Haven't gotten around to playing Succ yet because it glitches as soon as I start a scenario but this is a pretty good lineup. Reusing H3 monsters that weren't in H2 was a smart idea, makes it feel authentic.

My only nitpick is the top tier. Genies are supposed to be part of the common "townfolk" of Bracada similar to Ogres in Krewlod or Dwarves/Elves in AvLee, thus making them rare all-powerful beings feels inconsistent with the established lore.

After making this post I tried starting Succ again and suddenly it worked. Only glitch I ran into was a missing model file in one battle (it was a stack of 12 but after attacking them once I insta-won the battle). From what I can tell the mod is fairly solid, I'm impressed. Witch is more or less just Fortress (Wasps have the Dragonfly effect) but Dervish is fun to play and harmonizes with the other factions as well as the overall aesthetic of the game.

The mod also reminds me that Heroes 3's biggest strengths are its fast pace and accessible interface. Them combined with Heroes 2's art style is really cool.

Considering the town was quickly mashed up after 3DO realized that they failed with the Forge, it turned up pretty good both aesthetically and lore-wise. An arcane conflux conjured by the elemental lords to answer the threat of destruction of Enroth, a town of magic through and through.

now that you mentioned it, homm3 lineups are far from perfect and I wouldn't be all that against mixing up the creatures around some, for better rosters/balance. H3SW roster in pic related is probably the best lineup in any heroes game ever imo. And the reason why the creatures are "simple" is quite a logical one and it was given by the devs, let me repeat it here:

I don't want to see any kind of Lamassu or Naga or other concepts from modern games where the designers had to think their brains out for a newer image so they had to dig deep in not-so-well-known mythologies of the East. Heroes 2 is a Western game, and all creatures portrayed there are Western in origin, and even the Genies/Nomads are so generic because that's how they look in the eyes of Western people. Disney's Aladdin included.
So as you can see, comfiness >>>>> everything else; what more can you ask for? In case of Dervish, creatures were obviously drawn from desert/Arabian Nights/Egyptian themes and if the Dervish town ever comes into HotA, it won't be all that hard to think of a few matching substitutes, since it allows for a bit more "complex" inventions. Giant Scorpions and Scorpion riders, Ugallu, Horse Archers, Serpopards, Giant Snakes, lion creatures or cat-folk, Sphinx, Lamassu, Mushussu - plenty of options to explore and test out. And it would work since it is a "meta theme" taken from the context of desert cultures. Crapyard on the other hand doesn't work, not only because it's lineup is all over the place and has some very retarded entries, but because it is aping a very niche theme - Alice from the Wonderland - and you can't throw something like that in homm and expect it to fit. It isn't the problem that the town is not "original" or that the author wanted a renaissance mage-knight town with muskets, it's a problem because it has Jabberwocks and dodos in it. Might've went for card soldiers, mad hatters and walruses while at it and complete the memes. Nomad faction on the other hand exists in homm lore - from the Bracada desert the first mages came and established Tower - and this can be expanded upon in the game so it fits well and isn't disruptive. There are hints about it in HotA as well, Cove hero Manfred being the prime example.

yeah, it's awesome, I'm honestly taking a liking to it more than to SoD/HotA; it is a simple, refined, ultracomfy, heroes experience, I just hope they will implement all the benefits of HD mod when they arrive to v.1.0 release. Bear in mind that the Witch faction is mostly placeholder for now - you can see that the buildings are a literal Fortress copy paste - since one of the hardest things H3Succ devs stumbled upon is producing homm2 artwork that fits with the existing art. Try going for higher level creatures. Use hero chains to clean your area faster, to get the ressources you need to get higher level creatures.

Agreed, quite a different feel from the Castle in homm3 and a better one at that. An additional shooter was a good decision, a compensation for a total lack of fliers - makes for a harder game when besieging towns - but damn it feels great once you break through those fortifications and storm the keep. I like how all units in H3SW are quit a bit more chunkier and that Leadership, Luck and Ballistics are far more relevant skills; most of the time they are an easy, certain pick over anything else.

hmmmmmm homm has "Ground Level" which is terrain + water. And we have an Underground level...but how would an Underwater level work in a TBS game like heroes? I remember AoW SM having a "third map layer" for the Shadow dimension (Ground+Underground+Shadow), so this might not be all that impossible. Essentially any point on the sea map would work as a "gateway" to the underwater layer since it would all be connected. Rampart is a worse town than Sorcerers, simply because it was skewed more into a blander nature-only theme, away from the original sorcery-druids idea which was way more awesome. The town is also more balanced in homm2 than in homm3 imo with a more interesting roster, some of which was reused for Conflux (thankfully).

The creatures that I mentioned as possible alters for a homm3 Oasis/Dervish faction were all drawn from either Egyptian/Mesopotamian/Persian/Arabian mythological stock - which all tie into the desert/1001 nights theme this town is going for. And I never complained that heroes shouldn't have a Wizard/Warlock faction - it has each of those already - or a funky mage-knight faction with odd summons and muskets. I said that drawing inspiration from "Alice in the Wonderland" is too disruptive for a game that bases it's factions on more general, overarching themes, not transplanting things outright from other fantasy works. As if you had Uruk-hai instead of Orcs, Khorne demons instead of Horned demons and Landsknecht instead of Swordsman - it is too specific. Homm is not fantasy "Capcom vs Marvel'" and it would ruin it if it was.

