Early 3d PC games looked better than what consoles had at the time. Doom came out in 1993, Descent 1995. Once 3dfx Voodoo came out with patches quickly for Descent2 and Quake, it was no contest. But mostly nerds and rich kids had PCs, normies and poor fags had consoles.

The gunplay is garbage and in an FPS that's unforgivable, the level design is basically a curvy straight line and thus no exploration. I liked the first hour as it almost felt like a first person Resident Evil game, then you start getting more ammo than you could ever possibly need, tons of weapons and it just becomes a shitty run of the mill FPS. It's just really boring. Ironically the most hated part (Xen) is the only time the game gets interesting. Shooting guys in grey corridors/orange deserts for hours on end is not fun. The reason I hate it though is because it also started a lot of ugly trends in the industry which were done OK in half-life but shit everywhere else. There's a bunch of them but these are the 2 biggest ones:

I have heard so many devs of other studios always reference half-life and that intro sequence as being epic. However, in 99% of cases games that copy it do a fucking shoddy ass job. It's one of the reasons I stopped playing modern games. Dishonored for example. Everyone jerks it off to being so great, even former Thief devs, but when I played it: First 10-20 minutes is no-gameplay intro sequence, followed by peaceful world building/semi-tutorial area, then the gameplay slowly starts coming in but throughout the game you'll be interrupted by people blathering words. By the time the game actually started I was already sick of it. Sound familiar? It's almost exactly how half-life starts. Except modern games have turned the shit cinematic/useless NPC dialogue parts up to 11.

In half-life it probably takes 10 minutes for the game to start. Every other game it feels like it takes 1-2 hours before it becomes a real game.

Half life has you running all over the map because of your high movement speed and isn't a cover shooter like CoD. Plus you can hold up to dozens of weapons and quickly swap them as apposed to CoD's 2 weapon limit which opens far more combat opportunities. The two play nothing a like and CoD didn't take any influence from half life.

It was winning from the mid 90s to the mid 00s. In the late 00s the true AAA PC exclusives stopped being made and many of the console ports were unoptimized garbage. It got better when 8th gen came around because the consoles were so underpowered that optimization isn't even an issue, everybody except Nintendo is lacking exclusives and PC has become the official platform for esports.
In the early 90s PC had some great games like Doom but also plenty of shit that might as well be eurojank on a fucking amiga. If you didn't have a console in this era you were missing out. In the 80s PC was a pathetic shitheap with the worst "sound" on any machine. If you're playing multiplat computer games from this era you'll almost always be better off playing it on something else. The only comparably shitty machine was the Macintosh because it was in black and white.
