Are there ACTUALLY any Stars in this game that are too hard to figure out organically for a child?

Yes, the red switch house is one of the most elusive areas of the game. Missing that will cost you more than a dozen stars.

This is the one that requires aiming the camera into the light in the foyer of the castle, right? Literally the only reason I ever knew that was because my cousins knew, and they had official guides.

>> No.6582273

>>6582214

Well I beat it 120 stars without a guide and without the internet, so i don't think so. The "mission" names give you a pretty good clue for every star and as a kid you explore the castle and surroundings until you have seen every pixel the game has to offer.

However, even then it was pretty much impossible to completely escape outside tips for the game. Naturally I loved gaming magazines and those always had a tips and tricks section obviously. Even the free Club Nintendo, as Nintendo Power was called here, had one I explicitely remember reading about how to get to the red switch secret room before getting to that point.
Still, I am sure that even without it with the light suddenly shining in there I would have looked up by myself.

Just by dicking around you are going to find at least one of them, if you're familiar with how secrets have worked in other levels then you know there will be five of them, then it's just a matter of looking around and trying things.
>Pyramid puzzle
You already know it's inside the Pyramid so you go in there. Then if you find a secret then you know there's another 4 to find.
>Snowmans lost his head
I will freely admit this one isn't very well done and it can be difficult to figure out where you're supposed to be to make it go to the right place. But even at worst players will know how to accomplish the Star, they just may not know what exactly to do to make that happen. So at worst it's just trial and error until you figure out where you're supposed to be.

You might be right about the red switch. I had it spoiled for me before I ever had the chance to discover it for myself so I can't really speak from experience about discovering or missing it. It seems obnoxious to gate so many stars behind what seems a fairly obtuse mechanic though.

I agree with your summaries for those four stars. As an adult I got filtered by the Snowman one, but the others were fine.
I ended up googling how to deliver the body to the head. Turns out I'd been very close, but slightly off. I lack the patience to allocate so much time to a puzzle like that. All I can think is that I'd be better off using that time for something productive, and that kills the fun for me. I'm a casual, so when the amount of effort I have to put in outweighs the amount of satisfaction I'm likely to achieve from solving a difficult puzzle I typically move on.

I remember back in 2004 as a teenager I went to my friend's house and we decided to hook his old dusty N64 to the TV after years inside a box and play some Mario 64. He had his old saves intact and the best slot had exactly 119 stars he had collected as a kid. He didn't even knew there were 120 stars in total and there was a prize for collecting all stars (not native english speaker, bought the cart used without box or manual). We spent a while trying to find out what star was missing.

Turns out it was the 2nd princess slide star (Beat it under 21s if I recall). He had got the first star and moved on without going back to the slide

So yes, kids can eventually figure out all stars, even without understanding english or reading the instruction manual. Of course being poor is an advantage because when you have only one new game to play for an entire year and a entire collection of only four or five you will get every last drop of fun you can. Also there were no smartphones or streaming back then.

A couple of the more arduous ones on Shifting Sand Land (more to do with difficulty than ingenuity tho)
Same goes for Tick Tock Clock

Its possible some kids wouldnt be able to figure out the Wet/Dry World jump in picture frame water level thing
The hidden door (by wall jumping) in hazy maze cave
Peach Slide Re-Match (First time thru did it once and didnt realize there was a 2nd star by doing it in under 21 seconds or w/e it is)
>what I mean it its unclear you have to do it twice for 2 stars

As for the look into the sun thing, that was easy for me. Because once you get (30?) stars the light becomes really obvious instead of just subtle. It seems obvious to look into it, to my mind. But then I got stuck on Blast Away The Wall for years, so huh

