I'm 33 years old but I have never played Doom, not even the modern current-gen games. Does it still hold up or is it a byproduct of its time?

>> No.6555040

It's not as good as Quake unless you play Doom 64. The atmosphere isn't right, Duke Nukem nailed the atmosphere just right as far as laid back shooting went.

Doom has always been a technical marvel but void of creativity/atmosphere.

Are any of the 16-bit console ports worth playing or is the original DOS version the only real way to go? I'm not interested in any remakes, mind, I just want to play the core original game.

DOS version is the way to go. Most console ports compromise on things. Some have exclusive levels, but there are PC mods that add most of them. I would suggest using a source port. Either Chocolate doom for a very vanilla experience, or GZDoom for something that looks prettier. Both run on Linux and Windows, and the game actually looks really good with higher resolutions.

Get this pack, has Quake + 2 expansion packs, Doom 1, 2, 64 (mapset), Sigil and No rest for the living. Also other mandatory DOS games such as Heretic, Hexen, Duke 3D, Wolfenstein etc. All in a ready-to-go package using DosBox.

They do hold up except you'll most definitely want to play them with mouse aiming and wasd movement, which wasn't really so popular or even common when the game was new.
The default would be keyboard only at the time.
So yeah, it's fun as shit but it's hard to get the real context of things when you change the input method.
Think of playing Goldeneye 007 or Perfect Dark with a keyboard and mouse. For me the result would be a totally different experience from the original.

Its so fun and there is 25 yrs of maps, megawads, mods etc and a couple active multiplayer source ports to play on like zdaemon and zandronum. Im literally mapping right now. Check out "doomkid"s videos on YouTube to get started they are pretty concise.

If you just want the vanilla experience, get Chocolate Doom. Mind that you may want to apply a hack/trick to turn off Mouse Movement, because it's slightly annoying. Optionally you can use Crispy Doom, which lets you fix that, and apply a few basic but minor quality of life improvements.

Doom is best played with a mouse for horizontal turning, and a keyboard or gamepad for movement. You can play the original game with keyboard only or gamepad only, it's not too hard, but a mouse is ideal, as it lets you turn with speed and precision.
If you choose to use any advanced port, mind that Doom wasn't really supposed to be played with jumping, crouching, or being able to look up or down, your view is locked horizontally, and a vertical auto-aim lets you compensate for height.

Yes, Quake is a 3D shooter that set the grounds for pretty much everything 3D FPS that the world knows today.
No, Doom is not devoid of atmosphere, much less creativity
>Made the FPS genre wildly popular, inventing mechanics no one dreamed of before
If practically defining a genre is not being creative, I don't know what is
>Devoid of atmosphere
It has one of the most memorable OST's known to men, inverted pentagrams, a sinister ambient where everything is demonic and hostile, killer sound effects, demons scream in agony when you shoot them.
Your character gradually starts becoming a bloody mess the more damage you take. He grins maliciously when you find a bigger gun.
You can hear enemies grunting in the next room waiting to eviscerate you. You get stuck in dark, narrow corridors being jumpscared every 2ft from monsters that come out of nowhere.
It's still one of the most based, devilish atmospheres the gaming industry has ever produced, to this day.
Kids that played it literally got nightmares from the game's horror.
You don't see inverted pentagrams on the walls much these days.

>> No.6556530

>>6556518
>The default would be keyboard only at the time.
That was really only because a lot of people didn't have enough RAM to run Doom and mouse drivers at the same time, the game was developed with mouse turning in mind, and if you look at the attract mode demos, they are visibly recorded using a mouse.

>>6555663
>>6556521
The shelf life is outstanding. It cost $40 to order the original registered version in 1993/1994, and the value has been great.

>> No.6556536

>>6556530
Some people played with the mouse as the character's movement, too.
But the mechanics in Doom aren't based on mouselook, because the height of your shot had zero importance, if your aim was horizontally aligned with the enemy you'd hit it no matter what height.
First FPS where the shot height actually existed and mattered was Quake.

>> No.6556553

>>6556536
>because the height of your shot had zero importance, if your aim was horizontally aligned with the enemy you'd hit it no matter what height
That's not strictly true, there are situations where it can miss anyway, and there is actually a range limit for the vertical auto aim.

>> No.6557678

Doom is literally just 3d Gauntlet, especially when you're playing 4 player coop

>> No.6557706

Doom has extremely solid mechanics, good gameplay, good balance between enemies and weapons. It is not surprising that almost 20 years later, it is still possible to find new maps that use only the vanilla elements of the game and are still stupidly fun.
The original maps are outdated, but for beginners they serve as an introduction to gameplay. And some are are still fun today.

>I'm 33 years old but I have never played Doom
Faggot. The first PC game I ever really played was Doom II. It was in 94/95 and I was like 10 and my friends completely rednecks boomer dad, dude was a construction foreman, showed me how to run it with the command prompt and play it. "This is how you get to Doom II: He'll on Earth" (in as hillybilly an accent as you can imagine, he always called it by the full title) "Ya gotta shoot these demons now, here's how you move" Was bizarre having this type of guy show me what seemed like futuristic technology, I only has an NES and Genesis and didn't really play them in our schools at the time, just old Apple-IIs. And the game was so cool and brutal and evil it was just the most bad ass thing I ever played.

A few months later my friend said his uncle who was into computers put a bunch of levels and other funny stuff in their Doom and Doom II he downloaded off IRC. I didn't even know what the fuck IRC was at the time, I still hadn't really been online. So I guess that was the first time I played custom wads, only thing I remember is Doomguy saying lines from Ace Ventura when he would kill demons or get shot. Next time I went over there it had stopped doing that. I didn't understand how it did that till I got a computer and internet access in 96 and got into Doom/Doom II myself

Yeah, Texas has a very well developed software and hardware industry with a lot of history in the business.

Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, Heretic, Hexen, Rise Of The Triad, Shadow Warrior, and Duke Nukem 3D, these were all developed in Dallas, Texas, all relatively close to each other (Raven Software used to be in the same building as iD Software even).

the original version? it's fine and playable, but a source port like GZDoom might make it much more enjoyable for you. just turn off billinear filtering, for the love of god.
try out the shitload of WADs and IWADs that are available; you've got literally 25 years of user made content, and because it's been so long, it'll take forever for you to run out of truly worthwhile content.
also, OG quake aged better than OG doom, but both are equally worth playing today when factoring the source ports that are available today
