Just finished System Shock 2 for the first time. The first game (enhanced edition) is on sale. Should I get it?

If you want to support Night Dive then sure. I used the enhanced edition on my first playthrough and didn't come across any issues, plus unlike the original the Nightdive version has custom campaigns.

the first game is a whole lot better, but that doesn't make 2 bad either. i love both of these games but playing 1 was life changing. its a truly challenging game and you never once feel pandered to. there is a surprising lack of "safety nets" to stop you from getting totally fucked on. go play it, trust me its awesome.

Play it. It will blow your mind. When I played SS1 the first time I just kept thinking
>holy shit they did THIS in 1994?

I think it's better than SS2, just because the exploration is so much more fun. In fact that's pretty much all you do 90% of the time. There's a few goals you have to achieve, but most of the time you're just on your own exploring the rather large maps. The dreadful atmosphere and catchy music are brilliant. Combat/enemy AI kinda sucks, but at least not in a way that is infuriating, it's just easy to exploit. Overall it's one of the best games ever made.

Why is throwing grenades such a pain in the ass though. Should I just not bother using them.

its actually pretty cool in my opinion. i like that sometimes you fumble with them and they blow up in your face. it kinda just makes the game feel more immersive and less "click button to throw grenade" and more actually throwing a grenade. definitely use them just get better at using them and learn which types work best for what enemies.

You have to get used to it, but it's actually well implemented and doing it right feels very satisfying. You can even throw them backwards if you get the motion right.

I prefer SS1 to 2, and both are fantastic. Definitely worth it at sale price.

I know /vr/ is full of meme opinions but damn. This sure is a popular one for being such a joke

Not any of them but SS2 is literally unfinished especially from the rickenbacker onward.

but SS1 is cool as fuck, though. It's so sprawling, full of secrets, and abstract. I love how Shodan's security presence affects ship accessibility in a way similar to Metroid 2's remaining metroids. It's true that SS2 is a more immersive, approachable, and modern game, but it's always seemed like apples and oranges to compare them both taking place in spooky space stations filled with mutants with an evil overseeing AI. They are both classics, but so different that I can see why people would prefer one or the other.

*to compare outside of both taking place in
Pardon my old, tired, wagey brain.

The stats system in 2 wasn't balanced in the slightest and fucked the game up real bad.

>> No.6566682

absolutely, its the best shock game of the whole series

Can't speak for everyone, but I personally love SS2, however SS1 feels like a slog to me. You just wander around technicolor mazes forever.
