You guys remember this magazine? Only the fucking diehard fans subscribed to Nintendo Power. I never got so psyched for anything in my life when I was a kid as the next issue of this magazine. I remember our schools had a contest to see who could sell the most candy bars and the winner would get a super nintendo, and second place got a sega genesis.

Guess who got the Genesis?
Guess who got a Super Nintendo a month later?

This one method is new lol. Shitposting every thread, it takes more time and effort though.
Often, 6th gen beggars would try to "outsmart" the rules and the regulars by posting threads about FIFA 2005 or whatever on the ps1.
It's funny how simple rules on a board can trigger people so much

>Was the journalism for games more reputable back then?
No, it was always enthusiast press from autistic retards who weren't fit to write for Highlights for Children, and while they weren't entirely political, they were a few that had proto-cucks writing for them (Computer Gaming World being one).. But often the mags were your best way to find out about upcoming games, and now they're good resources for finding about shit that people have forgotten about, as well as laughing at the opinions in the reviews.

>Was this across the board?
Mostly. Many of the arcade/console/handheld focused mags up to the early 90s read like PR puff pieces selling toys because of those mediums being seen as children's hobbies, while PC gaming mags were a bit more "mature" because of the age range of most computer users. By the mid 90s console mags started writing with a bit more attitude and personality that didn't come off as children's PR. Also by the mid 90s layouts started getting better and cleaner. I don't care what gen X/boomers say, shit like Die Hard Gamefan is fucking unreadable with the colors and layouts they often used.
>Like, how was the scene in Japan
I don't speak jap, so I can't say.
>Europe
Most euro mags I've sampled had the same upsides and downsides as American mags, though most British mags tended write with a typical smug brit attitude.

Again, game mags were great for news and the occasional developer interview (see: Sam Tremial's interview in Next Generation magazine) but don't let the nostalgia from other here fool you; games journalism was always a fucking farce. It's always been enthusiasts press at best, and never was legitimate journalism.

That little tantrum is SO adorable :3.

"Hah, 6th gen not retro? I'll SHOW YOU! I'll use expansion of retro game magazines to ALL retro magazines!"

Best part is tha he probably thinks that that will really bring 6th gen being allowed any closer :3

Threadly reminder that retro vidya magazines will always be considered retro here, but platforms released in 2000 or later will never be retro here (Gameboy Advance, Playstation 2, Gamecube, Xbox, etc., as well as games that don't run on 1999 or earlier computer or arcade hardware).
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I still regret throwing the first two years of Nintendo Power away because I was convinced I had to make room for a move. Still kept all the EGMs and GameFans, but both Nintendo Power and Sega Visions got culled.

I can still remember being surprised when NP reviewers would say "stick with the Playstation version" and trashed games for being uninspired copycats of a big Playstation IP. More specifically, I remember their Megaman 64 being something to the effect of their former, and some review where they ripped something apart for being a poor man's Tomb Raider.

They were still far better at it than any "unbiased" publication we've had in the past 20 years. Nintendo Power gave the original Smash a 7.7 iirc, even in official rags 10/10 its ok is a fairly recent invention.
