6581467 No.6581467 [Reply] [Original]

Nintendo and McDonalds had arranged an agreement on producing restaurant-specific kiosks before the Nintendo 64 was originally set to launch in April 1996. Nintendo marketing executives were also in talks with Blockbuster over the same thing, believing that common public stores could persuade non-gamers to try new games and purchase them.

Not long after the deal was made, the console's launch was delayed to June of that year. Still, it was anticipated that McDonalds restaurants in the States would begin receiving their kiosks before Thanksgiving. Manufacturing of the kiosks were carried out by Americans, but the general code of the games would be similar to kiosks in video game stores such as GameStop.

It's claimed that during testing of these kiosks around August 1996 an early version of the English translation of Super Mario 64 was used at one point. There were a few differences with source code compared to the official NA release. Frame rate issues were seemingly non-existent, but there was apparently a bug which turned Mario invisible if he put on the metal and wing caps at the same time. Outside of a few minor differences, however, there weren't many changes from the final release of the game.

I remember playing it at a blockbuster kiosk, but it was after the game was released.
I had the game at home so I just impressed other kids by playing well and pulling off a few hard to find stars really quickly.

I remember those lasting in some McDonald's till like 2009 or something(maybe even longer in some locations really out in the boonies), of course by that point a lot of them barely worked anymore since they probably hadn't seen any real maintenance in like 15 years if ever

they disappeared around the time that they started rolling out that chain wide makeover to try and make McDonald's look like Starbucks, which in turn made any McDonald's that got applied to become completely bland(the one by my childhood home used to have a bitching Sherlock Holmes theme to it, and the one by my dad's current house used to have a neat cartoon theme, even had autographs by a bunch of famous animators)

I remember playing Mario Tennis and the Rareware Mickey Mouse Kart game on these things. I think there's still a Wii/GameCube/? one in the town next to me but maybe they've gotten rid of it since then.
My biggest memories of McDonald's playplaces was that I used to exclusively wear sandals most of the time so half the time when I wanted to get into the playplace my mom had to buy me socks from McDonald's so I could do so.

I wonder, does a McDonalds even NEED a kiosk like that? I've worked in fast food and I can tell you we didn't have to do anything to get people in the door, fuck, not even bad weather could keep them away in fact it brought more people IN. It seems like a massive unnecessary expense on three N64s, 6 controllers, the CRTs, and the kiosk's building materials.

They existed even before the N64. I remember when I was a kid, my local play place had a bunch of Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis set up (most of which never worked). The only game I remember was Genesis Jurassic Park.

i might be wrong here, but i seem to recall the free version of runescape to only allow you to use the in-browser java version, and didn't let you set the game fullscreen, so a common workaround was to set windows to 640x480 so it more or less filled the screen

I think he's trying to say that video game addiction is about to be looked at in a far more seriously light, according to him, over the next 13 years.

Millennial's were the first generation to get hit hard with video games being playable at home.
Generation Z was born into the environment of being able to play games at home.
Early Gen. Z are starting to fall into the same category as the average Millennial.

They're not leaving home and continue to live with mommy and daddy.
They're not getting jobs.
They're not graduating college.
They're just playing video games, eating fast food and jacking off to unlimited internet porn.

They have been thoroughly subjugated by technology.
If you told them video games are your enemy, they would not believe it.
I wouldn't be surprised if video games and pornography get hit the hardest in terms of societal well being soon.

We'll just start seeing video games that have more "social conscience" and I don't mean social justice, I mean actually being aware of the effect they have on people's behaviors and actively attempting to improve the societal contributions of their players. Pokémon Go was kind of a shot in the dark precursor to it.

It's generally considered undesirable for online games to bring local people together but it shouldn't be. Communities should be strengthening through playing video games together and it should be easier for those people to also work together, be it online or offline.
