Not entirely sure where to ask, but does anyone either have any vague idea on how to 'compile' the LTTP source, or otherwise know where I can go/who I can ask to find out?
I know assembly, mind you, I'm just not used to working with assembly stuff on this scale and don't know how I'm supposed to put everything together.
I'd like to start making basic modifications to the game for fun, and I can figure out the assembly just fine, but, again, just not sure how to put it all together.

Asking again here just in case any more people have some ideas.

So what are the biggest things found so far in the leaks? Star fox voice files and its proto type are nuts.

>> No.6641473

So yeah, like I was saying last thread, I'm not a /vr/ regular, but I remember specifically coming here around May when another batch of leaks were released. There was an anon that set up a website to document and archive the leaks. I don't remember the site, and I can't search my browser history right now because I'm on mobile, away from my computer. I cannot think of a proper relevant search term to type in a 4chan archive to find it either.

>Assets for prototype Pilotwings/"Dragonfly"
>Super Mario World: A bunch of beta elements, such as old overworld maps, sprites for Bowser and the Koopalings, a huge chunk of Yoshi's design cycle and more

I also wish there wasnt so much disinformation going on, everything is moving so quick and people are eager to run with rumors and lies. I keep hearing rumors about stuff such as the original Super Mario Bros source code getting found in all this but have no way of knowing for sure. This is from all stars but you can probably assume most of the logic code is untouched from the NES SMB. The SNES's cpu is a souped up nes cpu basically, so they'd only have to alter graphics/sound handling code to make it run on the snes.

Nice environmental maps I guess. Been doing that since the early 90s to safe on render time or to blend them with limited "real" (raytraced) reflections in my renders.

I haven't gotten to all the weapon variants yet... could the tri-blade be different??? Well maybe it's not even available in this prototype, haha. I will play more and find out.

If you would like to do the same then try this, it's where I got the ROM file: https://mega.nz/file/hk4SjSqT#_45SjaMTXttCjipUvf3CiI7txfwnjy_2UlhtxIQsU_Y

>the 1994-05-04 file is from -05-06 afaik, and its original filename is SF6-5.sfc, if you feel like fixing the typo in the readme
>there is a 1996-06-21 build in \other.7z\SFC.7z\SFC\ソースデータ\StarFox2\SF2\ but afaik it doesn't run
>I'd argue in favour of including a prepatched version of the 2002 leak rom, just for convenience
>the build in \other.7z\SFC.7z\SFC\ROM\StarFox2\usa is dated 1995-09-21, while the SNES Classic is dated 1996-12-24, although afaik there's no difference between them, still, why not include it too?

It is strange, especially since I think the source code start date was shown as 1992 or something? I guess they just spent a good bit of time playing around with gameplay mechanics, and when they finally settled on what they wanted, presumably some time in early 1995, everything else just fell into place. I haven't seen the whole thing yet, but how many levels resemble ones in the final game? As another anon pointed out, maybe many were indeed just placeholders, the level designers getting the hang of things while they still worked on pinning down the gameplay, so that once the gameplay was finalized, they'd at least have something to work with. Which makes sense, since it wouldn't be a good idea to have fully fleshed out, carefully planned levels based around known to be unfinished game mechanics.

I would be curious to know the normal development time for a game in the SNES era. The 5 months or so during which they seemingly went from a kinda janky concept game to something so fleshed out could've been not too many months less than the full development cycle for a "normal" game of the time.

Ah, when you put it that way, I guess it makes a little sense. You could definitely get away with lazy, weird, and sometimes broken stage design if the aim is just to have something to work with. But then again, some of the levels look so wildly different and are structured so wildly different, I still have to wonder why they even bothered to map out every stage if they were all going to be replaced anyway.

Mayne they felt they needed some halfway playable levels in which to experiment with their gameplay. Maybe it wasn't unusual for Nintendo to put so much effort into their experimentation. To that end, we do have enough assets to see that they did experiment with some graphical world map stuff that in no way resembles the assets used in the final game.

This is still 4chan and we're dealing with leaked stuff which is already in hot water, but fair enough, even if it hinges on the assumption later users will know where to find the other.7z. Then again it's easy enough to find the official release, it was out since day one.

afaik it's all dupes, there's five builds in other.7z/SFC.7z/ソースデータ/StarFox2/ and five others with the same dates in other.7z/NEWS.7z/StarFox2/

They might have run into stability/performance concerns for the multiplayer, or they might have felt like there were too many features and they had to narrow their focus.
More curious are all the dropped characters, assuming they're not just designs. What could the pre-Andross plot have been like? The T-Rex might have been the big bad, for one.

I'm not talking about taking the source code and using it AS IS (even though you'd probably get away with that too if you just grab bits here and there). I'm talking about looking at code and using it in order to get 1:1 behavior or at least really close to it.

Hey thanks mate. I was gonna do that one myself after I'm done with the source codes.

Here's some bad news from my camp - I've searched hard and we have no source code before June 1995. Meaning that the original idea for the game might was well be a mystery.

