Same reason it was big with europeans, chinese, latin americans, japanese...

Well also Brasil didn't have a lot of anime on tv at the time, so it had the novelty going on. First shonen of the kind here.

>couldn't some enterprising pirates (crudely) translate the Saint Seiya famicoms to hue and allow the NES dominate hueland?
No need for it to be "crudely" translated, we have tons of fansubs. But by the time Saint Seiya got here ('94), NES was already losing popularity to 16 bit platforms.
Famiclone carts at this point can only be found at the flea market, if that much, and they come straight from China, so hardly any translated games.

you said it yourself here >>6579185, no one gave two fucks about SS in japan during the 90s cause it ended in the late 80s and dint even adapted its final arc until the 2000s during the short popularity revival it had mainly in Latin America and to hype up (its failed) debut in north america, Dragonball and Sailormoon on the other hand still were popular in the 90s, mostly cause Dragonball was still going trough the cell and buu arcs, and Sailormoon was contemporary to the 90s, it own that decade, both in Japan and in latin america in the late 90s, while Dragonball was just starting in LA in the mid 90s (after a failed attempt by another dub company) and only hit it stride with the release of DBZ in 97 in LA and by 98 its popularity there went full fucking force, while Sailormoon was kinda losing its own there, but by the time they came up, nobody cared about the 16-bit consoles at the time, it was all about either PSX or N64!, and at the very least dragonball still had a few games on there, but all mediocre, yet sailormoon only got one (terrible) game, it was just too late, remember that at one point Bandai wanted to localize for Latin America both Super Butoden 2 and the first Sailormoon game, and went as far as producing a build of SB2 just called DragonBall that was based on one of the european version converted to NTSC with english translation, (the people at Club Nintendo had this build, and Gus rodriguez might known something about it, but he passed away earlier this year sadly).

At the very least, thanks to the emergance of the emulation scene we discover the titles from the 8bit and 16bit era from both franchises and others.

I find it funny that they finally dubbed the series and broadcast it in 2003, 23 years later. It has to hold a record for "latest localization of an anime series". As a Chad third worlder I recognized the characters from the bootleg famicom games and thought it was quite surreal.

It's not so weird. There's been 2 games for PS2, 1 for PS3, 1 for PS4, and a few mobile games.
There are currently 3 manga running, one of them being the official sequel to the main one. There's been shows of... varying degrees of quality over the last couple decades and a couple movies, and supposedly a live action movie in the making.

I remember around 1996 or 1997 I actually went and purchased a family game again (my old one was broken or given away) just to play the saint seiya game (I wasn't aware it was the 2nd game, I could never find the first, only the sanctuary chapter one), and the DBZ RPGs (freezer and the androids one).

Wrong. I'm talking about '94. Tokusatsu had died out a bit around here, by then. Manchete would bring Sailor Moon, Samurai Troopers, Tenkuu Senki Shulato, the U.S. Manga OVAs etc a couple years later, after seeing how successful Saint Seiya was.
SBT would also follow a year or two later with Dragon Ball and Dai no Daiboken, I think Magic Knight Rayearth and Street Fighter Victory followed a bit later. Bandeirantes really started messing with anime around 2000, Record probably got on the train a bit before them with some series and at least a movie or two.

Before that, the last really successful anime I recall here was Zillion, and that was in 1990.

Nice, I knew about DBZ Gaiden (thanks to an unofficial DBZ book I had which listed most of the released DBZ games), but I could never find it, only DBZ II and III for the FC.
I was hunting down all the DBZ games I could find, had the Super Butoden games on SNES, Buyu Retsuden on Genesis, and the 3 PS1 games.
It was fun later on playing all the other ones on emulators, one of the first ever games I played on emu was Super Saiya Densetsu, which also was probably one of the very first ROMhack fan-translations.
