The PS2 was released 20 years ago. Back in 2000, when the PS2 came out, the consoles that came out 20 years before that were things like Intellivision (1980), the second gen, before even NES. Was the NES considered retro when the PS2 came out? What about Intellivision? But the NES only came out 17 years before the PS2....it's been 20 years since the PS2 came out! And it's not retro!?

The PSX has much more in common with the PS2 than the SNES. The cut-off should obviously be before the transition to 3D, it's the biggest distinction between eras of games. Saying retro ended with the release of the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox is completely arbitrary, it's based on nothing. Not based on age, not based on technological leap, or the types of games being made.

I think there's a place for early 3D. I don't have much of an opinion on the "(don't)make PS2 retro" argument, but I'll say that's when 3D graphics started actually looking like something and there were far fewer limitations to work within. It doesn't feel retro, and there's not much of a case to make for it with things like the DMC collection coming to PS4 in the form of ports meant to be displayed in 1080p - 4K. It sort of loses the spirit of ingenuity devs NEEDED to have with early 3D, and I think the DC is a pretty good cut-off point considering all of that.

I'm thinking this board doesn't genuinely care about retro games and just "plays" them for a personal image/personality thing.

Sixth generation is not retro because sixth generation saw the emergence of retro gaming. Backwards compatibility was a selling point for the PS2, emulators for SNES, gameboy, and genesis neared perfection, and we started to see many official rereleases of old games on newer consoles.
Gen 6 was the birth of retro gaming, and retro referred to everything that had come before. That's just what it means.

Those webms look great as a collage and all but most 2D games on PS1 are very bland.
There's no equivalent to something like Revenge of Shinobi, Castlevania III, Sonic 3, NInja Gaiden etc on the PS1. It's mostly because devs weren't even trying with 2D and were mostly focused on 3D/FMVs.
It really tells you something when the most acclaimed 2D game on the system is mostly an RPG. The 2D platform genre was very weak during 5th gen.

My first console was a nes clone, then a japanese mega drive, then a gameboy color, a playstation 1. a nintendo DS Lite which can also play advance. gf had ps2 so i could only have mine years later after breaking up. a wii, same situation. next an xbox 360 which was mine but she took it and i had to buy another years later. a ps3. a 3ds and a new 3ds. and that's it.

Considered buying the switch but I probably won't, I'm not interested in new consoles and I have my good pc. May get a sega saturn and a dreamcast if a fair price appears.

Ironically enough the PS1 is the last retro console I bought. I bought the NES, then the SNES, then the N64, the dreamcast, genesis + 32x, Saturn, Sega CD, and finally playstation 1. From what I remember you were some kind of soldier and in the intro you were on a ship outside a castle and you entered the sewer and started playing? Kind of like Medievil (but not that). It might have been on a demo disk. It was a darkly lit game, and I think I remember the colors orange and green. Maybe there were slime enemies or slime puddles.

PS2 is retro, and it is the last bastion of what is common for retro gaming: STANDARD DEFINITION TELEVISIONS. Sixth gen consoles were meant to be ran on CRTs just like every system before it, consequently every system afterwards were built for widescreen and HD displays. There shouldn't be any arguing, PlayStation 2 and the rest of sixth gen are retro.
