>The Sega "64X" almost happened. It would've been a Saturn upgrade cartridge/card for either the cartridge slot or the port at the back. The upgrade was supposed to contain a Lockheed-Martin Real3D GPU and possibly a PowerPC CPU, giving the Saturn better-than-MODEL 2-arcade capabilities, even a decent fraction of Model-3, perhaps as much as 50%. This upgrade would've been released in either 1996 or 1997. Its main competitor in terms of 3D performance would've been the unreleased 3DO M2 console and the 3DFX Voodoo1 cards for PC, but the upgraded Saturn would've surpassed both.

>BTW, it was Martin Marietta/Lockheed Martin that developed the graphics techology for SEGA's Model 2 and Model 3 arcade boards The Real3D chip that would've gone into the Saturn upgrade, either Real3D/100 or i740, was the little brother of the Real3D/Pro-1000s use in the MODEL 3 board, and more powerful than the older, pre-REAL3D Martin Marietta chipset in MODEL 2.

>The Saturn upgrade could've been followed up by an even more powerful, standalone next-gen console sometime between 1998 and 2000, based on a newer generation Lockheed Martin Real3D GPU, with greater performance than the MODEL 3 Step 2 board (Sega's best arcade hardware at the time). This console would've been in place of the hardware that became Dreamcast. If coupled with DVD and broadband, I have no doubt it would've surpassed PS2, at least in terms of hardware, and gained a similar level of developer support. Microsoft would not have had to go out on its own with the Xbox, they'd have just allied themselves even more closely with SEGA, to fight Sony.

Right after the N64, imagine trying to get your parents to buy you one of these. And if the Real3d does the graphics then you don't even need the saturn. They should have brough over more japanese games for the saturn but sega only wanted to target people who wanted to play nfl and baseball games.

"Dude, but what if an actual American company came in and just fucking took all those games from under us???"

Sega systems have an absolutely insane Japanese 2D "anime" line up of games and it infuriates me that they never made it state side. They could have cornered the anime game market western side.

I like sega and all, but they deserved to lose the consoles wars 100%

Stuff like this convinces me Sega was doomed to failure. It seems like the Sega Genesis was a fluke or lightning in a bottle. Sega had deep understanding of the arcade scene, but not the home video game console market.

When I was a kid my parents couldn't afford to get me one for Christmas, and miraculously my mother won one from Taco Bell. They had a promotion running called "score 64(X) and win". My mom was really depressed at how me and my brother only asked for the one shared gift, and we couldn't afford it, she had a dream that night in which she saw my dead grandfather on the beach and he told her everything was gonna be okay. The next day she stopped at taco bell drive through for a soda after work (something she'd never done before), and peeled off the label on the cup and found out that we won. On Christmas day after me and my brother opened all our gifts, we tried to not let the dissapointment on our faces show because we knew the situation, and while we hadn't gotten what we hoped for, we didn't want it to show. My parents then had us open this one last gift. Me and my bro unwrapped a plastic taco bell cup, (the Sega 64X hadn't arrived in the mail yet) and were confused until they said "read it", we did, and we lost our minds with happiness. You always see those contests, and you think nobody ever wins, but they do. Till this day, I still can't believe it happened, and made it the most memorable Christmas of my life. God is good.

Prototypes often don't take into account ergonomics or function, just what the project requirements are. They deal with those things once they decide if it's something that's viable for release.

How would this even save them money? if it's literally just a cpu/gpu add on, is it using the memory from the saturn itself? because that's like, what, 3mb? that's not nearly enough for its spec, so then is it another memory bank? at that point, you're just booting a separate system and borrowing the psu and i/o out, how would that be cheaper than just releasing a new system?