Perhaps something changed between August 1994 and CES in January of 1995 in how they want to get the game going.

All I know is that is kind of sad cause I really wanted to look into that funky shit from earlier protos.

I've been talking with few of the people and they're all very very intrigued by that 1994 prototype - might be reasonable to dig in deeper.

Given how shape data works in SF2, It might be good idea to try and find specific word (16-bit word) sequences for some of the Watanbe's 3D work in that ROM. Perhaps the Dino is still there.

As for the mystery of Pierrot? Shit if I can get a compiler to compile a ROM there's a chance that the Mirage Dragon could be swapped for Pierrot cause all of his data is still there. He's just not used.

Other than that - found stuff like a training level with various 'stages' including flying through rings and other interesting stuff.

Buddy, reality is a lot more complex then you make it out to be. Yes, by the end the PS1 won that generation.
However in terms of public discourse the N64 was far more prominent. Especially when a real big new game was coming out for it.
The PS1 sold more but it didn't get as much representation. The N64 was in McDonald's and hospitals around America which gave access to tons of people who didn't or couldn't buy one,the N64 was in tons of movies, Mario was used for milk commercials.
I was there at the time and I remember a lot of people had a PS1, however when it came to media representation and what people who didn't play video games thought that the N64 was a genuine revolution. Felt like true virtual reality.

Nobody was arguing about "who won" which is something that's generally decided at the end of a generation. And there's no history revisionism here, Mario was at the height of his popularity when the N64 released. Goldeneye did have that effect, but Mario 64 did it first.

Crackpot theory about OoT. People talk about how Ganon's Tower was going to be the hub world where you go in and out of paintings like Mario 64. My theory is that Ganon's Tower in the final version was one of the earliest areas they created because it still functions as sort of a hub world to all the dungeon themes and has wind as the central theme of the forest area and ice as the theme of the water area just like the design on the medallions suggests.

There are Unix sub-systems and registry hacks for older versions of Windows to make it work but that will take some googling.
I didn't write the guide, I just found the link from someone in /v/

I'm curious if they had more builds archived at some point that were lost due to the apparent failure/corruption/whatever of some of the tape backups. Or maybe the game builds we have were used for some particular, meaningful purpose during development (trade shows, magazine previews, investor relations, whatever) and weren't just random backups.

Damn, the colors on the magic beans are pure 90s. I had a set of super balls that had the same colors with that swirly color pattern.

Funny how the Zelda hipsterism has reversed for WW again. For a long time it was everyone's favorite because they wanted to be unique by liking the most hated one. But now people are realizing that it was hated when it came out for a reason.

I like her more feminine appearance in brawl but I always thought it was incredible that Sheik had a bulge in Melee. They will never have that level of realistic anatomy again.

I guess I'm gonna see why some missions don't advance properly in sf2 now. That training level sure went through a lot of changes in each revision only to never be used in later builds.

Any specific links? All this information is spread so far apart and it's hard to find any one source. It'd be nice to have some sort of comprehensive list or google doc of this shit. It's getting frustrating

>> No.6647495

>>6647426
The op doc is the best one so far. You'll basically want to use that as a guideline before asking things and or just sifting through yourself. It gets updated time to time but it's hard to juggle back and fourth all that stuff when there are hundreds of thousands of files to be looking through.

wonder if Sheik was originally meant to be a brand new character or if Zelda's disguise was going to be more involved

>> No.6647578

>>6647518
I've long had the headcanon that Sheik was a real Sheikah who'd lived and became sort of a folk hero to the Sheikah and that Zelda wasn't disguised herself as just some random person.

Being fun is often not really the point, though sometimes prototypes have elements that are different enough from the final build, beyond just simply being unfinished, to be a fun experience in their own right. For a lot of people, beyond the mere historical aspect, it is the feeling of an old beloved game becoming new again by way of a different (official) version, the ability to see what a particular game was like during the exact months that the gamer himself was eagerly anticipating it back in the day (or in some cases, how it was even before most of the world knew the game existed at all), to see old promotional screenshots come alive, to see and directly experience in full detail levels or enemies that once only existed in postage stamp size screenshots in a magazine, to directly control things once only known through video footage, to play the very versions which were previously played by only developers/testers/magazine writers/convention attendees, to delve into builds that almost nobody in the world has played in quite possibly a couple decades, to see a beloved polished game when it was still a buggy, very man-made looking product and a time capsule from before the final work was experienced by all, a peak behind the curtain of something that has brought you many hours of joy. Remember watching that promo or convention footage that cuts off right when the player was entering a cut area and wondering what that area would look like? With the right build of the game, you can. Remember wondering what that strange looking enemy shown in an old promo screenshot would actually do? Again, with the right proto, that enemy will finally come to life. Will it be exciting? No, probably not in any real objective sense, but that feeling of mystery solved can be thrilling in its own right, a years old itch finally scratched.
It is one of those things where either you experience those feelings and find them enjoyable, or you don't.
