small, they rarely have wildly different worlds or levels, nor did they have many levels, unlike what a lot of modern 2d indie games like to wax nostalgic about.

>>6649262
OP here, and it's totally supposed to be about games emulating the design and mechanics of 8-bit and 16-bit games, not new games made specifically on old consoles.

I kind of figured the widescreen thing would have made it obvious.

>>6649243
No, but I'm too old to consider anything after 16-bit "retro".

Its slow going.
Nesmaker is ultimately a godsend, but it has very frustrating quirks. As far as i can tell, you can't make a template project to branch out into divergent builds, because all projects with shared lineage will share the same single pool of assets. There's no way to clone assets or code into a new 'instance'.
A lot of extra work has been wasted trying to work around this.

That's generally my take - but you have to realize that the entire community is amateur developers who are only using the sofware because they can't program.

Really the games aren't all identical by any means, but what really shines through is the physics - sidescrollers and platformers often do 'feel' the same, because of the core template.
You could easily change the physics if you wanted to learn a bit of real programming.

That said, there really aren't strong templates in place - they exist, but it's REALLY not 'drop your own assets into the sidescroller/zelda/tetris template'. It's a less-freindly program than that.

I'd definitely recommend buying the program if you're interested, it's worth more than the asking price. It was a big investment of attention for me to learn, though. I wasn't able to just open the program up and start noodling around - I'd say I spent a good 12 hours slowly following tutorials before I really felt like I could move off on my own.

It's honestly a strange program, it isn't constructed intuitively in my opinion. I'm an audio guy, but I work with creative software all the time and I've taught myself very different environments before.

Making a simple NES editor would be extremely difficult. The dev is doing the best he can, and I think he fucking pulled it off very well. There's just no way to approach the task with braindead simplicity in mind.

That is a deep question, anon.

The Z80 feels a lot closer to some kind of actual programming language like C, just with a small fixed number of "variables" you have to juggle. It's easier to understand than 6502 and has less surprising and mysterious behaviour.

The 6502 is a tesseract of enigma and oddity wrapped in a primitive and seemingly simple and benign looking shell. It will take a life time to master it and it will consume your soul.

(Just look up the 6502 BIT instruction if you want weird, hacky, hard-to-fully-grasp instructions)
