Not quite, I just don't like the concept of moving forward a bit, stopping in an area to just punch a group of dudes until they're all dead, and repeat ad nauseum. Very tedious game design.

This has got to be the dumbest criticism Ive ever heard of any genre. Youre complaining that games about brawling focus on brawling instead of letting you skip all fights as you please and go to the town to talk with gay elf?

Mega Drive Streets of Rage and Shinobi series, all 6 games.
It's pure comfort food, when i'm front of the computer working or studying and want to unwind i open retroarch and start one of them, instantly warm and fuzzy feelings.

Name 1 beat em up where you aren't forced to stop to fend off groups of enemies before you can move forward again. This type of non-seamless game design is shit.

Clearing areas before moving to the next is standard in video games that don't auto-scroll and aren't "'open world sandboxes''.
That in itself isn't a criticism. Got anything meaningful to say?

>> No.6635905

>>6635881
Fighting enemies is the point of the genre, why the fuck would you care about the "seamless" camera scrolling? This is like complaining that you have to jump when you see pits in platformers, and that you just want to hold right and fall asleep instead

>> No.6635939

>>6635904
>Clearing areas before moving to the next is standard in video games
Uh, no it's not? Platformers and run 'n guns let you scroll the screen until the end of the stage, racing games let you play to the finish line, etc etc. It's not just autoscroll games and sandbox games. Belt scrollers are very restrictive on your freedoms, you have no choice but to just sit on a screen and fight enemies. Do you think in an irl fight you wouldn't be able to continue running on past a group of thugs, some imaginary camera forcing you to kill them all before you can leave that specific area? Of course not. Its stupid.

>> No.6635953

>>6635939
What happens in real life is frankly irrelevant since irl nothing in any of those genres makes sense besides racing perhaps. So you just want to run away from enemies, is that it? That's fucking retarded. Run n guns lock you in screens all the time too especially when they want to challenge you with set pieces and boss fights. And that's not an issue at all, it would be an issue if you could not dictate the pace of the FIGHTS but you can to a great extent, so if you wanna proceed quicker then play more risky.

>Belt scrollers are very restrictive on your freedoms, you have no choice but to just sit on a screen and fight enemies.
>you have no choice but to just sit on a screen and fight enemies.
That's the point of the genre, brawling. And that's part of the challenge, you can't just skip entire sections for free.
Even if you run another screen over, what do you think you'll be doing? brawling.

> Platformers and run 'n guns let you scroll the screen until the end of the stage
So? if you don't like jumping over shit you won't like platforming, if you don't like running and shooting you won't like run n guns. You aren't saying anything meaningful by saying your ''movement freedom is limited''.

>racing games
limit your movement a lot lol, and punish you going off track, that's part of their challenge

Glad that you asked!
The appeal of most SaGa games is picking different sets of partners or following the story of different characters at a time. Frontier is my favorite because, although unfinished, the world and stories bond seamessly and you can go straight to the point or find additional content, like magic schools or finding known faces in the Regions.
Another JRPGs I enjoy replaying are Final Fantasy I because of party building.
