- tank controls made worse by isometric directions
- closer to an action-adventure puzzle platformer than a traditional jrpg
- probably the most original thing I've ever played, seriously, it's a game unlike anything else

If you can get used to the movement and frustrating platforming it can be really enjoyable for the crazy story and how experimental the game is. You must play all the 3 parallels to fully appreciate it so dont get fooled into thinking that once the credits roll the first time that the game is done, its not a matter of minor changes and alternate endings, each part is truly just a third of the whole picture.
Each parallel is accessed based on how fast you get to the ship's captain at the start of the game. over 4 minutes(timer turns red, inevitably your first run) for parallel 1, between 3 and 4 minutes for parallel 2(timer turns yellow, aim for it in your second run) and less than 3 minutes for parallel 3(timer remains blue, should be your third run so by then you'll be good enough to take all the risky time saving shortcuts but feel free to savestate as much as you wish.)

In parallel 1, when the time comes, its fine if you choose to carry or leave Drizzit but in parallel 2 you definitely want to take Kay with you.
If you want, look up how to capture enemies, its a neat gimmick but the vast majority of the time it's much easier and safer to stick with Garian as long as you don't forget to equip all the sword upgrades as you get them.

Plays way better on mednafen than ssf.

Everything else aside, I still rank it above the majority of jrpgs just because tricky platforming is easier to endure than obnoxious turn based random encounters.

Good to know this game throws so much SP and MP restore items at the player, It might be because I'm an idiot whose bad at avoiding enemy encounters but normal battles feel like they take way more out of me than bosses do. I just beat the 2nd Termite quest where the queen invades Avalon and all of normal termites were able to soak up thousands of points of damage whereas the boss went down pretty easily.

>all of normal termites were able to soak up thousands of points of damage whereas the boss went down pretty easily
I believe that's due to battle rank not affecting most bosses. But it's good that most bosses go down easily for you since that means you stand a chance against the final boss, which is much harder than any boss you've fought up until now (that is, if you decide not to cheese it). You may also want to do the Maze of Memories, in case you haven't done it yet. It's a fun optional dungeon added in the remaster.

I'm actually in the process of doing it, I beat the red dragon first, and went back to Avalon to check on the blacksmith, and incidentally I had unwittingly triggered the Termite invasion event, which to be honest made me panic pretty bad since I thought all of my recruitable party members in the castle were all dead

Romancing SaGa 1, 2, and 3. RS1 is rather clunky and unfinished. I wouldn't recommend it as a first SaGa game, but it's still pretty interesting and fun (although more from a historical viewpoint). That game received an unofficial translation by DDSTranslation in 2016. RS2, in my opinion, is the best out of the three Romancing SaGa games. It's a very unique JRPG and definitely ahead of its time, although also the hardest among the three. This one received an official translation with the remaster in 2016. Romancing SaGa 3 is a pretty good SaGa game and also definitely worth playing. It's rather similarly structured to RS1, as in you have 8 characters to choose from, in the beginning. It's unequivocally the most beautiful SFC SaGa game. RS3 got an official translation in 2019 as part of the remaster of the game released in that year. There also exists an unofficial, nearly complete translation of the SFC game released before it, although the quality of that translation isn't the best.

>> No.6645552

>>6645502
My biggest problem with RS3 was the lack of story. Hell, the game never told me about the Abyss Gates at all [Harid plathru, dunno about other characters]. You just kind of have to eventually explore them and realize there isn't much else to do. Then once you beat it, well, no real story there, just congrats you win.

I was playing Vanguard Bandits but I dropped it because I played other TRPGs before in a row (Tactics Ogre, three Front Mission games) and the burnout hit me late.
I'm thinking about picking any of the Metal Max games or maybe pick Arc the Lad and not drop it for the third time —the game is good, but I always play something that drags me more inbetween, like AoE2—.
Romancing SaGa 2 and Ogre Battle would be good as well, but I can't play ten hours straight and risk it with an aneurysm or something. Free time is good, but filling it with vidya so the dread of my funds running out doesn't settle in is becoming harder everyday.

A tad late but a piece of advice: Lufia 2 is HEAVY on puzzles on dungeons. I love them and that's my main drag but I've found a lot of people that get away from the game for that reason.
The puzzles are fine but don't hesitate in looking up a guide if you can't solve one. It's a great game that you shouldn't overlook.

