R-TYPE is unquestionably the greatest shoot 'em up ever created.

They're ok, but Psikyo took the R-Type formula and made it way more enjoyable and exciting.

Are there any shmups where the bullet patterns are completely random?

If you can't see the parallels in the game design of Psikyo and R-Type, you need to play them more.
Even S. Nakamura, Psikyo's founder, credits R-Type as his biggest inspiration.

>heavy memo-based survival
>extremely reliant on abusing safespots and learning an incredibly static route
>short stages, a loop takes less than 20 mins
>2 loops with the 2nd loop being much harder and different
>charge attacks by holding down the shot button
>a bullet-cancelling pod/shield mechanic
>giant hitboxes, though this isn't really exclusive to R-Type but non-danmaku in general
>limited resources in comparison to other STGs at the time

All staples of R-Type which Psikyo games also share.

The 3D ps1 game is pretty good, the rest are sort of boring knock offs of gradius.

dat first level song on the SNES version tho

I wouldn't call them Gradius knock offs because the style is so unique to Irem (though a billion shmup devs ripped off R-Type with varying degrees of success). Gradius encourages much more movement around the screen whereas R-Type's levels almost feel like a puzzle game at points (ie "find the solution").

I've never really gotten into the arcade games because I feel they're a little cheap but I really dig Delta and -at moments- Final. The R-Type formula was definitely beautifully represented in their spinoffs Image Fight and X-Multiply though. I enjoy them more than I do R-Type 1 and 2.

Maybe not the best, but great and I feel its kind of underappreciated. Pretty much everyone answers yes if you ask them if they like R-Type, but almost no one ever answers "R-Type" when you ask for their favorite horizontal shmup.
