No excuse for this lack of imagination. Chrono Trigger had prehistoric villages, medieval towns, sci-fi postapocalyptic bunkers, a magical flying kingdom. FFVI has ten variations on the "town" tileset and then a couple of others which everyone will pick as their favorite (Zozo!) because it had one unique thing about it, which certainly makes it stands out in an otherwise very uninspired and bland world.

Loved this game as a kid and Been playing the GBA version these past months on quarantine and I'm still hooked.

The point is they had the technology to visually distinguish towns on the SNES so it's not like the only reason FFVII had a more interesting world was that it was on PS1.

No duh. Of course FF6 was graphically limited.

Just like FF7 was limited in the customization system. 32-bit 3D models were still not advanced enough during that hence it was hard to customize the equips due to the models being "set" because of the PS1 memory limitations.

FFVI had a bland and repetitive world compared to some other JRPGs on 16-bit consoles. I could point to Phantasy Star IV and Secret of Mana as well, a bunch of others. Technological limitation isn't an excuse for their lack of ambition and imagination, they were obviously interested in other things (like stuffing it with 14 playable characters) instead of worldbuilding. Of course FFVI has some things going for it but the world isn't one of them.

That is true, you're right. More emphasis was placed on the contrast between the world of balance and the world of ruin, than on necessarily fleshing out the world as a diverse place. It's not a bad choice, but I would have preferred if I had more reason to care about the old world before it was destroyed. I think of a series like Dragon Quest where each town has their own vignettes, so even if they look samey, I remember the people and stories in them. FFVI doesn't really have that, the towns are just places where your main playable characters do things. They didn't visually distinguish them, but they barely distinguished them in terms of storytelling either.
