Why do so many people make the incorrect assumption. That retro is a general label to indicate age like the word generation or century. Retro is a label that indicates a specific time. There is no shifting around.

retro is just a generic term to mean something old though, just look at the dictionary:

When the SNES and Mega Drive were out, they weren't called retro because they were the latest thing. They were called a 90s console because that's an actual term referring to an era. Retro does not really refer to a specific era because the definition keeps changing. The only reason why people don't want gen 6 consoles to be talked about is because they feel like the games have a very different tone.
A more accurate term for /vr/ would be 20th century gaming

this is a containment board for pre-zoomer video games. some of my favorite games of all time are ps2 and gc games, personally. doesnt matter. this board is for remembering and revisiting a specific time period.

Exactly, that's what I meant by having a different tone. You simply just said it will "never be retro", but there must be a reason why and there is: graphical style, gameplay elements, tone, etc...
Also the choice of SSBM is a bad choice because it plays quite similarly to Smash 64 and its early Gen 6 graphics are reminiscent of Dreamcast titles.