This is a reasonable one, and I feel most kids did the same thing. It takes a certain level of vidya savvy to think "Oh, well the level keeps track of your time, so of course something will happen if I get a low enough time." If I can just vent for a moment, the "Top o' the Town" Star in Super Mario 64 is easily one of the biggest misnomers in all of gaming history and perhaps the greatest blunder ever. Every other Star's name concisely summarizes approximately where Mario can find the Star with only minimal detective work at the most. However, as you may know, Wet-Dry World has two separate areas: the uptown, where Mario enters the course, and the downtown. The two areas are distinctly divided by a tall fence that you must shoot Mario into using the cannon. There are three Stars in the course that reference a town: "Go to Town for Red Coins," "Quick Race Through Downtown," and "Top o' the Town." At no point is this "uptown" area referred to as such and there are no structures that even remotely resemble buildings within it, whereas the downtown area is clearly a town and referred to by name in one Star. Nevertheless, the "Top o' the Town" Star requires that the player go to the very top of uptown and break one of those nondescript yellow boxes that usually hold only coins. This blatant oversight will inevitably confuse the player, leading to hours of fruitless searching in the wrong section of the course and, while I would love nothing more than to give this otherwise fantastic game a 10/10, I unfortunately must detract points for this error. 9.9/10, wouldn't recommend if you don't have the time necessary to solve this mystery.

"Welcome to Princess Toadstool's secret slide!
There's a Star hidden here that Bowser couldn't find.
When you slide, press forward to speed up, pull back to slow down.
If you slide really fast, you'll win the Star!"
The game tells you that if you get a good enough time then you will be given a Star. The player's inability to read is not a flaw with the game.

You may have to actually use your brain to get this Star, read the signs given, and figure it out yourself. It's also 100% optional to solve this puzzle. Why do you even want games to just hand the solution to all players so nobody has to think to complete any given task? Huh, you guys can't read signs, and now you can't read posts either?
No but all joking aside I'm just trying to say that the designers trusted players to think, to try things, to experiment, and to solve puzzles. I don't consider this a game flaw unless they fail to properly give players enough clues to be able to solve the puzzle. In this case I don't think they failed to convey to the player what they need to do to get this Star.
>>6585192
>Again, unless the game gave you a specific time to beat,
Doesn't the fact that it times you at all provide you with enough information right off the bat to be able to figure out that getting a fast enough time will get you the Star?
>you're completely justified in thinking that your time was fast enough to claim "the" star that it told you about.
I agree they could have been more clear about it being a second Star but it just stands to reason to me that kids who think it through will be able to realize they didn't get the Star mentioned in the last line, for the reasons I've stated before (there being a time clock at all, the first Star just being there all the time no matter what your time is, the clue on the sign).

My point is that you have no reason to believe that that isn't the star for getting a good time. Maybe, MAYBE if you went out of your way to fuck around and not go fast you could've scratched your head. But for the vast majority of players, they have no reason to expect otherwise. You quoted the game itself—it explicitly says "a star" and "the star". It doesn't get any clearer than this in the English language.

I never really said it was easy. I've actually said the designers felt confident putting in Stars that serve as puzzles because almost every Star in optional, implying I already know it isn't the easiest Star in the world.
>>You may have to actually use your brain to get this Star

> the first Star just being there all the time no matter what your time is
This presupposes two things. That a second star exists, and that the time you got wasn't sufficient. Why would anyone, regardless of age, think that? Again, unless you went out of your way to fuck around and waste time, you have no reason to believe that you didn't just get the necessary time. You had no idea that a second star even existed, because this is your first time playing the game, and the game went out of its way to tell you that it's "a star" and "the star". It's easy to say this sort of shit with after-the-fact knowledge, but the very fact that your first post was what the sign said, and you just admitted that the sign was misleading, proves that your argument was shit to begin with. You retards are really autistic, lmao.

Well I think a lot of anons ITT are neglecting to mention they were told about the star or they read about it. Why lie about it? I don’t really know, maybe they think they’ll get some esteem from strange autists out of it. It’s /vr/ though, what should I expect?

Kind of.
Since some stars really depend on the "riddle" at the star selection screen, some translations are really not helpful.
Growing up playing the french version, some were really counter-productive.
Blast Away The Wall is roughly "fire at the bricks".
Tall Tall Mountain's Mysterious Mountainside in particular is hard to figure out because not only is the place in an area you do not often go to, but the name translates to "weird wall" which is the opposite of helpful.

I could only find like three stars. I quit and gave up. I have no idea where to go in this game.