Why do you think Arabian Nights/Middle-East mythology is "creatively bankrupt", it's one of the most well-established themes there is, almost archetypical. It's like saying "medieval knights" are creatively bankrupt. Some things are just cool every time they are used. Hm, I've run into this problem myself. One attempt was adding 2 CPU-only Inferno players in addition to the 4 Human players. Their starter zones were small in sandwiched in between the Human players, so they're more of a nuisance than a real threat, and if you play Inferno you end up with more towns of your own type. But that could have tipped the scale too much.

Right now I try to put a few Inferno dwellings in non-starter zones, e.g. an Archipelago type map and one of the islands has an Efreet dwelling.

Another option is Seer's Huts. HotA recently added a "Be a specific class" quest type so you could make Seers that only give something to Heretic or Demoniacs, or to anyone who isn't necro.

As far as Necropolis goes giving them a small or strategically poor starting position is probably a good idea. Maybe put less (or no) external dwellings to counter necro farming.

the issue with necros is mainly with skelingtons; necromancy overtime will net you a ridiculous amount of troops and this was somewhat managed in HotA by halving the % of skellies you get back with the skill, from 10/20/30 to 5/10/15 - but it is still a big payoff, especially with heroes who specialize in the skill. The second big threat are Vampire Lords. I honestly am not sure how could you manage this without crippling their starting zones and making them poor - which is kinda unfair. The best way may be that you provide other biomes with a higher amount of adventure map locations where you can boost attack and defense primary skills, that should even things out, but don't do it too much.

For Inferno, the easiest way to balance them out is by giving them a bigger pop growth than the rest - place a few external dwellings in their immediate territory from where they can recruit their creatures - but not too much. Larger pop will allow them to scale better with the more quality units the other castles have, you will just need to be careful not to "spoil" them too much.

You could even be a "bigger no-fun bastard" and cap the level lower, on 15 or even ten (or even disable leveling up completely by setting the cap to one) and make the game a tactical dance around strategically placed Witch Hut's, Universities and Hermit Shack's. In WHs you can choose which skill a visiting hero will receive and the Hermit will improve it to either Advanced or Expert. University is random though and brings an element of suprise - as would an odd scholar or a quest reward. Primary skill booster locations on adventure map would become equally important as well, the lower you fix the cap. Might make for an interesting game and a whole different and more strategic heroes experience, players "guarding" WH locations to deny a certain skill to others or wait in ambush for unsuspecting hero thirsty for knowledge to come by.

I like leveling characters up and maxing them out same as anybody, I just dont want heroes roaming around with mega armies and 50/40/30/30 stats. In my experience, especially with larger maps, there comes a point where you've won, its just a matter of doing the busywork of actually finishing the map; I hate that. I've never seen a map where each team has like 8 leveled heroes all roaming around active at the same time. I don't know if the AI will know to do it, however.

I'm also worried about the AI killing itself too early since you wont be starting with a town, but I have yet to test it because the map isnt that far along yet.

I recently started to play HoMM 3 again and I have two questions:

1) When spells selection is being decided for mages guild? I want comfortable but long games yet I already ran into few cases when neither starting nor nearby town have Town Portal. Currently started "Meeting at something" large map as Tower and of course, no Town Portal.
2) How to deal with AI hate for upgraded Gremlins? I literally cant keep them over 100 since each encounter with AI heroes ends with most powerful spells being cast on them and all enemy army focusing on them and them alone...

God the campaigns are such a chore to play but I like them anyway because I like having a story attached to my games. Also later SoD campaigns have tons of spelling and grammar errors and it's distracting.
I have to use a guide to get through most of the AB and SoD campaigns, because of the pure cancer in them. If you haven't won by week 2 enjoy fighting a level 24 Thant that spams the worst damage spells possible on your shitty centaurs while your Unicorns and Dragons get dabbed on by 32 Dread Knights. Then you get to play as the actually good character (Sandro) and you wish you had infinite movement and turn on quick combat because once you get 30 liches on day 2 nothing is stopping the awfully slow pain train.

huh, since there are seven tiers, they could've based each tier around one of the seven deadly sins, that would be cool. Also, Heroes 5 had a great mechanic for Inferno inspired towns in form of the unique "Gating" mechanic, I loved that. Demons in homm3 are also literal aliens from another dimension, so that could've been expanded upon to give them a more unique aesthetic. Oftentimes I think that heroes 3 could've been weird in the way Endless Legend is weird but at the same time not bland and boring like EL is, if only the devs could've let go a bit of the generic fantasy feel and allowed the theme to steer in a different direction.

They were kind of constrained by the concept. It's demons so they gotta be from hell and hell is red so let's just have a bunch of demons. NWC Might and Magic games were never about breaking new ground with creature designs and I think it's a strength of the series rather than a weakness, so it's hard to create a varied lineup when your biome is literally just hell. Something like lovecraftian/ayylmao demons would probably just look a too awkward in a simplistic Heroes fantasy (for example demons in Heroes 6 just kind of end up looking like a bunch of nondescript red blobs in the end, tried to flex the fantasy and ended more unrecognizable and glib, how ironic). At this point even concepts like "oh they've got a demon hive, just like insects" feel pretty tired and simultaneously too out there for M&M. Honestly as far as factions go Inferno is probably just as hard to write into the game aesthetics as Forge.
