I will now not play your game.

Do you like Raiden? Then yes, the best shmup to start with is one that appeals to you. V is brutally long (though I guess it prepares you for loop) but 3 and 4 are really good entry points. DX and Fighters are good too. Wolflame is a great modern Raiden clone.

>>6607847
It's a rather barebones and old-school series, so I doubt it will really hook you in. Raiden Fighters spinoff series has way more complexities to them.

I like Raiden but I don't like how slow the ship is compared to other shooters.

>> No.6608041

Play 4, it has a faster ship + a very fast fairy

Truxton
Twin hawk

the bullets gets so fast that more ship speed is useless and would get you killed

>>6607847
yes start with 1, 2 or DX, they're the best in the series.

The speed is fine. Raiden series was never that difficult and they made part III and IV so much easier.

1 is deceptively hard and 2 is legit just fucking hard.

I say play 1 and if you like the style go for Raiden DX next. DX is like 2 but better, more modes and updated level layouts.

Tip, play with player 2 (blue ship) instead of the player 1 (red ship), and find a rom set without checkpoints if you want an easier time.

Its challenging but rewarding. Its not a bullet hell, but a really good toaplan style shooter (enemies approach from all sides). Its got a really cool 'bomb' system. You can either fly in concert with other fighter planes or send them all crashing down, kamikaze style into the ground forces. It slightly edges out truxton by virtue of the flight squadron system.

Any recs for stuff that plays like Toaplan but newer?

can someone who gives a shit explain these terms to me?

whats looping?
i know what mashing is but never heard of it in the context of shmups, is it hammering the button to actually shoot instead of being able to hold it down?

wtf are sphincter kills

i also wanna get into nice aestethic shmups, any recommendations?

>> No.6611140

>>6611131
>whats looping?
Looping is NG+ in shmups.
You beat the game, then it starts again often from stage 1, but with harder enemies and harder patterns, your score continues with you. Some games ''loop'' forever, so you can't really beat them, some loop only twice and only give you the true ending and true boss if you complete 2 loops.

>wtf are sphincter kills
in tense moments with fast movements you clench your sphincter/asshole shut.

>>i also wanna get into nice aestethic shmups, any recommendations?
gun frontier
battle garegga
tatsujin ou

What about mashing?

>> No.6611347

>>6611340
Mashing the button manually for good damage, trash mechanic that became obsolete very quickly as cabs added built in autofire buttons. Because of a lack of foresight on the dev part some games became broken and piss easy thanks to the high autofire rates, but despite this auto is very commonly accepted even for said games.

>> No.6611348

>>6611347
Seems like you could compromise and just cap the rate of autofire at some limit? Do people do this?

>> No.6611349

>>6611348
some people set their auto-fire rate to something they would normally be able to mash, instead of going full 30hz. that way you save your hands and don't get an obvious advantage.

>> No.6611368

>>6611348
Yeah lots of people do that when playing for 1ccs. But if youre playing for score that puts you at a disadvantage because nobody cares about your exact autofire rates, only whether or not you used it.

>> No.6611384

everyone uses auto-fire, specially world record holders, not using it is like doing an extra challenge just to flex
