Here's a metaphysical question for all the Gen Y'ers - 'boomers', if you will out here. Assuming you were either a Sony PlayStation 8-10 year old kid as opposed to a Nintendo 64 kid. What would have happened had it been the opposite? ie, your parents got you a Ninty 64 instead of a PS1 and vice-versa? And yes, i guess the question applies to to people who had the SNES/Genesis and NES/Master System as well as it applies to them when they were 8-10 as well as there are actually a few 40+ year olds on /vr/ as well.

>inb4 rich cunts who had both and the 2 people here who actually had a Saturn as an 8-10 year old.

you know these 2 became major fuck ups in life for getting that piece of shit little fagget console

had a snes then ps1 back then.
visiting my cousin was more interesting since he had a mega drive and would probably get fucked with the 64 since no piracy.

i bought my playstation with pamplet run money when i was 10, my parents didn't buy me games
as for why i chose it, i don't really remember. i knew one person with a playstation, and had played crash 1 on it a couple times, and didn't know anyone with an n64, i don't think i'd really looked into the n64 at all, not like when i was a bit older and weighing up 6th gen offerings
idk, playstation had all the cool looking games, it had lots more to choose from, and they were much cheaper than n64 games. that and i got it when the psone came out, and it was quite cheap, iirc it cost me NZD$160, though i have no idea how much an n64 cost at the time

years later i made a friend who had an n64, and also tried emulating a few games... i don't regret getting a playstation

as for previous consoles, i had a master system before the playstation, i was never a fanboy of any particular company

You would just go to a friend’s house amd play the console that you didn’t have. Every one had different consoles. This is how i played a sega cd for the first time.

>> No.6606026

It would be very different for me as Nincel.

Never would have become a Zelda fan, at least not to the degree, if not exposed to OoT as my first real game. Never would have had kino multiplayer on Goldeneye, Mario Party, Mario Kart, Smash early on - going to friends houses and sleepovers would have been less based.

Would have got into FPSs sooner, as without console loyalty from N64 I would have got what everyone else had (PS2, maaybe Xbox). As a result I would have been decent at them, and would be playing them online now instead of 1player games only. Would have been more involved with video game culture etc. because Nincels kind of sequester themselves, unless theres a big title like Smash or BOTW that everyone seems to have an opinion on.

Can't say one way or the other which would have been better, but I'm glad I got n64.

I had an N64 at my mums house where I was most of the time, and a PS1 at my dads where I went on weekends. So I grew to prefer the N64. I didnt really like my dad, and I always saw the PS1 as inferior.
So what if Id had a PS1 and a N64 at my dads? I would probably have preferred the PS1 all these years, but certainly wouldve done a deeper dive into N64 library in recent years. I feel the N64 has more to offer and more longevity. I dont really feel any need to pick up my PS1 and havent actually played it in probably over 15 years now.

>because Nincels kind of sequester themselves
This is kind of true. I feel totally frozen out by modern "AAA" (or even "AA") vidya these days. I havent played a FPS since TimeSplitters 3. I now get drawn in by interesting, unique games - regardless of platform or creator. For example, a few years ago, I got obsessed with that PC game Papers, Please. I just hadnt seen anything like it and I love that type of thing. The issue is, Nintendo are really good at these quirky, unique games. I may be biased - because I grew up on N64 and Cube - but thats how I see it.

i am less of a fanboy nowadays, though, and as I say, I just get drawn in to very idiosyncratic, unique games, regardless of who made it.

>I now get drawn in by interesting, unique games - regardless of platform or creator.
i'm like this as well
i don't follow modern gaming at all, and also only look into games that are really different
the newest fps i've played was splatoon though, i emulated it a couple years ago (could only play the single player part), just couldn't help myself from wanting to try out it's ink mechanics
i've never actually owned a nintendo home console when they were new, had a master system, playstation, and playstation 2. but if i were to get a current console, it'd probably be a nintendo one, why? because as you said, they tend to come out with more unique games, that and i have a pc for the multiplatforms

My mate had a PS4 and i was round there sometimes, the indy-dev scene is OK, you can find some interesting little games on it. But they do get old very quickly.

Of late i have just been playing retro stuff. Re-discovering things I never played back in the day. I had never played Link To The Past, until recently, for example.
AAA gaming just leaves me totally cold. I havent had a console since Xbox 360, 5+ years since I played that.

I would have been drowning in my favorite genre, the platformer, instead of only having Mario and Banjo and DK.

Bait take, but I wonder if your favourite genre became platformers BECAUSE of your exposure to kino titles like Banjo/Mario/DKC?

desu I grew up affluent, and i think multiple consoles is more a poor parenting move than strictly related to means. If you had both, you never really had to cope when MGS or OoT dropped. May have limited fanboyish but also could lead to entitled mindsets.

You're right, Mario and DK are the reason my favorite genre is the platformer, they were just platformers from before your time.
