i'm being sarcastic, they use all these features we didn't use back then like anti-aliasing, global illumination, stencil shadows, ambient occlusion, etc, etc... but then don't even bother with gauraud shading or texture effects, since that might actually take some effort
basically, they try to make the model look like it's made of not many polys, while real low poly art tried to make it look like it has more than it really does (by using shading and texturing to make the model appear smoother than it is)
