NEC only covered the TG at launch iirc and it was pretty decent at the time. Once it went to TTI it went downhill. In 1988 it looked rad as hell. CD player, 5 players multitap. I was only 4 at the time and didnt have a console yet, but I sure as hell wanted a turbo, and that was only going off one ad.

if legendary axe would have been the pack-in, it might have changed their trajectory to some extent. I think in any case Sega long term was going to have more games that appealed to american consumers than NEC and Hudson, but if Legendary Axe had been the pack in, early adopters would have been more satisfied and word of mouth would have been stronger for TG-16. Legendary Axe and Altered Beast have similar vibes but Legendary Axe is a more well-rounded game. Altered Beast probably has it beat in terms of presentation, with the transformation screen and wise fwum yuh gwave

although Genesis really had a second launch when Sonic came out. I was not aware at the time that the Genesis even existed pre-Sonic. Turbografx could have had the same thing with Bonk if they had immediately made it the pack-in and marketed it as hard as Sonic

I had one as a kid with a few dozen games. I don't think a single game on the console was a port except for SF2, which I didn't own, and the decent Taito arcade ports, like Cadash, Liquid Kids and Parasol Stars. Many games started on it and got lesser ports on other consoles, like Bomberman '94 -> Mega Bomberman.
Cadash on SMD/Genesis was fucking garbage in comparison to the arcade and TG16 versions.

Not sure where you live but in the US Toys'R'us had a decent sized section for TG-16 that had many titles. I bought Splatterhouse and Dragons Curse from them, among others. Was it as big as Nintendo and Sega? No, but it was there. It was set up as pic related. You would go to the game pick up area after presenting the paper slip from the aisle and paying for it.

You're forgetting the rental market. These weren't sold many places and hard to find games, but you could rent them at a rental store as well as several games. Their US marketing was pretty bad but it was an actual fun experience and blew the NES out of the water as far as graphics go.

I thought about buying one at Toys 'R US when I was a kid and saved up enough for a system but ended up buying a SNES since it had a lot of titles I wanted to play as well as swap with friends. No one I knew had a TG-16, but I liked the card-based game idea, and the Bonk and shoot em up games on the demo units were cool, just not cool enough to get their system instead of a SNES.

I appreciate it a lot more as an adult with such easy access to some of the rare titles and cd-based games though.

You don't know what you're talking about. TTi was absolute kino and basically salvaged the CD system in the US with the Super System Card, the Duo and as many localizations of JP games as possible with their shoestring budget and with Hudson/NEC actively sabotaging them to bury the embarassment that was the Turbografx-16 as fast as possible. In fact we would've have even better releases (Rondo, Macross, Rayxanber 2 and 3, World Heroes 2, a possible exclusive Mortal Kombat port, etc.) if Hudson didn't cockblock ol' Johnny Tubbs efforts. And remember, there were a bunch of titles stuck in development/localization hell from past expensive NEC contracts that TTi also salvaged and brought to market. TTi did as much as they possibly could to "save" the Turbo, they knew they had a great system on their hands and that a small victory was possible, but it was not to be because of JP corporate politics which were already plaguing SEGA at the time despite their success.
NEC delayed the launch of the turbografx in the US by almost two years because of a stupid form factor redesign and failed to beat the Genny to the punch with a significant lead. NEC cucked themselves out of strong third-party support from Electronic Arts which would have probably made other western devs follow suit and jump in if it happened. NEC did very poorly on marketing because of Japanese executive meddling. Etc, etc.

Pic related is a game that they had to pay buckets of licensing money to have on the Duo since NEC alienated EA into absolutely not doing anything on the console. It had to be ported by Hudson Soft in Japan, themselves.
