i'm willing to bet most zoomers aren't aware of ssb, and that most of the ones that do don't know that melee isn't the first one

Some zoomer probably got touched inappropriately at a Smash event.

like pokemon, SSB is a game made for kids. kids games by nintendo often do quite well.

The game was good. Options and alternatives were limited. The commercial was good. My school had it.

The game was originally going to be a new IP with sentai-like characters. Unlike what may initially seem like a cash grab to sell a game based only on characters, Smash Bros. actually provided polished gameplay that guaranteed people would be coming back to it because it was actually a good game, and the familiar Nintendo characters are just the cherry on the top.
Also, the gameplay is like a deeper Kirby Super Star, which already had pretty tight controls.

Zoomers were newborn babies when Melee came out.

Also forgot to add, there was no hype for Smash 64, as I remember, the same day I saw the TV ad, I bought it at the store. I don't remember magazines hyping it up, it was like a lowkey release. Melee was also kinda like that, I remember going to buy the Gamecube in early 2002, and Melee was the game I bought with it, wasn't even aware they already made a sequel.
It was with Brawl that the "smash pre release hype" became a thing.

As an N64 babby, those character bios were a fairly significant factor in my acquiring of an SNES and subsequent descent into the /vr/ rabbit-hole.

Nice. Those bios were pretty soulful, basically proto-trophies.
I recently was playing SSB and looked through them again, noticed Mario's game list includes Mario Kart 64 instead of SM64, found that weird. Turns out, the original japanese version does list SM64, and not Kart. Wonder if that was deliberate on the western version, and why.

just can't help yourself, can you?
doesn't matter that it's inarguably an allowed game, you just gotta squeeze in your distaste for games that are popular among people younger than yourself somehow
>well of course BABIES like that game herp herp!
guess what, most games were made for kids, how many adults were buying video game consoles for themselves?

>> No.6617706

>>6617697
Well just looked it up and it does seem deliberate, here's another change for Luigi from JP to US:
MK64 instead of SM USA (the US version uses "Super Mario Bros 2.", the american version, while japanese Luigi uses, obviously, the JP SMB2)

It really wasn't back then. But the newest game is like the ultimate crossover videogame. It might be too Nintendo-centric, but still nothing else comes close
