I need help finding a PC RPG game released sometime between 1992-2002, and which I likely saw between 1997-2001; though that's mainly a guess for its level of quality and how old I was.

All I can remember is that it was first-person, and you would move around a castle of some sort to try and uncover a mystery or something. You could go inside the castle and outside in a courtyard. The game was mainly grey, with a kind of white foggy look, and it had green grass in the courtyard and a fountain. There was a dungeon area with cells, and inside one of the cells there was a skeleton either as an enemy or a prop. There was also a green frog puzzle or something too. I've drawn a picture of how it looks in my memories, and attached it to my post.

I don't recall it having a lot of action sequences, kind of like it was a puzzle game; rather than a fantasy RPG, and that it was hard to figure out what to do. My father and aunt, who showed it to me at the time, believe it was Stonekeep from 1995, but that game doesn't look anything like I remember.

Anyone have any ideas?

Do you remember what "kind" of PC you played it on? Did it look fairly common for the time period? Sometimes people hold on to old shit, and since PCs were advancing much quicker back then it's a lot easier to narrow down the system.

It feels like it would have looked really good at the time. Like as good as Gothic or Morrowind, but it was simpler; due to the heavy use of just light grey bricks and that kind of "white" draw distance effect of fog.

They played it on one of those common white towers I always saw from 1995-2000, before Macs were much of a thing. Sort of reminded me of an IBM, but was bigger and had windows. Picture related sort of looks like it. The game was also kind of spooky as a kid, and I think they told me I was too young to play it.

Shadowgate?

It wasn't point and click, you could move sort of in a 3D first-person space; and it wasn't on a grid I don't believe. So if you moved the cursor, your vision would move IIRC. Mainly I remember the draw distance fog, it kind of looked like Minecraft with really low draw distance; but you were in a castle--so everything looked misty.

Doesn't seem to fit what I recall, it may be that the game came out considerably after 1995, as Stonekeep looks "too old" to me, considering the perspective of the camera while controlling the game. It MIGHT be that you moved kind of like in Stonekeep, but the angle I felt like you viewed stuff at wasn't straight-on, that you could move anywhere; and not just on a grid. The "outside" part with the green grass is really important. As though you were still trapped in the castle, but you could go outside and walk around the yard.

It sort of felt like Amnesia, but it had a "light" visual design. It wasn't a dark game like Frankenstein.

Closer still. Imagine if in this image, the sky was "white;" the ground green, and the walls didn't have the moss; but you could look at it from this sort of angle.

I don't know if the game had any sort of UI. I feel like it didn't, and it played kind of like Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

This sounds vaguely like Strife: Quest for the Sigil, although that game doesn't really have puzzles.

It would explain that though

Strife looks a lot like it; but it wasn't a shooting game. I think you moved around kind of like you do in this one. It likely wasn't as fast for the movement; and it looked "brighter."

>>6587772
Great guesses, Elder Scrolls Battlespire looks the closest to me; but I don't think its any of those.

Don't think it was this one.

Of particular note, the game didn't seem like an action game. It may be a mistake to call it an RPG. Something about its atmosphere and gameplay made it look and play more like an exploration or mystery game. That's why I think the skeleton in the dungeon may have just been a corpse that was "part of a puzzle" or something, rather than an enemy. I feel like you may have been able to pick up and carry around items in some kind of inventory.

The colours for black and white Shadowgate sure seem familiar, but this game HAD to have been much later, and was a 3D-exploration or close to it kind of like the Windows maze, and it played very differently.

Close aesthetic; but its missing an "outdoor" section, and is likely too old for what I remember. I do really recall this courtyard with green grass, and a fountain; and a frog or something you could find. You could go from there to a dungeon, but the skeleton would always scare me. The dungeon was like a hallway down some stairs, and it had maybe 3 cells all on the "left" side from its entrance when you're looking in, I think.

I can't really find what I'm thinking of, but it sort of looks like Realms of Arkania 3 and ShadowCaster visually, due to the fog. I also think it may have had a spooky name; though "Stonekeep" fits that, it doesn't look even close to what I remember.

>> No.6588174

>>6588162
Well I haven't played Stonekeep myself, but I'm sure some other anon could tell us whether it had a skeleton in a cell and/or 'green frog puzzle' to help rule it out. Or a fountain, since you included one in your drawing.

>> No.6588176

>>6588174
It does have the skeleton, so obviously it'll come up if you search; but it just isn't visually similar, and doesn't appear to have any outdoor segments.

In context, my family was hugely into Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and 3, and it may have been that 3 was already out. Not sure if it was newer than 1999 though, sadly. Thought it might be one of the Might and Magic games; but I also don't believe this game involved a "party" dungeon crawl, it was just one individual in a castle.

This one and Realms of Arkania 3 are the closest visually. I'm looking through huge lists of adventure games and horror games right now to try and see as well.

I'm fairly certain it's an adventure game like Amnesia or Myst, rather than an RPG.

Checked it out, but not the one.

I remember as a kid it had an ominous icon on the desktop, and we "weren't" allowed to play it or something. I feel like it may have had a lot of reading or something in it as well, but the supposed objective was to maybe escape the castle or "climb" it.

Looking more, it looks EXTREMELY like this: >>6588162 but I know it isn't that particular game. But the whole game, when you're outside the castle, looks a lot like the picture in the graphic quality. Pretty sure it was Windows. It MUST be something other than Stonekeep.
