It is, and it's not bad. Gameplay feels and plays more like an 8-bit RPG but it has some interesting (or annoying) mechanics/elements and a decent enough story. It's also pretty short and really easy, so not a bad waste of time if you like JRPGs and Slayers.

look it probably isn't that, seriously. if you are typing legible sentences to us in english which you're saying isn't your native language, and you aren't elderly/sick and planning on dying anytime soon, you probably have more of a head-start than you think. it's just a long term goal, and it would need the days/hours and patience for the pay-off. lots of people have a passing interest in wanting to do something, but that isn't necessarily enough of a drive for them to alter their life for the foreseeable future to achieve that. i, like many others on here, have been consuming japanese media since i was a kid, so the decision to pour in the time to learn the language (6+ years now) didn't seem risky at all; at any rate, i knew i'd be wanting to consume japanese media 10+ years in the future anyway.

well all the famicom games will be kana only, so in that respect any game on the platform that has a good volume of text will be a good study tool (adventure/rpg/strategy games). if you are interested in going to the roots like FF1, then Dragon Quest is another good choice, or there's one i played recently that i liked called Sweet Home (good movie, too). by super famicom you got the arrival of kana+kanij scripts, and my knowledge here is limited, i know that Mother 2 at least was kept in kana only.

generally speaking any game that uses a lot of the language and captures your attention is a good learning tool. don't be daunted by kanji. for one thing you're going to be dealing with a commercial item that was made primarily for japanese children and teenagers, therefore rare words and uncommon kanji are much less frequent than say reading the news, opinion pieces, or literature (iirc japanese children through their national language curriculum have have covered around a little over 1,000 by the end of 6th grade, those being by far the most common kanji that would appear). i've certainly heard of people wanting to or playing things like pokemon and famicom games at first to experience japanese gaming in a kanji void, but i and many other learners i've known over the years have just jumped in to whatever they like, and everyone i've known that stuck with it got good at the language.

biggest thing is keeping varied exposure to the language constant. also make flash cards too. if you need help/advice with that and don't know where to look, just ask.

Thanks for the serious reply. I wonder if I then should tackle Ocarina of Time in Japanese, then. I love that game to bits, and I wouldn't mind using it since I already know how the game rolls, just not how it's japanese-language version of the plot rolls.
As for flashcards, yes, I'm going to need some explanation since my mind went directly on R4 territory.

i think playing through the jp version of something you've already played is a good idea, since you're going in with a foundation of understanding, plus it will build general confidence in just consuming something in japanese in the first place. coincidentally somebody uploaded decent raw rips of gamecenter's ocarina of time episodes on nyaa a few weeks ago and i watched them (https://nyaa.si/view/1255222, give them a watch for some good listening practice too).

if you aren't familiar with this, there are dedicated japanese learning threads on both /jp/ and /int/. the cultures and individuals that post there differ, but they're both good info and q&a hubs (i myself haven't used these since 2017 but they were a great deal of help for me). this is the /int/ one >>>/int/126100907. they both use this guide https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/.. i mentioned "flashcards" earlier; if you are brand new to learning japanese then i recommend just reading over the site from the beginning, but the "anki guide" section will go through how to use the "Anki" flashcard program, and how you will eventually be able to make your own flash cards made from the content you encounter in the media you are consuming. i know this sounds heavy, but once you set it up, it becomes second nature.

a group from those japanese learning threads made its own discord years back, https://discord.gg/eMykHy.. most of the regulars on there at this point are high levels, so you can use that for correspondence, too. hope all this helps.

yeah there are occasionally bad personalities (sometimes mental illness, and that's not hyperbole). generally speaking, unlike the usual language learning incentive being communication with other people or work/living circumstances, a lot of people with japanese pick it up, at least at first, purely to consume otaku media. therefore more introverted/autistic types, therefore higher chances of personalities that don't gel well with others. but at the end of the day you are learning for you, not for them. focus on the helpful and productive ones, ignore the pricks.

as for anki, it's only a flashcard tool, not an absolute to learning the language. if you take all the time i spend with the japanese language in a day, making/doing anki flashcards is 5 percent or less (this has fluctuated over the years, but how long you spend in it is entirely up to the user). consuming media/experiencing the language comes first. but it's gotta be consistent, and i think that, especially for a lot of newbies, something like daily flashcards helps establishing routine. i think anki is simple and versatile enough that it could probably work for you. but like i said it's just another tool for learning, so i wouldn't go out of my way to sell it.