>> No.6645712

>>6645552
SaGa games have a non-linear structure and the plot is delivered via lines from random NPCs, although, more often than not, it's more about your own adventure than a pre-defined one, hence why the "story" is often as blank as possible. It definitely encourages roleplaying and using your imagination. It's very ambitious for a 16-bit JRPG and, to be frank, I don't even know of a single non-linear JRPG with a seriously great story, let alone a 16-bit one. You should check out SaGa Frontier 2 for a SaGa game with a good story; it's also the only really linear SaGa game out there.

exactly. I used to constantly reload my saves during my first playthrough and frequently look up a guide as I was so scared of fucking something up, and I absolutely hated it. Then, about 40% into the game, I decided to ditch the guide and not always reset, and it turned into one of my most favorite JRPGs of all time. If you mean for Dark Savior in particular, it plays perfectly on Mednafen, the only annoying thing about that emulator is that it doesn't have a GUI so you're gonna need to check out some guides to set it up. SSF was the go to for Saturn emulation for many years but as far as Im aware Mednafen has caught up and surpassed it in most cases. Both of the Frontier games are really good, the only difference is that SaGa Frontier 2 has one of the hardest SaGa end-games. It's a huge difficulty spike. The final dungeon especially is a hellhole if you don't know what you're doing. SF2 has become one of my most favorite JRPGs, although only after I understood how the underlying systems worked. Just make sure to passively level up the HP of your final party passively (by using arts exactly equal to or less than your WP/SP regeneration rate. This will either cause WP, SP, or HP to be leveled up), get some important arts (guard beast, regenerate/soul hymn, reviva, permamence, Multi-Way, etc.), convert crowns to chips, and to frequently use combo attacks, if you want to beat this game on your first try. SaGa Frontier 1 is much more beginner-friendly and forgiving. This would probably be a better first SaGa game. Romancing SaGa 3 is also a pretty good beginner SaGa game.

>> No.6648231

yeah, that item is essentially just proof that you managed to beat her. My guess would be that the devs didn't want to add any items in the remaster that'd make it much easier, although the new formation already is pretty strong. Also, after retrying the dread queen yesterday, I'd have to say that the final boss, without any cheese strats, is much harder, simply because it can have up to 7 turns in a row alongside other pretty devastating attacks, but I don't want to spoil you. Romancing SaGa 2 is pretty tough overall, it's just that the end-game of SaGa Frontier 2 is seriously difficult. The final boss of SF2 (as in the unbuffed one) has an AoE attack which always does 1LP damage, has an AoE petrification attack (and there's only one item in the game that wards petrification), has an attack that removes 60% of all party members HP, etc. Ideally, you'll want to fight this thing with your LP maxed out and combo attacks to beat every phase (of which there are 10 IIRC) in a couple of turns. I'd say it's manageable if you know what you're doing, but you'll have to do a lot of preparation and it's pretty easy to miss a lot of things in that game.

Another thing for NG+ you could try is beating the game before triggering the final emperor. It's possible but a bit hard to set up.

Oh well that's good to know.
>Another thing for NG+ you could try is beating the game before triggering the final emperor
I figured it was possible, in fact I heard there are several triggers that cause the final emperor that aren't really related to progress. I saw that if you die 80 something times you just get forced into the final generation, which is kinda hilarious.

>> No.6648438

there's even someone who combined this "no final emperor"-challenge with a solo run and managed to beat the game. This is why I love RS2 so much: because it's so damn replayable. There's just so much stuff to do and virtually every playthrough is different in one way or another. Apart from the few optional things I mentioned (maze of memories, gelid ruins, forgotten village, etc.), I am not aware of any other side-quests and the like (although I am probably forgetting a few things). If you can already enter the final dungeon, then I'd say you should prepare for the final boss now.

2 is sort of more polished, it's just unfairly balanced. 1 is just easier to get into, but you could definitely start with 2 if you have the motivation to learn all the systems. The hardest SaGa game to get into would probably have to be Unlimited SaGa.

>> No.6648732

I recently finished SaGa Frontier for the first time, playing as Red. After my initial experiences with the franchise, I wasn't expecting it to be that easy. I really liked the game, but I don't think I'll replay it too soon. So I restarted RS3, which I tried playing right after finishing 2 but it didn't really click with me. So far, I'm having a far better time. SaGa games are great to play while watching baseball.

I know they're not retro, but this is the only board where people talk about SaGa. Anything I should know/be wary of about MS, Unlimited and Scarlet Grace before starting them, later on?

