Exactly. Which is why the CRT filters are shit. They're far too strong, for the distance at which people sit from their computers. They need to be toned WAY the fuck down to actually match a proper viewing distance of CRT's. The way these idiots in the thread have them calibrated you'd think they watched TV's with their nose against the fucking glass. It's disgustingly shit.

That's never going to happen because, again, if you sat as close to a CRT as you sit to your monitor it will look like shit also. CRT filters look fine on my TV but look shit on my monitor. >> No.6643967

I think people focus too much on the fact that CRT filters may or may not look like a real CRT when they should be focusing on whether it achieves the same effect. Like, you don't play on a CRT *because* it's a CRT nor because of what exactly it does to make your low-res image prettier; You play on them because it looks prettier and that's it. So if a filter can achieve the same effects and trickery that a CRT plays on your image then I don't give a shit whether it actually looks like the real thing.

It's because all of you people and the entire retro gaming "scene" are absolute fucking brainletts. If you hook up your snes via scart or rgb on some crt you're gonna get a very clean image.
The only proper way to get some of the intended visual effects is to play via composite. Sonics waterfalls, the water stage in castlevania bloodlines, rocket knight's transparencies, etc all only work over composite signal. Same goes for a lot of snes games like secret of mana, etc.
You can even hook up your snes or genesis to a modern oled TV via composite and get the desired effects. Even without a billion dollar framemeister.

how are you not comprehending that you'd also need to take a photo of a filter on an lcd "from your couch" to make it look like a crt from a couch?

>> No.6648000

why do people bring filters with the image rounded. this is complete faggot faggotry

no matter if you had a normal or flat crt. they do not round the image unless it was completely bad calibrated, practically on purpose,

he's talking about the 'pincushion' effect, tv's account for the curvature of the screen by warping the picture the opposite way, cancelling out the effect of the screen, which causes the picture itself to appear correct, as if there's no screen curve
this of course only works if you're facing the screen and are far enough away from it

If you're going to use something to smooth it use something like 6xBRZ that at least attempts to keep line fidelity.

>shaders
Most of them are absolute bullshit. Most genesis emulators have built in composite signal switches that are much more performant than any shit at the wall shader. That being said just emulating the way composite transports an image most of the time gives a better result than stacking a bunch of shaders on top of each other with no rhyme or reason. The way composite works is what all those crt masturbators look for and lack the understanding to emulate. It's not about creating a shader to emulate phosphor glow and give you eye cancer in the process, it's the way composite transports both Luma and chroma information with the same signal and how the TV separates them that made it possible to anticipate certain visual effects from developer side and be sure that it will approximately display correctly regardless of TV, if the proper signal is used.
But because most retro game nerds are literal consoomers with no technical knowledge about the subject they're obsessing over they don't realize it and waste thousands of hours trying to recreate virtual crts via shader.