>> No.6648865

>>6648732
MS is great. People often think of it as one of the greatest SaGa games. I personally found it to be pretty good. It definitely has a lot of content. I wouldn't say you need to know a whole lot in advance to really understand this game. It's a lot like RS3 (and obviously RS1).
As for SSG and Unlimited: They're both rather similar as in they feel more like board games than what SaGa games usually feel like. You should note, though, that Unlimited SaGa is much more confusing than SSG. I'd say you should see for yourself when it comes to these games. SSG shouldn't be too hard to get into, but Unlimited might be, so looking some things up in advance could be helpful.

what annoyed me the most is this AoE charm attack. I can't even remember how often one of my party members put Gilden Shield on the Seven Heroes or killed all my party members (or just removed all of their revives) just due to that stupid status effect. Had I known this beforehand, then I would've probably chosen a female emperor and more female party members. Then there's soulsteal which, even with an evasion tech, could still permakill a party member if they're at 0 HP (and maintaining everyone's HP can sometimes be pretty difficult since there isn't AoE healing in this game). That, combined with the ungodly amount of turns this thing has makes it such a nightmare to fight.

Playing thru the ff series starting at 1. I was able to go right thru 1 and 2 and now am on 3, but 3 sucks balls so far. The weird pacing of getting the airship at the beginning only to lose it, then going up a mountain and being chased off by a dragon then being forced to do a mini dungeon to get a ship where i can then get back to the normal map is some god awful beginning of the game pacing. Im so lost and i feel like there isnt as much room to expirament since no phoenix downs and there arent always revival pools around. Is this one really as bad as it seems or am i missing the point?

Yes you are missing the point. FF3 is all about experimenting, trying out the various classes is super fun. Regarding revival items, I remember having your characters dying wasn't such a factor, in a way. Like, usually having your characters die and revive all the time is completely normal, but FF3 is made in a way that you shouldn't be dying as much (I don't remember there being ANY insta kill enemies for starters), usually getting one character killed means pulling out of the dungeon and trying again (always have Telepo handy)
And I dunno, gaining and losing transportation methods over the story made the game super interesting imo.

It's mostly a rebalancing hack, making jobs more unique, monsters more useful - that kinda stuff
I wanted to rework the magic system so you could choose how you wanted to cast a spell, whether through charging or using MP. Charged spells don't cost MP but they can only target tiles, MP spells are instant but MP is almost impossible to restore
It made spellcasters more useful (and more dangerous as enemies)

The water spell Hasten Time. Makes you skip all of the enemies' turns for one round; pretty OP, especially combined with something like the rapid stream formation, which always makes you attack first. Continuous casting causes you to essentially get an infinite amount of turns.

There are jobs that are very gimmicky, like Chemist or Thief, but you will be running around so much that you'll end up mastering them in no time after you're done with more appealing jobs. At least mastering jobs in V is easier and more helpful than in III.

I literally went blind into FF4-FF6 and 100%'ed all of them and always knew where to go next to progress. Anyone know if Magic stat effects Lucca's bombs and firegun?

I think she relies on 'hit', but the gamefaqs guides should have her specifics

You're allowed to post here but it'd be better if you took this to your containment board.

Playing through the SMT series before V comes out. the first game had aged pretty badly I think. I'm just at the start of 2 and it seems like a huge improvement.

Fire emblem four, tho im not sure if it could constitute solely as a jrpg but nonetheless it’s an rpg without the tedium of grinding and encounters

I think her kit would be considered strong if the game were harder. It's been a long time but IIRC she's very handy against the Red Nu.

Is front mission enjoyable enough on the psx? I do enjoy the tactical game play that I've experienced in ffta and fm1.

Really? I was leaning towards Final Fantasy 7. Is Chrono Trigger better?

Front Mission 1 is very rough around the edges when it comes to gameplay, but the story and feeling of military life makes up for it. Play the Playstation version or the NDS port for the USN campaign but, if possible, play the fantranslation of the SFC game to get a better feeling of the characters in the OCU side.
Again, the gameplay is very unrefined (Only weapons with more than 1 space of distance are missiles, despite fighting with guns, you have to depend on items for repairs and reloads, skills are few and appear in the middle-to-late parts of the game), but it would be good for you to play this one before the others if you are interested, because new features make it hard to come back.
The gameplay improves a lot in 3 and peaks in 5 but 4 is also a good game. 2 got a fan translation but you have to keep the script open in a notepad because it wasn't inserted. Also the game is hard as all hell and the maps are bigger than in following games, but it still has things that would be tweaked in the next game.

desu any JRPG could be your first JRPG unless you're literally retarded or a child. People often only recommend FF4, FF6, FF7, CT, etc., because they're incredibly easy. CT is probably one of the easiest alongside FF4.

Playing the original unaltered hard as fuck version without knowing how to speak moonrunes, enjoying the challenge. 10/10, would recommend to any fans of this hidden gem.

Beat the game last year. I think the game looks great honestly. plus the soundtrack is so much better than the NES version. I can see people seriously hating this game playing NES. its a solid 6-7/10
